Clean Up The World
with the staff and students of Sekolah Nusa Alam, Meninting, Lombok

KGRE visited the Nusa Alam School a few days before the Clean Up The World activity. Ina Nur is a teacher there and she is an old friend of KGRE. Do you remember her interviews a few years ago. Ina gave us some really interesting cross-cultural information.

On Friday September 19th, we did Clean up the World. We do Clean up the World to help clean our environment The Clean up the World was held in many places. We joined 40 million other people to Clean up the World. We cleaned up the village around the school. Some of the village people joined us. We picked up lots of rubbish that was left by lots of people. We were put with partners. Some children brought their mums and dads and other people to help. Other schools from Batulayar also joined in. Before we started we got together with other schools and then Pak Camat made a speech. We had bags to put the rubbish in and we used them for putting glass in too. We had to use gloves or plastic bags on our hands so they didn’t get dirty. We saw lots of sharp things like glass and other things, but the most rubbish was plastic. We got 70 kilos of rubbish. We started at 8 o’clock and the big children worked until 10 o’clock but the Juniors finished at 9 o’clock. When we got back to school my hands were smelly and we had to change out of our clothes and hats.

We do Clean up the World to help clean our environment. If we keep on cleaning up the world, and don’t throw rubbish, our world will become clean. Natural material can be composted but not plastics. We must not burn plastic because it has chemicals in it. If we burn plastic it will not make compost and dirt. If we burn plastic it will make holes in the Ozone layer. The ultra-violet rays of the sun can come in and burn our skin and cause skin cancer. The best way to keep the world clean is to put the rubbish in the bin or to reduce it, reuse it or recycle it. I enjoyed Clean up the World because it’s useful.

In our Clean up the World lessons we made a poster that said "Do not throw rubbish in public!" We learned about compost and how long things take to decompose. We learned how to make compost from natural materials and food scraps. I learned from Clean up the World to keep the world healthy by
