Kang Guru Champions in Indonesia 2010

There are many wonderful people in Indonesia who help Kang Guru. The Kang Guru Champions are just some of them. This valued assistance often involves promotion of Kang Guru. This is very important as Kang Guru depends on this kind of support of spreading the word about radio programs, magazines and the website. It is a great way to help others who are interested in English. Other helpers lend assistance with teacher workshops, language clubs and Kang Guru's latest service providing assistance to a new band of interactive radio presenters.

The seven KGI Champions are Ririn, Suryadi, Wibowo, Asep, Keyko, Syahrir and Fadel.

KGI Champions - International Youth Conference

KGI Champions in Bandung In September 2009, Asep, Suryadi, Wibowo attended a special youth conference set up by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The theme of the conference was “The Role of Youth to Establish Peace: Toward a Future World without Violent Radicalization”. UNESCO worked together with the State Ministry of Youth and Sport of the Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with the National Commission of Indonesia to UNESCO of the Ministry of National Education. One hundred and sixty two participant youths from 22 countries were there.

Ririn lives and works in Kediri, East Java. Why is Ririn a Kang Guru Champion? Ririn joined Kang Guru when she was a keen and popular interactive radio presenter on Radio Bonansa in Kediri. Now she is based in Jakarta but still does alot of work for KGI promoting Kang Guru to teachers and students in that city. Ririn has plenty of good ideas too to help local students and her radio listeners, and is a great supporter of Kang Guru. Ririn spends much of her time travelling around Indonesia for her career as a singer but Ririn still has time for KGI.

Ireen Pudia (Ririn)

Ireen Pudia is Kang Guru Champion but do you know that she is also a singer?
Recently Ayu from KGI interviewed her about her singing career and her latest CD.

Ayu (A): When did you start your singing career?

Ririn (R): I started my singing career when I was 12 years old.

A: After three years away from the music industry, you have decided to make a new CD. What inspired you to do this?

R: I was supported and motivated by my friends cos they think I still have the ability to be a good singer. That's why they inspired me to come back and sing again.

A: What sort of songs do you have in this new album?

R: In my album people will find some gothic-metal song, trance rock and dance-techno and electro.

A: So what's the name of your new album?

R: It's called 'Angel or Evil'. Yes, but my team helps me to edit and write good lyrics to make it more poetic.

A: I've seen some of your video clips. How are you going to promote your video clips?

R: I want to promote my video clip through website, You Tube, and Facebook.

IndoShelter  Semarang 11 July 2008

Dear friends of Indoshelter,

Unfortunately our website is temporarily not working. This because the server isn’t working the way it should! That’s why we send you an update about what is going on in the shelter. So you keep informed.

New member Ratna Puspita has joined Indoshelter. This Indonesian woman with a baby boy of 17 months was looking for a new activity in her life. And she was very enthusiastic about Indoshelter after the first time she stepped inside. Now she will start giving a lesson every Thursday afternoon, and help us with organizing all the things around Indoshelter. So Ratna....welcome on board, we are very happy to have a new sailor!

The school holidays are just finished. On Monday the children will go to school again. That’s why the last 3 weeks we made a different program for the older kids in the afternoon. There was no school so no homework guidance needed.

What did we do.... The kids have been busy, and did a lot of fun things!

On Mondays they studied a Javanese dance, and in the last week they did a performance for the parents and for the members of Indoshelter. All the kids, also the smaller ones joined in the afternoon. Looking very pretty with make-up and fake moustaches. The parents were very proud, and the children very serious. They did a wonderful job, entertaining everyone! On the 17th of August, Independence Day in Indonesia, they will perform again. The RT (head of the neighborhood) has asked them because it all looked so nice.

On Tuesdays they started with making dam and chess boards. Then Keyko, with some help of the fathers, explained the new games. The children never played chess or dam before. They did dam and chess competition on the Tuesdays, with a big final where the fathers where the judges! It is a very good sign that the parents get involved more and more in the shelter.

On Wednesday they did relay games. Playing with water, Ping-Pong balls, straws, buckets, etc etc. You can do a lot with almost nothing! It was great fun splashing around with water and blowing the Ping-Pong balls to the other side of the room with a straw! There was a lot of laughter in the shelter, and even it was a competition, nobody felt disappointed, they just were very happy to play around.

Having Fun The Kids

On Thursdays they did their favorite games, Uno, Mikado, Monopoly, Card games, Snake etc. They love to play these games during the normal opening hours of the shelter. But then they also have to do their homework, English lessons and craft. So they loved it to play the games the whole afternoon!

On Fridays they did craft, they painted T-shirts, which they whore for the dancing performance. Made kites of bamboo and paper, jewelry of macaroni and straws, football flags of all the countries joining the European soccer tournament and Olympic Games medals.

This all sounds as real fun, and it was! But this way we also help their self-esteem by dancing in front of a lot of people, using their brain different with chess and dam, working together in the relay games, using their hands in craft and know they can make something beautiful which is of use, like the T-shirts!

The Dentists

On the final day we had 2 visitors; Dr Varcha and Dr Lisa came to the shelter. These 2 ladies are dentists, and came to explain how and why to brush your teeth. We are very happy that they made time to come to Indoshelter and put o much effort in educating the children and their parents!
Most children have never seen a toothbrush before they come to the shelter. We brush their teeth every day. But with 2 doctors in white jackets it becomes a bit more serious!
They brought a pair of big teeth and a big toothbrush. First they explained how to brush, then a few kids had to come forward to show if they understood. After the explanation the kids all got their own toothbrush and had to practice. When they could do a good job without the toothpaste they had to come to the bathroom and show the doctor with toothpaste. Almost all the children were there, including a lot of mothers. Nobody was crying and the kids where very interested and curious.
Moms asked questions as; ‘how many times a week do we need to brush their teeth, do we need toothpaste, do we clean before eating, does candy harms the teeth’. By hearing these questions we new this was a good activity. If mothers don’t know anything about the care of the teeth, how can the children know? This way we educate the children and their family, and hopefully they will also start to brush their teeth at home. Maybe we should find a sponsor so all the kids can have their own toothbrush and toothpaste at home!

Teeth Time Teeth Time 2

  Setara

The organization we work with organizes scholarships for the children to go to school. They don’t have a lot of funding this year and can barley make sure all the kids can go to school. Normally they give all the kids a set of books and pens at the beginning of the school year. This was not possible this year. So they asked the help of Indoshelter. We are very happy they asked us; they do a lot for us, but we can never do anything to help them. This was the first time we can actually help them. So we found a sponsor to pay for the books and pens. The children and Setara where very happy. Besides this, Indoshelter and Setara work together during the parent meetings. 1 time a month all the parents of the RT gather for a meeting, nowadays this is in the shelter. We hang some pictures, so the parents see what their kids are doing! WE got some nice reactions on that!

Next week we start our normal program again. In the morning we will continue with the playgroup for the young ones, and in the afternoon we keep the big ones busy with homework, craft and lessons. All the children seem to like it a lot to come to the shelter, as they don’t want to leave! Sometimes we have more then 2 groups on 1 day. We don’t want the groups to be bigger then 12 children. So if necessary we spilt the morning and/or the afternoon group in 2.

It is so good to see children getting more confident, healthier and happy. 1 Boy who had difficulties with reading at school can do a good job in reading now because of the extra lessons he got at the shelter. He stands up now, and you can hear him. Before he would make himself very tiny, and wouldn’t make a sound. That’s why we do this; it makes us so happy to see we really make a difference!

That’s it for now! In the coming weeks Mardian’s daughters will make nice cartoon paintings on the front of the house. We are looking for someone to put cement in the back garden, and we are looking for a doctor to do a general check up on the kids, and have meetings to get more funds. So still a lot to do!

As long as the website is out of the air we will inform you by newsletters.
We are very sorry for this inconvenience!

Busy Busy Champions

In September 2006, three of these people were invited to Kang Guru. A visiting AusAID Review Team were also visiting Kang Guru at the same time to find out more about the work of Kang Guru in Indonesia. Ririn from Kediri, Syaharir from Makassar and Suriyadi from Prenduan, Madura, met with the Review Team and informally discussed the activities of Kang Guru in their areas. Their comments and responses to many, many questions proved very helpful to the Review Team. Ririn, Syahrir and Suriyadi are now Kang Guru's first official Kang Guru Champions. They will continue to ‘work’ for Kang Guru and we welcome them to the crew.
