The response from teachers was very positive, and everyone seemed to have lots of fun. It was also wonderful to meet Ibu Isty Kurniawati from SMPN 48 (Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri, or State Junior Secondary School), Seluma, and Ibu Fisni Etarri, from SMPN 47, Seluma. Ibu Isty and Ibu Fisni are English teachers from new schools constructed under Australia’s Education Partnership with Indonesia, which is a wonderful program to improve access to quality education for Indonesia’s school children. Ibu Isty said, “I really enjoyed the training and thank you for the ELL kit. I will definitely use it with my students”.

Bapak Selamat Sudarmanjaya, an English instructor at LPMP, said, “It’s very important to develop the English teaching skills of teachers all over Indonesia. This is the first time Kang Guru Indonesia has been to Bengkulu city and I know the teachers have enjoyed the workshop and learned a lot”. Bapak Selamat hopes that “in the future, Kang Guru Indonesia can return to Bengkulu and give more training in other regions”.

The participants left the workshop with some new teaching strategies and ideas, as well as their own ELL kit each to use with their students. Thank you to MGMP Bahasa Inggris, LPMP Bengkulu, andthe Australian aid program for supporting this workshop.

English Language Teaching (ELT) workshop in Sintang, West Kalimantan

On 13 May 2014, Rahma Diana Sari (Ana), ELT Outreach Specialist - Training and Resources, and Greg Worrell, ELT Outreach Specialist - Media & Communications, headed to Sintang in West Kalimantan to facilitate an English Language Teaching (ELT) workshop. After a very warm welcome from Mr. Lukman Riberu the District Head of the Department of Education and Culture, the Kang Guru Indonesia team was set to start the day with 54 enthusiastic junior high school English teachers.

The workshop sessions were based around the practical application of the English Language Learning (ELL) Kits developed by Kang Guru Indonesia, funded by the Australian aid program. The workshop integrates current teaching methodologies with practical examples taken from the ELL Kits. Teachers are given the role of students to complete the activities, which ensures they have a good understanding of the materials and how to use them in their classrooms.

The ELL Kit, for Years 7 to 9, has been designed as a supplementary learning resource that requires minimal further preparation. The kit includes student worksheets and teachers’ notes that provide clear instructions in both English and Indonesian. An interesting component of the kit are the multiple sets of laminated ready-to-use worksheets, games and picture prompts which are durable and can be used multiple times. Listening activities are included on a compact disk for easy use in the classroom.

Each of the participating schools in the Sintang ELT workshop was given a complete ELL kit to take back to the schools. Kang Guru Indonesia hope the teachers enjoy exploring the learning materials and that their students continue to improve their English, because more than two languages can provide increased access to opportunities.

Thanks to the Sintang District Education Office for organizing a wonderful day and the Australian aid program for supporting this event.
