- Kang Guru Indonesia presents a specially designed AIBEP teacher workshop in Bogor
Kang Guru Indonesia in Bogor with AIBEP March 8 - 10
Sue and Darmika from Kang Guru Indonesia traveled to Bogor to present a special 3 day teacher workhop for teachers from AIBEP schools in the area.
It's a long way from Jakarta Airport to Bogor, especially in the rain and in the evening rush hour. The journey from the airport to the hotel took almost three hours! I was ready for a cup of tea after I checked in to the Permata hotel, opposite the Botanical Gardens in Bogor! That evening I dodged the rain showers and went for a walk down the main road to have something to eat. There were plenty of places to choose from and there were also plenty of 'factory outlet' stores too! Ayu would have loved it – shop till you drop!
After breakfast the next morning I checked the room we were to be using as the venue for the new 3 day workshop especially for AIBEP teachers. I asked the staff to move a table so that I would be able to go around all the tables and monitor the teachers. Then I went back to my room and put all the photocopies for the next three days into the correct order . At lunchtime I went back to the room and was surprised to find some teachers had already arrived. They helped me open the KGI boxes and distribute the radio program fliers. After a brief introduction to the workshop and Kang Guru the teachers were soon out of their seats and doing the first activity. The workshop ran from 1:00 until 5:00 on the first day and rather than feel tired several teachers commented after the workshop that they felt more energy than usual.

The next day the workshop ran from 8:00 until 5:00 – a long day. We had a visit from Ibu Mila from the AusAID office in Jakarta. She spoke with both the participants and Pak Yusuf – the District Coordinator for AIBEP schools and Pak Bahrul. The participants arrived on time and were soon taking part in the tasks. They received Listen and Learn with KGI SMP teacher packages and during the day we used these in some of the activities. Although it was a long day the participants were very enthusiastic – and they all arrived on time after lunch! Well done! During the afternoon we used the KGI Listen and Learn Package to practice giving clear instructions and examined the different types of activities in the books. We finished the day with a KGI quiz using the Australia Indonesia map/poster.
Thursday March 10
Darmika from the KGI technical team joined us on the final day of the workshop to video some of the activities.
After collecting their KGI packages we began the final activities of the workshop. The sessions involved some review of the previous days activities, roleplay and lots of team games including the body part sticker game and running to the board activities. Photo DARMIKA 63. At the end of the workshop the participants were asked to complete a feedback form before we held the final KGI team quiz.
The winning team were given T shirts from KGI – including the new Sabang to Merauke T shirts. Before going home at three o clock we gathered in the lobby for a group photo. Sorry did I write a - no I think there were about 30 group photos! My cheeks were aching from all the smiling we did! They were mostly very young teachers, all from MT's and all were enthusiastic during the three days. I think that was another successful KGI workshop – the first three day event with AIBEP teachers.
After video interviewing a couple of the teachers Darmika and I finished work for the day. It was still only 4pm - and it wasn't raining so we decided to go to the Botanic Gardens which were right opposite the hotel. Of course the nearest 'gate' wasn't open so we had to walk for 20 /30 minutes to find the main entrance. We passed a very noisy junction where lots of green bemos wait – all you could see was a sea of green roofs. What a busy place. Photo Sue 708. We only had about an hour to spend in the gardens but it was really beautiful. Very peaceful compared to the noisy market area outside.
Although not as big as the botanic gardens in bedugal, Bali they had some fantastic trees and plants. One of my favourites were the Brazillian lily pads. I'm always impressed by the entrepreneurship of the Javanese, and there was one such example I the gardens. In the past photographers at public attractions would use a polaroid camera for instant photos to sell to customers. But in Kebon Raya Bogor there was a photographer using a digital camera and tied onto the back of his motorbike was a printer so he could print our photos straight away! Wonderful! On the way out of the gardens I did see something which caught my eye – using the natural elements of the park a mirror was attached to a stand of bamboo for drivers to check oncoming traffic.
Friday March 11
The next morning Darmika and I left the hotel early in the morning. We were not sure about how long it would take to get to the airport as it was coming up to rush hour for traffic going to Jakarta. So better to be safe than sorry we left at 6:00am. Luckily the traffic wasn't too bad and we reached the airport about 8:45. I was able to check in straight away as I had a morning flight but Darmika wasn't leaving till lunchtime so he had to find a comfortable chair and wait! I enjoyed this workshop, with a smaller group of participants and over three days as I really felt I began to get to know some of the teachers.
