‘Language is a Habit’. That is an old saying which we always hear in our environment. It means that, if we want to master English well, we must always practice our English as often as possible so that we are accustomed to speaking English. In the era of globalization English is very important, so we formed Nurul Ulum English Club (NUEC) to improve our English.

There are 32 members in our club. We divide our members into two groups. One group is students who joined our annual program ‘English in Ramadhan’. The other is students who didn't join it. We also have an interesting program which includes discussions, debates, face to face and speaking program every morning at 6.30.

We have a schedule to take an English course together, especially every Friday afternoon and Sunday morning. At that time we talk about problems and sometimes we read the KGRE magazine and discuss it. We will use the Listening and Reading Class Set and have a quiz program using the KGRE magazine tasks. There are regulations for our members. They must be active members and they must speak English on ‘English Day’ at our Monday and Saturday meetings.

  • Members of this club visited Kang Guru for the 10th Anniversary BBQ in Octoer, 2007

Joeys Club influenced us a lot. After knowing The Joeys Club in KGRE magazine, we inspired to make an English club. Starting in premiere of May 2007 we declared our club. It is Charming Learners Club. We meet every Thursday afternoon at 4.00 until 5.00 pm. But starting on Sunday 22 nd July 2007, we decided to meet every Sunday afternoon at 3.00 until 5.00 pm. We are from different school, too. But we are in one English course. So we use our course as our base/place to meet.

We take an English course twice a week, but our club is separated from our usual meeting in our English course. And more, our base is near a main street. So, we think it is a strategic place to us to meet (or to do correspondence activity). At the beginning all of us were SMP students. We were in year 7,8, 9. But now we are in year 8,9 and 10 and also in year 6 of elementary school. And we have 22 active members.

We collect some money for doing correspondence or browsing Internet. But we don’t collect it in every month. If the money limit, we will collect again Rp. 1.000 each member. And if we speak Indonesian or Javanese in our regular meeting we must pay Rp. 100 to our treasurer. Our activities are playing games or quizzes, singing an English song, doing some tasks from SMP package (KGRE in the classroom), reading poems. And the last but not the least we always enjoy listening KGRE material in our local radio (Raka FM, Purwoharjo).
