BF Sunday Meeting and Fabulous Magazines and Stickers
Recently we held a Sunday Meeting which was attended by the Club members from both senior and junior levels. The meeting took place in the lab and in our learning park. There were several activities that we did. Among others, the adviser of our Club gave out the KG magazines to all of us and then we started to read and understand it. He assigned us some tasks relating to the AusAID project and particularly he asked us to focus on certain segments like the one of page 12 - Kang Guru Connection Corner in which our photo can be seen. Every Sunday Meeting we are supposed to discuss other segments. Ideas and information are also translated into Indonesian language. We hope to develop our vocabularies through such activities.

Giving out stickers is the most exciting one because, you know, everybody wants to have more. So if you could send us more stickers please.  The reason why because we not only stick them on our English note books but actually we want to put it everywhere we think it is easy to see. Of course, we are happy if we could collect them.

Here we are happy to send you our photo of Sunday Meeting activities and also KGCC Network photos. Look at the background words, the magazines and the stickers given out, the posters and the logo of KGRE there ... Wow, fantastic, isn't it ...?

Updates On Club Organisation and Membership
Besides our Sunday Meeting - we also formed the new Boards of The Best Forum English Club. It was such a fascinating activity that we could successfully update the Board of the Club organisation and membership. We did the voting attractively.

Unlike our Club organisation before that we sent you on the 28th of May 2001, this new one is a lot more comprehensive and adaptable. We have a vice president and also several coordinators in charge of managing as well as controlling 15 different co-curricular programs as we name them “Commact”, which stands for “Communicative Activities”.

Please find the Boards of Best Forum English Club and the photo which are included here.

One of ther many picture 'pages' sent to KGRE

Since we are officially welcomed and appointed as a member of KGCC Network No.003, we have a lot of club members. So far we have got more than 102 members listed in our club and this will keep increasing in the future time especially because KGRE has become a very important part of our club activities. To be honest, we as members are very proud to be linking in the network because it is a good medium to improve our insight to the outside world. However, so far we have always received the package of the KG magazine 75 copies only. We should have got more so that every member could have it as an 'individual collection'.

Special Information That Is Benefit For Other Clubs In The Network
In this first report we would like to share information on one of the co-curricular activities called “BF Chit Chat Show (CCS)”. We are pleased to describe it in more details as it sounds very interesting for you.

Well, yes, it certainly is. CCS is the most fascinating 'Commact Program' in a sense of our effort to contact to the outside world and to achieve our target in English language acquisition, which is practise the language especially to those as western travelers or foreigners.

To us, learning a foreign language means being prepared to speak the language itself. So the involvement of foreigners in our club activities is not just a matter of practising the foreign language to them but what's more we believe it is a great medium to understand the culture of the language.

Understanding a cross-cultural communication needs putting into practice. That is why, we have always tried our best to invite foreigners for Chit Chat at our place. Where and how we should find them ...? We do this in various ways. We work in a team and make an arrangement to find an Australian or an Italian for instance. We are usually lucky but sometimes we are bad luck in inviting any 'bule'. However, sometimes our Instructor or Club Adviser help us find one. The following are the tips/hints that we do in inviting foreigners to our Chit Chat:

  1. Visiting a hotel where a lot of foreigners stay
  2. We may also find them at Tourist Spots when we have a Sunday Meeting
  3. Sometimes we find at Public Places such as shops, beaches, restaurants, sport centres, Art Galleries etc.
  4. We can also find at Tourist Information Service Centres.
  5. Or we can try to find them where special events and activities take place, for instance on Business Expo or Culture and Arts Festivals.
Once we have met then we introduce our English Club, describing the aims and the benefits of their involvement in the Chit Chat. What advantages that we could gain from their participation. Anyway, we make them sure that we could serve our best. At last, we then make an appointment.

Then the boards and Club members get ready for Chit Chat. We prepare a camera for photograph. Live recording equipment such as audio tape, video shooting. We've got this equipment so that we could always video our guests, and we have it processed into HVS video tape or VCD. Other things and needs concerning with the guests are also considered. Last but not least, we have a preliminary meeting to welcome our guest in which we talk about what sort of information that we need to ask an share. We should also think how to treat our guest so that we can achieve a successful completion of the Chit Chat.

A recent Club activity - an excursion.

Special Chit Chat Cassette Tape for KGCC Network Across Indonesia.

NB from KGRE - Parts of this recording can be heard in KGRE Show No. 3305 due to be broadcast in February, 2002.

We are happy to send you this Chit Chat Cassette page. We can enjoy listen to topics of interest featuring about Australia and its uniqueness. The Chit Chat was being held in such a casual situation that enabled both the teachers and students enjoy the warm - friendly atmosphere. Hopefully you are interested in it and are willingly to give comments and suggestions.

If you think it is valuable for the other clubs in the network, you may want to consider to use it for KGRE show or whatever as long as it is benefit for creating firm friendship among each other. We have also got collections of Chit Chat cassette from foreigners. All of them are lively recorded with the natural situation.

Our Chit Chat Show has been being conducted since more than five years. We invite either native or non-native speakers of English so that the club members will be able to learn and adjust to various English accents spoken in the world. It is important to let them listen to how an Italian, German, French, or other nationalities speak and pronounce English.

We are going to share information on our club activities such as, English Camp, Reflection Night, or some other ones in our coming letters as soon as you write back.

Club Profile

Dear KG,

What a surprising package! We were about to think - no hope! Because it was too late to send the Application form. No doubt, we got it faxed and we made it. We feel excited KG! Thank you very much and be glorious forever!

On Sunday afternoon, 9 December 2001, we held our club meeting (1st consolidation). It was a serious and nice discussion - we have made some changes to our structural. Widow's position (event organizer) has been replaced by Emil, Dhoni, Aas and Yuan. That means we have already four event organizers that are responsible for handling any events at our base.

We are also planning to conduct some spectacular events, especially to welcome Mr. Kevin Dalton - 'Medan English Society in spring' theme - 'English Competition' around March 2002. The aim of English Competition se-Kota Madya Medan is to promote Kang Guru Radio English and KG Connection Clubs in Medan. The competition will be so cool that we plan to invite all high school students to take part in English Proficiency Competition and Panel Discussion with theme 'English is Fun, Fresh and Easy.' On that occasion we do hope that Mr. Kevin Dalton has the pleasure of being the speaker and giving the best tips to learn English effectively (interactive session required).

NB from KGRE
Kevin is unable to attend in spring but will be in Medan around June sometime. More news on that later!

Beside that, we do need a letter of recommendation from KGRE signed by Mr. Kevin Dalton. The letter will be used to get the access and sponsors of the following places.

  1. City Hall - the Mayor
  2. Australia Centre
  3. P. P. I. A. (Pusat Persahabatan Indonesia America)
  4. English First (English course)
  5. C. E. L. (Central English for Learning)
  6. Donators (in search for any)
A social call to Panti Asuhan (Orphanage) will be our great and unforgettable moments. We plan to socialize English among the Orphans and give them spirit that English is friendship and can change our social status too - No doubt.

NB from KGRE

All KGCCs will receive a Certificate of membership from KGRE soon. This can be used to show that you are in fact a member of this fabulous network.

Club Profile

Dear Kang Guru,

We are writing to you to report our club meetings over January 2002 including a special event which we held during the Ramadhan 2001. We hope that you will be glad to appreciate what we are reporting.

We are pleased to express our warm gratitude concerning your willingness in publish our photo in The Pouch. Furthermore we would like to inform you of everything we have done in our meetings in the last few days of January 2002.

Monday Meetings
Monday meetings are especially designed just for speaking skills. Some points which have been practised through these meetings are: how to express 'possibility utterance' (Mon. 7 January), how to express 'opinion' in good English (Mon. 14 January, how to express 'invitation utterance' (Mon. 21 January, and how to express 'certainty/uncertainty utterance' (Mon. 28 January).

Wednesday Meetings
Our Wednesday meetings focused on how to understand text. In the meetings that occurred during January 2002 we chose the Kang Guru magazine as the reading source.

Saturday Meetings
We still present grammar tuition in Saturday meetings. Here are what we have dealt with in these meetings: Uncountable Nouns (Sat. 5 January), Reflexive Pronouns (Sat. 12 January), Relative Pronouns (Sat. 19 January), Irregular Plurals (Sat. 26 January).

Special Event
We also would like to report a special event we held during the Ramadhan 2001.

From the third day to sixteenth day of Ramadhan the club visited Desa Batu Anam in Asahan Regency, North Sumatra. Batu Anam is a remote village which surrounded by hundreds hectares of oil palm trees. It takes about three hours by car to get there from our headquarter. There were twenty persons of club members who took part in this visit. We were all divided into four groups. Every group had a task - namely to manage programs in the dusuns where the groups stayed. The purpose of this visit was to invite elementary school pupils as well as teenagers of the village to adorn the Ramadhan month with useful activities.

The programs we did during the visit were:

  • To teach elementary school pupil at the age of 9 - 11 years old to sing English song, to greet 'Good morning / afternoon or good bye', to say thank you after receiving something, and to teach daily conversation which directly relates to their daily life.
  • To make sure Junior High school students in desa Batu Anam know about KGRE.
  • To teach the teenagers on how to recite the Qur'an (Muslim Holy book) in good manner.
To end this report we are happy to get some suggestions from you. Thanks for all. May God bless you.

Special Request from English Lovers:
To tell you the truth that we can hardly listen to your radio shows because everything broadcast from RRI Medan - one of your selected radio station and the nearest radio station from our area is so hard to hear and so is from RRI Pekanbaru. It is really big problem for us but we will never fall into hopeless because we are 100% certain that you are here - KGRE will always faithfully assist us in some way.

In the kecamatan where we live in there is a new private FM radio station. This station was set up three months ago but don't worry this station has many fans. Most of them are teenagers who are still going to school and it is the only one that our Kecamatan has ever had.

So we wonder if you would select this “DESWARA 88.9 FM” to be your teamwork to help you to broadcast your radio shows?

A Note from KGRE:
Why don't you approach the radio station to see if they will play KGRE for all the English language students in the area? A good job for you - Good Luck!

Dear Kang Guru,

We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to KG. Thank you for sending us the Kang Guru Package. We do appreciate it. We do also hope during the next 12 months we'll be able to develop solid links between all of the members clubs and with KGRE itself.

In our application form you have read:

  • that we would be happy if you come and visit us and RRI Pekanbaru soon. There are some special activities in Pekanbaru during 2002. One of them is Racing Boat (Pacu Jalur), making a great picture with staff teachers. Our question is what is the requirement that we must prepare?
  • that we have distributed Kang Guru Radio English magazines, posters and stickers to everyone who is interested in it. We also plan to promote KGRE to all districts in Riau provinces such as Bengkalis, Rohil, Rohul, Kampar, Siak, Pelalawan districts. We have received your brand new stickers but it's still not enough yet. Would you please send more? We do like the design you made. We'd be happy if you send more. The reason is we will put it in public place and send it to remote areas.
  • of IAMA (Ikatan Alumni MTs Al-Huda). This group is linked with GCC in dealing with extra activities.
Our specific plans are:
  • promoting KGRE to all listeners in Riau province including remote area.

students and English teachers are the groups we think like to know more on KGRE

GCC Sunday Meeting
We have a Sunday Meeting which are attended by the Club members and adviser of GCC itself. The meeting held in the GCC and learning rooms. We discussed not only on how to promote Kang Guru in our area but also we did a couple of activities especially KG English magazine. We do hope our learning process will improve as well.

Club Membership, Events and Activities

  • Up to now, our club has 70 members. We do appreciate KGRE which has sent us more copies of KGRE magazine. We always bring anywhere we go such as at school, café, etc.
  • We went to 'Gramedia' one of the biggest bookstores in our city to find 'tourists'.
  • Some of our members are trained in Journalistic and Computer program at 'LAMI' Pekanbaru freely for a week starting 18th of March until 24th, 2002.Apart from Sunday Meeting, we also plan to have a T-shirt of Conversation Club

Interesting Club Activities
Unlike the other clubs in KGCC network in Indonesia, we've asked to watch more TV on western mini serial or film such 'Layar Emas' on RCTI. To make the lesson more enjoyable, we listen to Western Song such as Savage Garden (The Man From The Bush), Michael Learn To Rock from Denmark, Natalie Imbruglia, etc. Learning English by singing a song is great, isn't it?

We'd like to contact other clubs to share experience one another. A special thank you to Mr. Afrizal, adviser of GCC, who has worked hard for his support to our club.

Last but not least, let's keep in touch one another for good cooperation between the two countries. To be honest, please do visit our club as soon as possible.

A note from Kevin at KGRE -

I would love to visit and hopefully I can later this year. I look forward to meeting you all and having some fun with your Club and with RRI

When is the Racing Boat activity for 2002?

Make sure you send me a copy of the 'Garuda Club' magazine that you are producing, okay?

I believe that you want to contact the COREMAP Project from AusAID? You could write to the Irina Rafliana, the Public Communications Officer for the COREMAP Project.

Club of the Month for May 2002

Kang Guru Fans' English Club
Kupang - East Nusa Tenggara

Club Profile

Kang Guru Fans' English Club is one of the club who has been very active doing many interesting activities with their club members. They also active in promoting Kang Guru Radio English to high school students and university students in their area. It is shown in their letters and activity reports below.

Dear Kang Guru,
Thank you for the Kang Guru Connection package. We were very happy because our club can be one of the Kang Guru Connection Clubs (KGCC). The stickers of club are great but we hope that you can send us more so that we can use it to attract new Kang Guru Radio English Members.

We plan to promote Kang Guru Radio English (KGRE) in our campus next month for the comers of English Department so we hope you can help us with some of our magazines, stickers and other things. We will play games and tell them how to be your members and to be your listeners.

In our next activities in the following months we will have some competition and we hope you can send us more 'Buku Tulis' so we can use them our rewards to those who involve.

We plan to promote KGRE and teach English in some of primary and junior high school, that's why we want to associate with some of Australian Organisation or NGO's that can help us with books or become our donor so that we can help the poor students who need English.

The Club also make announcement to their regular meeting.

Click on this to read it more easily.

Regular club meeting is usually held with the following activities:

  • Praying.
  • Sing an English song and translate them into Indonesian.
  • Speak Up time. Each member will share something that makes him/her happy along the week. This encourage members to speak up and be prepared.
  • Playing Games in relation to studying English grammar such as simple present tense and countable/uncountable nouns.
Here are the details:
  • Divide the group into two teams. Appoint team secretaries.
  • Ask each team to prepare a collection of objects. They could use personal possessions to make this collection such as paper, sticky tape, string, money, etc. Make sure that some uncountable nouns are included.
  • The two teams then have one minutes to study the other team's collection of objects and make list of sentences with the help of secretary and the rest of other team.
  • The teams secretaries then read out their lists such as :

There's a lipstick.

There are some envelopes.
  • Score 2 points for each correct observation expressed in correct English but only 1 point if the English is incorrect. The team with the most points is the winner.
  • Sing the second song.
  • Play another game such as on vocabulary extension.
For example: the group choose six categories e.g. colours, games/sports, animals, fruit/vegetables, jobs, materials. Each player in turn chooses a letter of the alphabet. All the players try to find and write down as many words as they can for each of the six categories beginning with the chosen letter. For example if the chosen letter is P, a player might write down:
Colour Games/Sport Animals Fruit/Vegetable Jobs Materials
Pink Polo Pig

Penguin

Plum

Potato

Painter Plastic
  • Play Tongue Twister.
'How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?'

Evaluation on the Club program.

The Club is also happy with the KGCC Bulletin as they wrote, “Thank you for your helping to send us the Kang Guru Connection Bulletin. We were very happy because it could help us to our activities well”.

Another interesting activities that this active club did was having an internet learning activity as mentioned in their recent email to KG.

'It seems we have good days here for the club is going more active and we have more members from the new English students here. Three weeks ago our club have an Internet learning activity for all the members, and some of them try to send you emails. Have you read them? I hope so! Please reply their mails because they are all looking forward to hear from you. Internet is something new for them.

The week after the Internet activity, we have listening activity with all the members. We listen to the Cassette that you send us for being one of the runner - up of KGRE photo competition and some other cassette that I borrow from campus. It was great! I don't even expect that everyone will enjoy the activities but they all do that.

Sorry, we could not take pictures of our activities, for its still quite expensive for us here in Kupang. I'll try so the club could have a camera next time. I hope you always have time to read our letters even we don't have attractive pictures.

That's all from us in Kupang and we are looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible. Thanks for everything'.

Click on this pic right now, okay?

Club of the Month for June 2002

Fomula English Club
 Jembrana, Bali

The first we want to say thanks a lot for receiving us as the member of Kang Guru Connection Club, and for sending us the Kang Guru Connection package.

We would like to give you some information about our Club Activities:

  • As we told you in our Application Form about our English Club Cafeteria which is held every Friday and Saturday.
These are the interactions:

The Cafeteria opens by the members who are on the Commissaries on that day and other members should help them. All of the students in our school can join in if they like. They can buy snacks and drink that are sold in the Cafeteria. In this case the Club Members are as the waiter or waitress to serve their friends. We expect students to speak English around the English area although sometimes we (the English teachers) saw them speaking Bahasa Indonesia. We try to suggest them to use English. We think this way can motivate students to speak English.

Selling and buying in English - fabulous idea.

  • Information on our program
We don't have any experience yet in developing solid English Club because it is something new for us and our Club has just begun last year.

What we have done in attracting members was by
- registering students from first, second and third class
- doing the selection test
- then officially declared the Club Members

The English activities which we have done :
  • Technique of communication
  • Technique of language function
  • Technique on how to describe something
  • Practising dialogue
  • Communication practice
English Performances. This activity is done by :
  • conducting a quiz contest in our school
  • joining speech contest in our region
  • joining a telling story contest
We hope that KG (Native speaker) can visit our Club to gain more information and experience such as:
  • Club members can practice English directly with native speaker
  • We know more about your experience from visiting other English clubs
  • We can learn more about how to use English correctly
  • We want to get more information about environment and students in Australia.
Thanks for sending us the Kang Guru Connection Bulletin and for sending Kang Guru magazine to some of our members. They are very interesting material to read. Through this letter we want to say sorry for being late in sending reports. We were very busy preparing to join the telling story contest that was held by Education Department of Jembrana Regency. We worked so hard for two weeks in selecting the best students and in preparing them for the contest.

As the result of the competition we must thank God because two of our Club members winning the third and sixth position.

Active indeed - great to see.

Other information from our Club:
We agree and interested with your motto about Good Neighbors Make Good Friends. We think there must be a good relation between us for example between one school to another school, one province to other province and of course between one country to other country like Indonesia and Australia has a good relationship as neighbour countries.

What about our invitation to visit our Club that you have postponed last month? I hope you would like to come this month. We are still waiting for you.

Club Get Together in Makassar
June 23rd, 2002
Written by Ogi from KGRE

All the Clubs and the sponsors inc. AusAID, RRI Makassar and Miami Icecream

The first and the long-awaited English Club Get Together for South Sulawesi finally took place on 23 June 2002 in Makassar, the capital city of South Sulawesi. It was held in the at the auditorium of RRI Makassar. It was a bright and sunny Sunday and there were about 250 participants happily attending and participating in the one-day event. They were active club members from the 6 in the Kang Guru Connection network in SULSEL.

Here is the full report of the event
Planning and preparation was actually begun when Kevin went to Makassar in early April. KG asked Pak Syahrir Badulu, Advisor of Best Forum to invite Chairman/President from other Clubs in South Sulawesi area to have a meeting to discuss the possibility of holding KGCC Get Together in Makassar. Lots of ideas and suggestions were expressed in that meeting. The next step was to determine the suitable date both for KGRE and Club members to participate. It was agreed then that the event would be held on 23 June 2002.

The first Planning Meeting at Best Forum Club                       Best Forum members hard at work with English

From the very beginning Best Forum English Club, lead by Pak Syahrir Badulu and his enthusiastic club members, offered lots of assistance and with participation of members of other Clubs they formed the Organising Committee. The main task of the Organizing Committee is to handle all the preparation needed including making contact with other Clubs, getting sponsors, administration for registration. During the last two months lots of emails were coming and going between KGRE and Pak Syahrir Badulu, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. Certainly, it wasn't easy work for all of us!

The Get Together Entry Ticket Click on this Entry Ticket to make it larger.

Preparations were well underway and on Saturday, 22 June at about 3 pm, Kevin and Ogi from Kang Guru went to RRI, accompanied by Pak Syahrir Badulu from Best Forum, to check the venue to see if it was ready for the BIG DAY. Other members of organizing committee and members from several clubs were there. They were busily putting the big KGCC banner on stage along with their own club decorations and banners from the sponsor. Tables were arranged for registration as well as checking the sound system. One or two Clubs were seen doing rehearsal for their Clubs' presentation. They finished the work just before 6 pm and we were all looking forward to the next day.

Sunday, 23 June 2002
The day started early. Organizing committee members were busy again making sure that everything was in place and working. At the same time participants from other clubs started coming in. It was good to see that people were so eager to see what would happen next. After a hectic registration the event was finally started at 9.30 am.

Two members of Best Forum English Club came up first with introduction about Kang Guru Connection Club. They did it in such a fine way, really professional! Then followed a welcome speech from Pak Syahrir. He thanked KGRE for giving such great opportunity to English Clubs in South Sulawesi to have a special, and the first, Club Get Together. Pak Mukidi, head of RRI Makassar was next to give speech and that he was happy that RRI Makassar could assist in the event by providing the auditorium and hoped that this event will encourage people to improve their English.

Kevin summed up the opening ceremony by thanking the Organising Committee for their hard work organising the event. He thanked RRI for their continuing support to KGRE and hopes that RRI Makassar will soon conduct the interactive show. He also thanked the sponsor, the Miami Ice Cream. Most importantly he thanked the hundreds participants from all over South Sulawesi who were there to participate. It's obvious that we could not hold the event without participants and KGRE was grateful for that.

Over 250 KGCC members at RRI, Makassar

Fun activities followed making all participants actually get together and mingle. Kevin asked participants to stand up and with his whistle grouped them into several categories such as female and male, certain birthday months, different school levels, and certain age groups. During this activity participants were asked to talk to others, introduce themselves and make new friends. Eagerly and noisily participants followed his instructions. It was a great and fun way to interact with others. Finally he made them into groups of maximum 6 people from 3 different Clubs to follow the next activity.

It was a Language Quiz activity. Some of the questions were easy and some were difficult. People were frantic at first and kept thinking the earlier questions while they had to listen and answer other questions. Door prizes from KGRE announced after the quiz. What was in the door prize package? A little koala toy, a pin from Qantas, an IALF purse, an Aussie idioms postcard, an IALF hat and a KGRE T-shirt. Fantastic!

Mini presentations from Clubs came next. The first one was from PEMCC with drama about becak driver's life. It brought lots of laughter while the audience happily ate cups of yummy ice cream distributed to them for free from Miami Icecream. The second presentation was a poem read by a member of English Teacher Working Group - Maros. Then followed by the 'Total Football' comedy from IPPM - Pangkep. It was really entertaining moment for all.

Pak Hubert, a guest speaker from IAPSD - Makassar Tourism Training Project came to give short presentation about the AusAID funded project. The information given was useful particularly to those who're studying at 'Akademi Pariwisata'. He also gave some useful advise on learning English as he's not native speaker himself. Many people asked him questions even after he finished his presentation.

Hubert Amann from the local Makassar Tourism Training Project from AusAIDSartono from the new AusAID project called Access

Another guest speaker, Pak Sartono from the ACCESS project came in next with his information on this new AusAID project. Participants interested in community development were keen to ask Pak Sartono about this new AusAID project in SULSEL.

Then lunch time. However, lunch box came late, so people were provided with snack first. While enjoying snack, some participants voluntary entertained audience by singing songs. Honestly, they were talented singers. Kevin joined in with some games and prizes.

After a quick lunch, the audiences were once again entertained with presentations from another two clubs. Makes Al-Markaz, who is working with street children, presented a lively dancing performance. Lots of hands clapped for them.

Street kids under the care of the MAKES Club performed dances.

This was followed by Best Forum Club with a comedy and special performance from Pak Syahrir Badulu with his 'Pertunjukkan Sulap'.

A Music Quiz from Kevin was next. Participants were back in their former groups and they were all ears to this activity. It was interesting to see how keen the participants to answers all questions. There were lots of discussion among group members.

More door prizes from the sponsor, Miami Ice Cream and even more from Kang Guru. Many anxious faces with tickets ready and lots of cheers from participants, especially when friends from their same Club won. The winners of Language Quiz and Music Quiz were announced and that really made people go mad with excitement. Each member of the winning groups took away fabulous prizes from Kang Guru such as an Oz Study Pen, Aussie animal signs, Aussie traditional music cassettes, stubby holders from Oz and English language activity books.

Presidents and chairman of all participating clubs were presented with a special package from Kang Guru which they can use for their club activities. The new and popular 'Kang Guru Reading Class Set' was one of the special gifts for Clubs.

Lots of pictures were taken to conclude the day. The Club Get Together proved to be great fun and a great way to maintain friendships, make new friends as well as learning English.

Club of the Month for August 2002

Madiun English Conversation Party
Madiun, East Java

Members of Madiun English Conversation Party has been working hard on keeping their Club an active one. Regular activities were held for club members to participate such as Club meetings, outing programs, and English competitions in the form of quizzes, writing and reading love letter contest, funny speech contest and others.

One of the interesting things that this club has been doing is their good relationship with both RRI Madiun and RKPD Caruban as mentioned in their letter below.

'On 7th of May, MECP was invited to have a live interactive programme on RRI Madiun. They asked us again about our activities and about Kang Guru Connection Club. It was really great and now we are prouder to be the Club member of your English learning connection Club. Many listeners called us and most of them were curious to know more about MECP. There were even lots of questions about things we hardly know such as ADS and AusAID activities here and also some places in Australia.

By the way, RRI has its own English interactive program three times a week on Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 4 pm. One of our member ie Ms Ari is a broadcaster of this English interactive programme.

I do believe it would be a great idea if Kang Guru has an interactive programme, I am sure it will be something new and interesting for all of English lovers in Madiun.

On 26th of May, we held 'English Conversation Party' (our monthly regular meeting). There were two important guest from RRI Madiun attended the meeting. We had a very interesting 'English debate'. We sing together and also played games.

RKPD Caruban is about 30 kms from Madiun. We sent you a record of our 'English Conversation Party on air' at RKPD Caruban. Sorry it wasn't a perfect and complete record because of our technical condition. Wish you could give us suggestion to make this program better. Now this programme is handled by Mas Heru and some of our members in Caruban.

We will be happy if Kang Guru Radio English is also broadcast here'.

They are also grateful for the Pouch bulletin as expressed in their letter.

'We would like to thank you very much for sending us The Pouch. It's great because all of our members are reminded to keep on improving our English and feel motivated again. The Pouch helps us a lot. We enjoyed reading it, our favorite topic to talk about from it is 'cultural anecdotes' segment. It's fun to read about funny things usually happen because of this culture-shock.

We read about Excellent Club in Jombang at the Pouch. They were great and the Club was so lucky since you had visited them. We do hope that next time would be our Club turn. We also would like to hear from Pak Hakim about 'KGRE Club Get Together' next September. Thanks a lot'.

Some regional club want to get connected with KGRE via WECC. So we hope Kang Guru is going to assist us. Club of the Month for November 2002

YPRU English Conversation Club Pati, Central Java

Check out our new Kang Guru Connection sticker - thanks Gene.

After a long time of not sending their reports on their club activities, this English Club in Pati is back. Read about their interesting activities and they even a new name for the Club and new leadership.

'First of all we want to thank you for all your attention to our Club. Indeed we are still active and absolutely still interested being the Member of KGCC. We realise that for several months we haven't given you our Club report. Therefore we need inform you a lot about our club activity.

We have received the Kang Guru Reading Set Package and we thank you very much for it. It really surprising us and make us more enthusiastic in learning English because all members could enjoy the magazines and also the cassettes.

We need to give some important information about our Club that is our Club name has changed from English and Exact Club become YPRU English Conversation Club with new leadership of Nur Chasanah.

We have some new programs such as poetry reading, drama (but we have problem in getting English scripts), Quiz time. And also new performance of our Mading (wall magazine) which consist of 12 columns; Sportakuler, Talk, Hot Wews, What's up, Chicken Soup, Language Corner, Poem, El-Din, From Us, Maggy, Pro-Mag, Bu Laras Answer.

We have meeting every Wednesday and Monday. So far, we completely enjoy our activities, we learn to pronounce the word in English with cassette, discuss some hot topics and conversing. Here are the activities during the meeting:

  • Listening comprehension.

We also call it 'Music Meeting' because we do activities by listening to English songs. We listen to the song, write down the lyrics, make correction on our writing compared to the original lyrics, then some members have to present the meaning of the lyrics and followed by question and answer from all members.

  • Discussion

Usually we make suggestion for the leader about club activities such as adding quiz time, translate Indonesian short story, conversation, using language laboratory, speech English, drama and pronunciation.

Last month, after receiving the Pouch, we copied it to all members and discussed it and each member had to give their opinion about the 'Pouch'. All members really enjoy the 'Pouch', especially to Clubs of the Month section episode Formula English Club. Their activity was fun and seems simple to do. Maybe we will imitate it next month.

  • Debate time

Debate is another exciting activity. Here we can share ideas, opinions, comments, critics, and protest. We can also improve our ability in speaking and understanding the problem. We divide members into groups of four. Each group has to present their own ideas and they will make argument and stand on their opinions. The most active person will be The Queen of Debate Time.

  • Oral Communication

This is important to encourage members in emphasizing English communication. Here they can perform the dialogue in English freely with their partners. The subjects chosen are simple matters but at least they really enjoy it.

  • Language games

This activity encourages members to express something using simple sentences. For example in a game about physical description. Members are divided in pairs and each member has to describe the physical features of their partners. Simple sentences such as 'Fitriy is from Pati, she looks rather thin ...'

Being able to make physical description on people is important in certain situation like when we get robbed etc. We can also use compound adjectives such as blond-haired, sallow-faced, or dark-skinned.

  • Grammar study.

We also study about grammar. For example in one meeting we study about noun clauses. At the end of meeting, we do some exercises and we have homework about this lesson.

Our Club doesn't have activities during Ramadhan and Idul Fitri.

We really need your suggestion to fill our meetings with some interesting language games. We hope you will respond this request.

At last, thanks a lot for your regards. We wish this relationship would not ever be broken up so soon. We love you and good luck'.

Club of the Month
December 2002

Eliza's Foreign Language Centre Lombok, NTB

Here is a selection of information contained in Club Actvity reports (CARs) from this Club. They are certainly busy at that Club.

September Activities at EFLC

Our activities this month are the same as last time, we still have time to teach English on Friday, Saturday, and Monday from 04.00 to 05.30 every afternoon. There are three teachers who teach at my Club i.e. my father on Friday, Mr Ngurah Adi Sudana from Bali on Saturday and I teach on Monday.

Oh ya, today besides our club EFLC members, we have got two students for a English private course. They take time at night because we don't have any time again. Those two students are SMU students and one of them is a mask seller who always has a job with foreigners and tourists so to make his English good he studies here. The English privates have got three nights every week. That is our information about our English club and here I will tell you about our teaching English method. Today I use a new step to make my members interested, especially for my little members because if possible we will mix all the members from the elementary, who are still blind about English, with the elementary who good in English. Then I make a plan to use a travel step for the elementary who know little in English. There are seven persons who are at that level, of course we use research to know it. So when the time to learn English comes I use twenty minutes asking them about the last lesson, it is to memorise them with all the earlier lessons. Then I give them the time to ask some questions to me, maybe we spend thirty minutes for that activity.

We continue to travel but this travel is not going to the beach like other English Clubs but we travel around the green rice fields - the fresh air. And the best panorama of our village really makes them interested in learning English. By this travel they will show so many things to 'up' their spirit and their brain, for example when my members saw jagung, kelapa, gunung, etc. they ask me directly so it will improve their vocabularies about the things around them. After that I order them to talk about all that they saw with their friends. Wow and fantastic!
A Note from Captain Kangguru - What a great idea - really local travel so there is no need to go a long way away from the village.

I like to see their big spirit in talking English although of course they are still too little because they're still elementary students. I like to see them asking me so many questions about everything. Really dear Kang Guru, it's very fantastic to learn with them and play with them in English. If you could feel what I feel I am sure that you will never go away from them. You will never want to lose your activities because all of them are like a dream when I play with them and they show their smiles around me. I hear their voices talking English so hard like they want to master it.

Dear KGRE, I have read your questions in the POUCH Survey about  contacting other clubs.  I tell you that I often phoned several clubs but I always  got any answer. Maybe they are absent. I really do not know. So I try to send a letter to one of the KGCCs but till this time my club never got any answer from that club. That's why I never make contact again. I still remember when I phoned the Seal Club at Denpasar, Bali, maybe I ever contact them for five time on the other day but there is no answer that made me disappointed dear Kang Guru. So I now finishing contacting other clubs. I'm sorry for that I don't mind to stop the contact but that time I got so many private problems that made me feel in so bad situation. Sorry, from this time I promise to contact all the club.
A Note from Captain Kangguru - Sorry about that BUT we are trying to encourage all Clubs to make sure they answer all correspondence from a KGRE linked source.

April 2002
Dear Kang Guru. I've got your letter and I'm so sorry really sorry about my latest activities report. In fact, in January 2002 I've made all of my Club activities but unfortunately on that month I had so many problems that I've had to solve and try to find the good way to follow this life better than before. I felt that time was my pity day or my sadness month. It really that made me to be more patient than before. All those problems made me down in studying and made me never attend to my club again.

23 December 2001
We went to the Senggigi Beach. We were having meeting at Holiday Inn with several native speakers. They are Mr Frank Liebherr, Brydie Lee Kennedy from Bondi Junction, Australia, Judet Love and Sluet. They were so happy when theyplayed with our members. They taught our members how to like English and learn English by playing. It was very interesting day for us.

9 December 2001
Dear Kang Guru. I'm so happy when I got your Kang Guru Connection Package. It's up my spirit to make my course be the best in learning English and of course it's up my spirit to learn and study English hard. Because as I informed you that English is my hobby.

Tuesday Meeting At EFLC
In our Tuesday Meeting we presented reading, vocabularies and how to introduce each other. It is for the basic one level students for elementary school.

And for the Level Basic Two and Three we presented reading, answering the questions, dictation, intonation and how to read and speak. That time we presented about grammar tuition because as we know that a good composition and sentences needed in good grammar.

In our course 'EFLC' we not only show our ability to speak but also how to speak in front of so many people and of course that needs self-confidence. In my opinion, there are so many persons who have different abilities. That's why we really need  'Self Confidence' to practice our English and to show our ability to our parents. Therefore once in three months we present the agenda to celebrate the graduate of our course students. In that agenda we invite all the students' parents to enjoy their children's graduation and at that time we ask each student to speak English and to practice their English in front of their parents.

Dear Kang Guru, besides those activities, we also have outside activities such as welcoming tourists or native speakers to our course. Our students are really happy and their spirit is up when they study and play with the guests. And until now we still make connections with the tourists and the guests who come to our course. They said that they're happy and enjoyed studying and playing with the students.
