Kang GURU and the Joeys Cartoon Archives

They are young. They are lively and they love English. Kang Guru would like to introduce the Joeys English language club — Natalya, Sinta, Fatimah, Budi, Ali and Samuel. These students, all English language lovers, go to different junior high schools in their area. They are the Club Committee of this very special and very active language club. Here is some information about them for you to enjoy.

Kang Guru would like to thank Aldo for his great cartoon illustrations - they are wonderful!

Like all Indonesian students they study English at school. However, they told Kang Guru that at their English club meetings they don't just study English, they USE it. They make lots of mistakes talking and listening but this isn't a problem. In fact, that's the fun part. They know that it's impossible to learn how to speak a language without making mistakes.

Their meetings aren't always the same.

The Joeys usually meet once a week, but during the school holidays they often meet twice or even three times a week.

They always have a theme for each meeting.

Some of their topics have been music, families, school life, technology, SMS and the environment. Ali is especially interested in that. He wants to be an environmental scientist.

The Joeys always try to practise speaking, listening, reading and writing at their meetings.

They play games, sing songs in English, and listen to KGRE cassettes.

The Joeys

The Joeys listen to Kang Guru Radio English every week. Sometimes they don't understand a lot. However, they know that the more often they listen the easier it will be to understand. They always listen carefully to the first segment. It's especially for school students and often just for Joeys.

These radio programs often includes Idioms Inggris, Quick Fix and other great language tips. Do you listen too? Check out the radio program in your town.

Joeys-June by Aldo

The Joeys enjoy learning about Indonesian arts and culture at school. They also talk to their parents and grandparents about life when they were young.

They really like stories about local culture in different islands, cities, towns and villages a long time ago. Sometimes they share that information at Joeys Club meetings.

The Joeys also went on a club excursion. They all had lots of fun, as you can see, especially Ali and Samuel. Can you see them?

Joeys in the September KGRE magazine

Last month the Joeys organized a beach clean-up day as part of their Kang Guru environmental activities. They called it their Aussie Day Out. They all sang Australian songs and spoke as much English as possible. Ali, a budding environmental scientist, organized Kang Guru prize packs while Fatimah and Natalya decided on the tasks.

The Joeys’ favourite competition was collecting as much rubbish as possible and then yelling out the names in English for all the different pieces of garbage.

If they could spell the word for each item of trash correctly, they got extra points. Ali and Fatimah won the first competition and collected 324 pieces of refuse. Samuel and Sinta came a close second with 305 and Natalya and Budi found 299.

The litter they gathered included plastic bags, shampoo bottles, small plastic water containers, tooth brushes, broken soft drink bottles, some plastic hair slides, an old thong (sandal jepit) and a torn T shirt. What a load of rubbish!

A heap of it!

Joeys in the December 2007 Kang Guru magazine

The Joeys are having a party! They are all bringing a plate of their favourite food. The invitations say to ‘bring a plate’. Some of the Joeys thought ‘bring a plate’ meant to bring along an empty plate. Oh no!

One of their Aussie friends explained that in Australia, ‘bring a plate’ on an invitation means to bring a plate of food (NOT an empty plate) for everyone to share.
