Kang GURU's Champions
The Champions help
Kang GURU
to make, and maintain, contact with people all over Indonesia. This valued
assistance often involves promotion of
Kang GURU
and making personal contacts with English language learners and teachers across
the country.
This is very important.
Kang GURU
depends on this kind of support of spreading the word about radio programs,
magazines and the website as Indonesia is such a BIG country.
The Champions help others who are also interested in English. The Champions
also llend assistance with teacher workshops, language clubs and
Kang GURU's
latest service providing assistance to a new network of interactive radio
presenters. Thanks guys.

Kevin Dalton
Project Manager
Kevin did not start out working as an ESL teacher but began his teaching career
as a primary school teacher in Melbourne. After doing that for many years he
decided to try something a little bit different, so ESL teaching seemed a
logical idea, especially if it was in an overseas country. There was an
opportunity for him to work in Lombok in a voluntary capacity in 1990 so he
accepted the position and worked through Australian Volunteers International in
Lombok for two and a half years. In 1993 Kevin returned to La Trobe University
in Melbourne upgrade his English language teaching qualifications. In 1994 he
started work in Surabaya. Ten months later he began working at IALF Bali and
has remained there ever since. He taught on the General English program as well
as on EAP courses, did some hotel work and was involved with Marketing and
Promotion of the IALF. IALF sent Kevin to work in places as far apart as
Kupang, southern Sumatra, Surabaya, Dili, Ambon and even in Cambodia and Laos
on 3 month Teacher Exchanges in 1997 and 1999 respectively. Kevin completed a
Diploma TESAL course in 1997/98 conducted at IALF, Bali. As of January 2000,
Kevin became Manager of
Kang GURU
Radio English.

Sue Rodger
ELT Materials and Training Co-ordinator
Sue Rodger was born in Liverpool and grew up surrounded by the sounds of the
Mersey Beat. She once went to scream at the Beatles! (Her older sister made her
go!) Despite attending a city center school for “Young Ladies” she
was very active in the school netball, tennis and lacrosse teams. She also
cycled and played for the North West Junior Lacrosse team traveling all over
England to play this barbaric game! After leaving school, she went to Nene
College and studied English and Art. After 3 years with her qualifications in
her pocket she went to work as a trainee manager with a hotel group in England.
This financed her trips to the Far East and eventually in 1983 she moved to
Hong Kong. She had several jobs in this exciting city before finally spending
almost 5 years with U.N.H.C.R. and Save the Children Fund teaching at a
Vietnamese refugee camp. In 1988 it was time for a change of scene and she
moved to Brunei. She spent a happy time there riding polo ponies, jungle
trekking, visiting Mulu National Park and staying in longhouses! And teaching
at the Government Schools! Next came Jakarta and she lasted 5 years there,
teaching English before moving to Bali in June 1998. She doesn't see herself
moving anywhere else now until she retires!

Walter Slamer
Walter was at
Kang GURU
from 1 Feb 1997 to 1 Feb 2000. Walter was also a writer for the original series
of 12 pilot programs in 1989 in Jakarta. He is now living in Sydney. Here's an
update from Walter received at
Kang GURU.
Dear all my friends in Kangguru Land,
Since returning to Sydney in 2000 I have been teaching at The Centre For
English Teaching at The University of Sydney. Unhappily, we do not see many
Indonesian students come through our centre: (Right now I am coordinating an
advanced EAP program, and have students from Switzerland, Mexico, Taiwan,
Thailand, Italy and Saudi Arabia. It is a very international place!! But I
would love to see more Indonesians!
Also I am working as a researcher and producer at EssentialViewing (that's one
word!), a company making television documentaries. Mainly we have been making
documentaries about Indonesia, and this has allowed me to travel back to
Indonesia many times, although I was last in Bali 4 years ago! Currently we are
producing 3 programs about the relationship between Australia and Indonesia, so
I will be back there soon, and, hey!, maybe interviewing KG staff and listeners
about their view of the relationship between our countries. I often tell my
colleagues here about KG's motto,
“Good neighbours make good friends.”
As for my family, Ari, who was born in Semarang, is 14 and in Year 10 at high
school, Oliver, 11, is in Year 5 at primary school, and Louise has just
finished her Ph.d. and we have to call her Dr. Louise now!
Take care and enjoy
Kang GURU!!!!

‘It’s been a great experience working at
Kang GURU.
The best part was meeting such enthusiastic teachers, students and KGCC
members. Special thanks to the club leaders and members in Bali, East Java and
Lombok who made me so welcome during my visits. I hope that you continue to
participate actively in KGCC and, of course, continue to have fun with English.
I look forward to seeing you all again during my school holidays next
year.’
