Bapedal Regional Denpasar Institutional Strengthening Project (BRISP)

In its final year of operation, BRISP is working with the regional office of the Ministry of Environment, which covers the NTB, NTT and Bali regions. It is working with provincial environment management offices in the region to improve environmental management. In both NTT and NTB the provincial government has established an environmental forum with the role of advising the Governor on environmental management strategies. BRISP has supported the forums to establish a number of working groups to look at specific environmental issues and to develop strategies for the future.

As an example, in NTB, BRISP is supporting a working group that is looking at dry-land management in the eastern part of Lombok. The group has worked with a local community in the Pemongkong area to develop local programs for improving the productivity and stability of local land.

The results will be of use in other parts of the province. The group has also contributed to a province wide dry-land management strategy that has recently been endorsed by the Governor.

In NTT, one working group is helping to redefine management strategies for a conservation area in Ngada District, Flores. The group is working together with the local legislature and executive, local government offices, NGOs and community members to help to bring about a more sustainable land use system in the conservation area.

Another group in NTT is looking at improving solid waste management and reducing ground water pollution in Kupang. A similar solid waste activity is being supported in Mataram, NTB, and the group there has also been instrumental in helping villagers and tourism operators to work together to reduce the rubbish problems on the island of Gili Trawangan.

BRISP is due to finish in April 2004.
