The Australian Ambassador, Mr. Richard Smith visited Madura on 5 May to hand over 1,000 MT of Australian rice which the Australian Government has provided to assist people displaced by the recent unrest in Central Kalimantan. The rice is being distributed by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI).
The Australian rice, with a total value of approximately A$600,000, is provided through WFP to help meet the needs of those displaced persons. Over the next four weeks, in cooperation with PMI, WFP will distribute the rice to approximately 65,000 people in Sampang, Madura Island where the largest concentration of IDPs is now sheltering. The Australian Government will complement the supply of Australian rice by providing support to public and mental health outreach programs through the International Medical Corps (IMC). This assistance is valued at A$150,000 and will support the conflict-affected population in both Madura and Central Kalimantan from May to June. The Australian Government is also considering support to schools impacted by an influx of IDPs in Madura and Kalimantan. Through the Australian Agency for International development
