Sasak English Club was established in 2003 in Sukarara Village. At the time there were just a few members and we met just once a week. In the beginning we had some problems finding active members because people in Central Lombok were not so interested in English. So we tried to tell people about our club in schools and villages. Now we have about 28 active members, students and the general public.

The name of our English club refers to the name of our beloved school SMA Negeri 2, located about 6 kilometres south of Mataram. We made the club based on the fact that most of the students are curious to learn English although they still thought, at that time, that English is one of the most difficult subjects at school.

Ten chosen members will be trained for six months, not only how to increase their English but also how to teach. Because as the program of our school they will be appointed the same age tutors who will help their new first year froends at the school to learn English. We meet three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday while on Sunday and holidays we go for a study tour to different tourist attractions in Lombok to practise our English with foreigners from all over the world.

We are looking forward to hearing from other members of KGCC from all over Indonesia in special and from the whole world in general. We love sharing ideas and experiences. Please contact us.

Ayu met with representatives of this club in Mataram on January 10th, 2008

The club started in September 2006 after some of us did community work (KKN). We saw students with a lot of motivation to speak English and decided to start an English club to help them. Our name was chosen because at our first meeting the members spoke Sasak, Indonesian and English. We believe that the way to understand world cultures is to study English because everyone can use it.

All of the members stay in the same dormitory at Ponpes Islahul Ummah NW. We conduct our regular meetings on Sundays at 8:30am and 4:00pm. In the morning we study grammar and vocabulary then in the afternoon we talk about the latest news or issues. At least once every two months we have an excursion to tourist areas such as Senggigi or the Gili islands to practise our skills. Once a month we have a ‘Minggu Bersih’ to clean up the rubbish in our area and promote the importance of a clean environment. This also helps to build a closer relationship with the community. The members pay Rp 1,000 each every month to pay for photocopying.

L’Genda English Conversation Club became a member of KGCC network in September, 2007. L’Genda is an abbreviation from Lopan Generasi Datang which in English means the next generation of Lopan. Lopan is the name of our village.

They have regular weekly meetings where they discuss interesting topics and do grammar games. They also listen to KGRE on RRI Pro 2 FM on Fridays and Sundays and take part in the interactive program afterwards. Most of the club members are SMU students.

Apart from their club meetings, they go on study tours, find a Bule of the month( a special guest from abroad) if available and do outward bound trekking. To celebrate the first anniversary of their club they organized an English contest. They have plans to create an English only zone where everyone has to only speak English.
