KGCC members from Denpasar and Jombang visit together in the Kang Guru office at IALF Bali

Hakim (in yellow) visited KGRE on June 21st together with members of The Six Sense Club from Bali. It was great to see them and they are pictured in the KGRE office with Ogi.

It was terrific to see members of two KGCCs getting together and sharing ideas, having fun AND using their English. Hakim is from The Excellent Club in Jombang, East Java.

Club of the Month for December 2004

English Conversation Circle Meeting Club - Makassar, South Sulawesi

Club Profile

This club which is located in Makassar joined the Kang Guru Connection Club Network (KGCC) in July 2004. They have been in regular contact with KGRE with reports on their fun activities. Here are some comments from the Club members and their wonderful activities.

Comments from Club members:

"ECC say thanks for KGRE. KG gives big role for ECC. The Club meeting is more active and enthusiastic with you. All the members have fun with your connection. Your magazine gives advantages and more information. I say that KGRE is spirit and motivation". (Rifyal Mukarram).

"I love KG. I have more knowledge. I'm always attractive with your tasks. I have more desire with KG. You improve my English. KG is my friendship". (Eka Saputri).

Regular Club Activities:

  • Saturday English Meeting.

This is the core of our activity because practise out is the best way to improve English. This meeting runs from 9am until 12pm. There are parts in this activity. They are Welcome Speech, New Comers Introduction, Discussion, KG Audio Show, Games and Closing Speeches. On games, the appointed committee gives the fun way about English. After that, we give some souvenirs of KGCC to the members such as KGRE magazine.

  • Spending Night.

It is one of interesting activity of ECC. Spending Night means that we used all night in English activity. This activity runs from 8pm until 4am. This event held once a month. The night activities include Opening Speech, Introduction, Discussion, Games, Debate Contest and Closing Speech. There are also Role Play (Drama), Sing a Song and Speech Contest. ECC invites clubs from other university or college.

Highlight Activity - English Camp

On 24 - 26 September 2004, eight members of ECC participated in the English Camp which was held by BEMJ FBS - UNM. They are Echa, Fitri, Oki, Mila, Fifin, Memet, Anto and Yayank. Our team was called 'Terminator'.The name is taken from film title. We chose this name because terminator means strong, power and terminate. We also made cheers. The cheers was 'We are Terminator Team. We came to here to terminate all teams. There were many games during the Camp activity such as Dancing Contest, Cooking Contest, Queen Contest, Mummy Contest, Speech, Cheers, Song Contest, etc.

The event was held in Loka Camp Bantaeng. The place is really beautiful and really cold. English camp is one of the way to improve English. We hope that confidence, ability and brotherhood could be increased. With simple equipment such as stove, tent, carpet, flash light, plate and food, everybody realizes that natural object is the real life.

And yes, Terminator was the First winner.

Here are reports on some of the contests:

Queen Contest

Congratulation! Especially for Oki. He dressed in a woman style with confidence. Make up stylist was us. We laughed because we made special style. All of us smile and happy. And our team was winner of Queen contest.
Cooking contest

Hii.! That's delicious food. We cooked fried rice (nasi goreng). We started to cook with special ingredients plus happiness and spirit. The menu was called 'Nasi Goreng Jakarta'.

Mummy Contest

This event was interesting. The judge prepared toilet tissue for each team and one of the member to represent the team. 'Memet' is one of our team and we made him looked like a mummy. The rule of the game was to be careful, not to tear the tissue until finished and just showing the eyes.

Club of the Month for November 2004

English Society Club RRI Semarang - Central Java

Club Profile

English Society Club RRI Semarang is an English club which is located and gets support from RRI Semarang. The members are also involved in English Interactive Program which is called 'The Central Java At A Glance'. Here is what they wrote to KGRE after joining KGCC.

First of all we would like to say thank you very much for accepting our club into KGCC. All of ESC member were happy when I showed your letter to them. We read your letter together and most of them screamed out because they felt so happy. Thanks again KGRE! We hope that in the future we will be a good partners with KGRE in developing English in Central Java.

KGRE had the opportunity to visit them in early October and they are really an active English club. And we are happy to make them as Club of the Month for November 2004. The following is report about their activities.

Members?
ESC members are around 175 people. They are senior high school students, college students, workers, and even housewives. But only about 50 people are active. This is because they live in out of Semarang. But they always keep in touch with us by joining/calling the English interactive program called 'Central Java At A Glance". Some ESC members are also involved with the 'Central Java At A Glance' program by being guest announcers.

Activities?
Routine Discussion
This activity is called 'Weekly Sundae Meeting'. We have discussion once a week every Sunday from 11am to 1pm at Karawitan Room of RRI Semarang. We usually discuss about new-fresh topic that have been chosen a week before based on the agreement of our membes. We get the topic from magazine, newspaper or based on the hottest and newest issues. Sometimes we also used topics from POUCH and Kang Guru magazine. Some of the topics we discussed were studying abroad - advantages and disadvantages, finding a soul mate from the internet.

Social Work
Social work is one of ESC's yearly agenda. For this year, this program was held in Ar-Rahman Orphanage which is at Jl. Kramat Raya Kudu RT.03 RW.02 Genuk - Semarang. There were 65 orphan - children (who are SD, SMP, SMU students) and about 15 orphan - adults. The orphan adults help to support the finance and to take care of the orphan - children. Our activities there were having 'Dhuhur Pray' together, sharing and introducing one to another, playing games, and introducing English to the children. Some of the games were in English such as how to greet and introduce to a new friend, mentioned some English vocabulary. The winners got the prizes and AusAID balloons from KGRE. They were very happy especially when we told them that the balloons came from Australia. We also made the 'Blowing Balloons' game. The winners also got prizes from ESC.

Special Activity
In September 2004 we had a special activity to celebrate the Radio Day by holding 'Jalan Santai' competition. Thank you for the KGRE T-shirts. That's really help us to show our identity for the one and only English Club on RRI Semarang. And we were proud to wear KGRE T-shirt. Jalan Santai was held on September 12, 2004. Started at 6am in front of RRI building. There were many participants and after the competition we promoted KGRE by spreading flyers to participants and gave them some gifts such as stickers, posters and balloons. We also asked them to join ESC Sunday fun meeting at 11am. They were really interested and curious about our activity. Some of them asked about how to contact KGRE and we were pleased to give them the information.

Last week we had a program and invited a foreigner from France. Her name is Sandrine Borromet. She is one of the volunteer of Indonesia International Work Camp. She really enjoyed the meeting and she said that she was happy because she thought that the members are very keen in English, even though our English is still 'gado-gado' but we were brave enough to speak with her.

New Activities

In October we will have new programs such as

  1. Listening to the KGRE August audio cassette and we will make a quiz to attract members to be active.
  2. Sunday Fun On Air with ESC on RRI Semarang every Sunday at 6-7pm. We give chance to members to increase their knowledge about the broadcasting program on RRI Semarang.
  3. We will have a new program to invite foreigners and it is called "Londo of the month". This program will be held once a month.

So we hope KGRE will send us souvenirs such as stickers, poster, buku tulis, keyring,
and others for those activities.

Note from KGRE  - we will!!!!!

Club of the Month for October 2004

Student English Activity – University Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta

Student English Activity or better known as SEA – UMY is one of the most active clubs in the KGRE Connection Club network. They never fail to send reports about their many and excellent activities. It is quite clear that this club is well-organised and well-managed by reliable people. They also follow democratic rules in electing the President of the Club and the board members. It seems that every activity is carefully planned and implemented with active participation from all the Club members. This confirms the SEA’s motto ‘It is only for globally minded students’.

Here are some their wonderful activities which we hope can inspire other clubs to do the same.

Inter Faculty English Debate (held annually since 1999)
Inter Faculty English Debate (IFED) is an English debate competition for students of UMY. It contributes greatly to the students' critical and argumentation skills. It also brings good advantages as a medium for student to develop their English capability. In line with this activity we also actively participate in several nation-wide debate competitions such as Inter Varsity English Debate (IVED), Indonesian Students Forum (ISF) and Java Overland English Debate (JOVED).

Publish Newsletter which is called SEAM (Student English Activity’s Media)
The newsletter is intended to increase our skill in writing English articles. Most of the articles are originally reported by SEAM’s journalists and some articles are submitted by readers and SEA’s members. So far, the advantage of SEAM appears on our daily activities such as with grammar problems. Mr. Daniel Bampton from Australia Volunteers International is the Language Advisor and helps us on editing some articles.

Culture Seminar – Watch France Watch Indonesia
This activity was held on Friday, 18 June 2004. The event consisted of a Cultural Seminar and Saturday Night Movie with the grand theme "How To Deal With Pluralism Through Culture". As expected this event enriched understanding of culture diversities between Indonesia and France to all the community and raised a high appreciation from the audience, especially students in Yogyakarta.

New Members Recruitment

This year the recruitment process started with registration time where 203 students from different faculties filled in their registration forms. They have to pay Rp 2,500 and then they get nice sticker from SEA. This is then followed by interviews which is run for two days: 10 – 11 September. Students have to respond suitably to some questions from interviewers about their motivation, personality, performance, English capability, achievement and experienceiwith organisations. There were 131 students who attended the interview.

After the interview time, all the interviewers got together at SEA office to decide which students were to be accepted. Finally through a process of recommending, lobbying and debating there were 60 students who were accepted into SEA.

Then there is an Outbound Activity for the new members of the Club. It is a 'must activity' for the new members because the activity includes team work, physical, creativite, brain challenging and talented performances. For this year, the Outbound training activity was held in Mbebeng Kaliurang regency. The outbound training consist of

  1. Opening ceremony
  2. Praying and KULTUM
  3. Introducing SEA to the new members, it went in midnight where there was a Question and Answer session.
  4. Game work (the members gathered on group, they have to play Drama in English)
  5. Jerit Malam ( the members gathered near a grave area near the Villa to know there mental spirit)

On the second day, the real outbound activity, the members were doing their journey following the route to the Post 1 (Team Work Post), Post 2 (Creativite Post), Post 3 (Physical Post), Brain Challenge Post, and Talent Post. It was a long distance to get to the post where they walked through nice scenery around Merapi Mount. When they reached each post there were several problems they had to solve. It started in the early morning from the Villa where every group had limited time during their departure to get the final post. 47 new members joined the outbound activities. They divided in 8 groups. They seemed so enthusiastic and  willing joining the outbound activity. After they reached post 5 they had 'Repelling'. Well it was so scary because some members had never done that. But we rent a trainer to do this challenge. The outbound finished in the afternoon, We returned to Yogya at 6pm. It was a successful event as shown in the photographs.

  • Another achievement is that SEA is the first winner of ‘Lomba Kebersihan Kesekretariatan dan Administrasi’ at University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. We got prize money and we plan to held Study Comparative or buy the new TV for the Club use.

KGRE Notes: Congratulations! Personally I really like the idea of having competition on cleanliness. I think not many universities hold such competitions. I remember when I was a student myself that the image of students' admin room or common room was always dirty. Now your university has stepped forward by conducting such a simple and yet very important aspect of life. I believe that we should look after our environment and making it clean is even better.

Connection with English Language Course
Some SEA’s members join the English Conversation Course in American Corner UMY and the teachers are Mr Endro (Director of American Corner), Mr Abdul Rajab (SEA’s member), Mr Guntur (ex-SEA’s member). This course is free and coordinated by some members of SEA under regulations from the American Corner. This course started in June 2004 for UMY students only. Previously we held our own course for SEA’s members only including writing skills training, pronunciation courses, translations course and it is still running. The people who became teachers were Mr Jati, Mr Endro, Mr Roy. They are from the Language Training Centre UMY and some ex-members of SEA (Mas Guntur, Mas Nalendra) as the substitute teacher and observers.

Club of the Month for September 2004

Gazebo English Study Club – Trenggalek, East Java

Club Profile

Gazebo English Study Club is actually an English course. They wanted to form a small English study club to help students in learning English but because they didn’t understand about possible structures then it became an English course with the same name.

Notes from KGRE: We are happy to help the members of this English course because the activities are dedicated to help people in the area, especially high schools students, learning English.

Club Profile:
Gazebo means a small building designed to give wide view of the country around. It is placed in the central of Trenggalek town, 1 km from the town square. Trenggalek is mountainous with beautiful scenery. We have 100 lively members who are always varying every 4 months. They are from high schools and general people but most of them are senior high school.

The club activities are:

  • General meeting which is held three times a week.
  • Going excursion as well as practicing English which is called Happy Sunday and is held once a month.

It’s called ‘HAPPY SUNDAY’ because it happens on Sunday. It was the first time we went to Ja’as mountain next to our place. It’s just for about 15 m, but if we want to reach to the top of mountain we must walk for about 1 km. It was dry season, so it was as hot as fire. The students had to imagine the mountain as Borobudur temple. We divided the students into 6 groups. Every groups has one guide and three foreigners. We will choose the Best Guide and Foreigner. The guide had to explain about Borobudur in a detail and the foreigner had to ask some questions. They must speak English and if they break the rule they will get punishment. We started to hike the mountain at 8am. We had to take a rest in some places because it was tiring enough to reach the top of mountain. Yup, we reached the top ‘horeeeeee’ the student shouted. Even it was hot but we were happy. From the top of the mountain we could see beautiful scenery. We admired God’s creation. We could see many mountains around Trenggalek. After taking a rest and drinking, we did quiz show. Then we went down. We arrived at Gazebo at 11.00am. While taking a rest we were listening to music. We gave stickers and prize to the best guide and the best foreigner. The prize was a book and postcard from KGRE. We planned to go to different places next time. It will be fascinating program.

  • Tour to tourism destination such as going to Bromo.

Tour to Bromo on May 17, 2004. It was the first tour to Bromo mountain. Only a few students could join the tour because it needed much money. We went to Bromo in the night and we arrived there at 2am. It was dark and cold. We waited until 5 o’clock. To our surprise, there were many foreigners there and the students practised their English. We also went to Coban Rondo waterfall and Kusuma Agrowisata in Batu, Malang. It was fascinating tour and the students said that they wanted to go to Bromo again. Now Bromo is exploded, we hope we can go there next time.

  • Closing meeting which is held once in four months.

We did many activities such as speeches, reading a poem, singing a song, drama perfomance and dances etc. The purpose of the activity is to improve English, to show ability and to increase motivation while giving certificates. On May 3rd, 2004, 200 students joined the program and they were so happy to celebrate it. It was the busiest one in the club. For about 120 students are from the 3rd grade of SMA. Now they left Gazebo to continue their study to university but sometimes they still come to Gazebo just for visiting. It’s nice, isn’t it?

Note from KGRE:
The KGRE radio program can now be heard from Radio LIUR FM in Tulungagung, every Saturday at 6pm on FM 90.9 MHz. We hope that this can solve the problem faces by students in Trenggalek area who find it difficult to get a clear sound from radio.

Club of the Month for August 2004

Sebauk Conversation Club – Bengkalis, RIAU

Club Profile

This active club in Bengkalis was founded by Pak Afrizal and his close friends. Pak Afrizal was formerly the advisor of the Garuda Conversation Club (GCC) in Pekanbaru, Riau. Unfortunately when he decided to move to Bengkalis many members of KGCC also left the club because they have graduated from the school. Pak Afrizal then initiated to make a new English club in Bengkalis and it is called Sebauk Conversation Club (SCC). This Club remains being an active one since joining KGCC in September 2003. Here are some of their activities as written in their recent CAR to KGRE.

We do hope you are healthy, strong and enthusiastic on your travel across the country, as well as doing daily administration and activities.

Firstly, we want to say a big thank you to KGRE for sending the magazine to The Regent of Bengkalis and also to some other government official. The Bupati of Bengkalis, Pak Syamsurizal, knows about our club and he gives a full support. For example he supported the KGRE teacher workshop held in Bengkalis in August 2002 by providing the cost incurred for the activity. A special gratitude to Vice Bupati and some members of Bengkalis local parliament who contributed 3 units of personal computers for us. They really supported our club actions and activities in increasing Human Resources in education field.

Francine and Afrizal

Celebrating Api Colok in Bengkalis

KGRE Note: Your Club seems to have a strong relationship with the Regent too. We are happy to send the magazines to his office.

Watching Bengkalis TV and Listening to KGRE on Radio Duta Suara Selapindo.

Our club members is very keen to listen and watch the ‘Bengkalis Weekly News’ every Sunday night at 7 – 7.30pm. We also listen to KGRE program on Radio Duta Suara Selapindo every Sunday at 5pm. So listening to KGRE program and watching the English news on Bengkalis Tv has become a routine activities with the club members to improve English.

Practise English with Foreigner is one of the ways to improve English. We met and conducted a conversation with dr. Francine Neago, a 65 French woman, who has been living on the island of Bengkalis for more than one year. Dr Francine Neago is an expert who trains baby Orang Utan on the island of Rupat. She was doing a project proposal on nature conservation which was called Wildlife Sanctuary of Rupat. The questions we asked here were as follows:

  • what do you think of Bengkalis?
  • how long will you stay here?
  • what are you going to do here?
  • tell us some tips and methods to learn English?
  • what food and drink do you like much?
  • do you find it hot here?
  • do you feel like at home?

KGRE Note: The club’s relationship with the French woman, Francine, sounds very interesting. Congratulations to you all for being involved in this way with the world around you. I feel that clubs and members need to invite all sorts of people into their meeting as a lot can be learnt, right.

Learning Malay Idiolect
Lily Suryani, a member of SCC Bengkalis sent her Malay idiomatic expressions on the use of ‘Degil' and 'te-king’.

Degil is used to show someone who is very naughty. For example: ‘Her teacher told her not to be late but she did not obey. She was very naughty (degil)’.

The second one is te-king. This unique idiomatic expression in Malay means that someone is very stubborn, obstinate or pig headed. ‘Don’t be so stubborn or te-king.’

Cultural Activities in Bengkalis
Api Colok or it is usually called as Lamp Festival held every year during the 27th of ‘Bulan Puasa’, just to pay homage to ancestors or leluhur based on the legend of Bengkalis people. During the week of Api Colok, many activities are done or performed such as plying explosive substances which is called mercon. Although these kinds of activities a little bit dangerous but people love to take part in it. Api Colok is designed with different kinds of architecture just like in form of statue, gate, picture and beautiful painting. Thousand of lights are lit and it can be seen from the ocean. SCC Bengkalis club members are riding motorcycles at night (see the picture below). This event can only be found on the island of Bengkalis. Many domestic and foreign tourists who visited the island took picture of Api Colok during the night and walked around the town. This big event plays a vital role in attracting tourism world.

Club of the Month for June 2004

English Lovers – Labuhan Batu, North Sumatra

Club Profile

English Lovers are one of the English Clubs who first joined KGCC in 2001. For three years this Club has shown their great commitment to be an active English club which has in return brought benefit to the Club membesr. This Club was made Club of the Month in March 2002. And because of their great enthusiasm we are happy to make them Club of the Month once again. Here are parts of their CAR:

Dear KGRE,
Here comes our CARS to let you know what we have had in the club. We have been very busy organizing many of the things related to our need for the purpose of our progress in the field of English language. We have to thank you for anything contributed to us; materials, ideas, and so on.

Writing CARs has become part of our club activity. It was not only three or four members were involved in creating this CARs but many of us did. Members were grouped. Each groups had seven persons or more. We came to a compromise that one group had to compose one paragraph for the CARs.

The other activity was delivering religious addresses or sermons on Fridays at the mosque or our school. The addresses were in English and lasted for about ten minutes and the topics were always varied. This activity is well received and highly appreciated by audience as well as bring benefit to the members for they were supposed to memorise their address before their turn come. Students at our school jokingly usually call the presenter a muslim scholar from Australia. This activity is still conducted up to now.

Listening activity is also exist at the club. Compilation of English Idioms and Mr Kevin’s talk were our topic. Mr Kevin Dalton made a short visit to the Club on 30 May 2003. And here is some of the excerpt from Kevin’s talk:

"…I’m very glad that you are members of an English club with Pak Edy. And I’m very happy that you are connected to Kang Guru Radio English. I hope that you enjoy studying English. Do you? Do you also study Arabic? Do you study bahasa Indonesia as well? So you must be very clever if you can study three languages at the same time. So good luck with your Arabic, your English and your own language. I hope that Kang Guru is helping your club a little bit…"

On Monday, 7 June 2004 we paid a visit to RSPD Rantau Prapat but it was unsuccessful. The problem seemed to be very difficult to solve because it was about payment.

KGRE note: Thank you for your efforts with RSPD Rantau. We will send sample of the radio program and talk to them too but unfortunately KGRE does not have the funds to pay radio stations to play the radio program. Radio stations usually play the program to help local students who like English. It is sort of a community service really. They are helping others in their community. Keep asking them and maybe they will change their minds.

One thing for you to know is that we now have a new activity. This activity looks nothing to do with language but to us, it is! Our new activity is playing soccer. Every Sunday afternoon we gather together on a field for football. During the event members are supposed to speak English. The idea is that it may force us to communicate in natural.

KGRE note: What a wonderful idea. Your Soccer activity is terrific and if you use English as well then it is a great way to practise both sport and language.

Club of the Month for June 2004

THE EAGLE ENGLISH MEETING CLUB
BONE, SOUTH SULAWESI

Club Profile

This Club was firstly founded by Pak Saidiman who is now the President of Buana Pura English Club in Kota Bontang – East Kalimantan. Since joining KGCC in late 2001 this Club has experienced difficulty in maintaining their members and activities. However with hard work and strong commitment from some of their member this Club is still exist until now and regularly send CAR to KGCC.

Here is some of the report and activities:

Dear Kang Guru,
First we would like to apologise because we sent our CAR report late. There are some problems of course. Most senior members have graduated from their study so they are no longer active. To anticipate this problem and since the new members are university students, we elected a new president and vice president from the new members to look after the club.

We held a meeting and discussed about regulations and methods of meetings so the members will be disciplined to attend it. We have reached an agreement that club meetings are held every Sunday at 2pm and each member has to pay contribution of Rp 2,000 a month.

In the meeting we discuss matters that are arising. Some other activities that are conducted during meetings are debate sessions, discussions and games. With the discussion activity we discuss some hot news whether it is local, national or international. We usually allocate one hour in every meeting for Kang Guru magazine and Pouch. We divided the members into two groups and we discuss the pros and cons of the theme that we choose.

Sometimes we invite foreigners or tourists, who happened to stay in Bone, to visit us at our club meetings . We also sometimes come along with them to visit some interesting places in my town like the King’s Statue of Bone, the museum, traditional houses, etc. We are happy with this activity because this usually attract people’s attention seeing us communicate in English.

We need a lot of suggestions from you especially with English meeting methods to make it better. We plan to make an English camp but we have not determined it yet. I will invite you of course and I hope you will love to come.

Travel Activity

In mid last year we had a trip to Tete Beach, one of the tourism places in Bone. We went there with some senior high school students as English Meeting Program. There were welcome speeches, self introduction for new participants, telling about the beach where participants tell things and the other ask questions. We also had puzzle games which made participants say, "The answers are simple but they make us confused too'. It was a fun day and all participants felt that this activity made them more interested in English. It was enjoyable and fun. They said, "We will try to be active in English activity so that we can understand and speak English easily".

A Note from KGRE : Thanks for this CAR. We are glad to hear that the club is continuing even though some senior members have left. Your activities sound really good and remember to look at their POUCH bulletins for more ideas on activities from other clubs. I enjoyed reading about your Beach Activity too - it is often a good idea top go some place new for a meeting as the new environment stimulates members to be more active PLUS it is fun, right? You mention that you need ideas about 'the method' of meetings. Why don't you write to other clubs and ask them what they do? For example the Pioneer Club in Makassar has a very set format for their regular Sunday morning meetings - write to them and ask them to tell you about what they do. It  is a very popular club and very well run.

Club of the Month for May 2004

IKIP Conversation Club - Tuban, East Java

Club Profile

IKIP Conversation Club in Tuban is an active English language club. Although they are busy being university students they are still able to maintain their club and do many interesting and useful activities with the club members. Two of their regular activities are discussions and excursions which are reported below. This busy club was also successful in KGRE's T-shirt GiveAway Competition (see below).

They are also active listeners of KGRE program on Radio Swara Pantura FM.

Dear KGRE,

We would like to say thank you very much for helping us. A couple of months ago we had some excursion together to visit Putri Asih Cave. It was such a beautiful cave in Tuban. We send a little story about that cave with this letter but there is no photograph.

About our next plan for the future we will sing from the same sheet of music with Mr Fathul Muin (KGRE & English interactive presenter on radio Swara Pantura FM) to develop our Club better and to get our new members from the freshmen in our campus so that all students of IKIP PGRI Tuban will know KGRE and join our club.

Discussion activities.
Two topics were done during February 2004. The first one was 'What Is A Successful Person?' The result of their discussion is that they contented that a successful person is not only for getting success for himself/herself but for all of human being too. The other topic was 'Woman, Partner or Housekeeper?". And the discussion ended with opinion that woman is a partner but also a housekeeper too. It means that as woman she has to try to be a good partner for her husband and also as a housekeeper for her family even though she is a career woman. We think the best result is a husband also has to be a good partner for his wife and look after his family.

   Excursion activities.
This Club often visit interesting places and one of them is Putri Asih Cave. Here is the report.

PUTRI ASIH CAVE
By Zulfatin Anis

Tuban is well known as 'Thousand Cave'. There area many caves spread in many district. The most popular cave are Akbar Cave in the middle of the city and Putri Asih Cave is the biggest one in Tuban. Putri Asih Cave is located in Montong area. It is about seven kilometers from Montong center or 32 kilometeres from Tuban through Merak Urak or takes one hour by car or motor cycle or two hours by public transportation. The narrow street lane to this cave is so smooth and far from traffic jam. The scenery is so beautiful and in each side of the street is surrounded by corn field. The air is so fresh as in the mountain. From the narrow street to the location is about 2 kilometres. Each sides of this street is surrounded by Jati wood. It is very shady spot.

Putri Asih cave was found by the villagers. There were Supriyadi, Slamet, Ah. Kamuji. The name of Putri Asih cave was given by Ir. Harmono, the chief of Perhutani in Parengan and now has moved to Ngawi. The width of this cave is about 2 hectare square but it could be more because the digging of this cave has not finished yet.

Approximately 500 visitor a day visit the cave and in special occasion such as Lebaran or at Christmas over 4000 people visit the cave. The cave opens between 8am until 4pm everyday and the ticket is very reasonable.

Getting through inside the cave has to pass the ladder. The ceiling of the cave is fully ornamented with 'stalactite and stalagmites' spread the entire cave ceiling and they have an excellent colours in orange and white, each of which sparkling like diamonds. Some of them has a unique shape like a curtain as if waved by the wind. Some of the visitors believe that the water from the stone can recover any disease but there is no convinced argument about it especially in medical resources. There is regulation though that women who have their period are forbidden to come into the cave.

Buana Pura English Club
Kota Bontang, East Kalimantan

Club Profile

The Buana Pura English Club in Kota Bontang was established by Pak Saidiman who was former President of the Eagle Club in Bone – South Sulawesi. The Club has 38 members and they are teachers, workers, students and children. They listen to KGRE program on RRI every week and they often do fun activities such as:

Millionaire Quiz
We have a lot of members in our club. We have to make innovative activities to increase their spirit in English. One of them was Millionaire Quiz. It was very popular in our club. All of the members were fond of it.

Firstly, we divided the participants into five groups. Each group had to prepare themselves because they could be a millionaire. We prepared good questions before. We also elected a good vocal and attractive presenter to lead the activity. He had to tell each group the rule and the prizes.

"Here is our Millionaire Quiz for this week. You can get much money – Rp 1,000,000 up to Rp 10,000,000 (high voice)", said the presenter. The groups gave applauses. They had to answer the questions before getting the money. "Prepare yourselves because the TV station, RCTI, broadcasts the activity", said the presenter again. All the participants laughed and gave applause again and again. Finally we gave ‘The Cheque" to the winner. They laughed and were happy. Actually they knew that the money was not real money. It was for fun only. The most important is that they enjoy the activity.

Choosing Topic
The students tried to choose a topic in KG magazine, then they retold it in front of other students. After he/she retold the story then the other students asked some questions. That was funny. They sometimes had to speak Indonesian because they did not know what to say in English.

Some comments from the Club members about KGRE:
"I am very glad that I can be one of the KG members. I have not enough confidence before joining KG Connection Club. KG gives me something important in my life. It is unforgettable. Today I am very confident in speaking and writing in English. KG has also given me a lot of knowledge on Australia, its school and culture, and many others. Finally I can speak well because of KG. All my friends often admire my speaking. I also tell them my KG Connection Club. I say that the connection club is the solution".
Saidiman, President

"KG is my friend. You make me good at English. I do not know what happens to me if I never join KG. You should know that I can speak English now. Many of my friends sometimes ask me why I am able to speak English. I always say that I am one of the KG connection club members, Buana Pura English Club. Viva KG!!!
Agustina, a member

"I heard information from my friend Saidiman, that he had an English Club. He said that his club was one of the KG connection. I try to attend the meeting. Fortunately now I have a good progress in English. I come into the Buana Pura English Club. I like it very much. Saidiman and KG help me speak English and know other information on Australia. That’s great KG!!"
A. Amran, member

"KG makes something new. I am a librarian. Saidiman always gives me magazine for my library. Printing media like magazines are one of the good ways to help students study English. They can know a lot of English words, Australian culture and increasing their pronunciation by reading. I hope KG can send me more magazines or other bulletins for my library for my students."

Pioneer English Meeting Conversation Club Makassar, South Sulawesi

Club Profile

You may know that Pioneer English Meeting Conversation Club (PEMCC) in Makassar is one of the active clubs in the KGCC network. They work hard to keep their club going with interesting activities that are beneficial to all members. Another interesting thing with this club is that their Club’s Headquarter is in Fort Rotterdam, a famous tourist place in Makassar. Here are some of their great activities.

  • Sunday English Meeting. Sunday meeting is our regular activity. This is the core of our activity because it is the place for us to meet and make tight our friendship relation. This meeting runs from 10 am until 1 pm. There are 10 problems in this activity. They are Welcome Speech, New Comers Introduction, KG Audio Show, Discussion, Vocabulary Building or sometimes changed with Grammar Correction Announcement, and Closing Speech.

On Vocabularly Building, the appointed committee should give some words or technical terms with its meanings that correlate with the topic of discussion on that day. It is good to introduce to the members some new words which is unknown or considered ‘strange’ in the ear of PEMCC members.

  • KG Audio Show

We keep using the August KGRE Reading Set and the audio copy of KGRE August magazine as a part of listening activity on our Sunday meeting. You know most of members are really interested in this dynamic listening practice materials. Those are very helpful in broadening our knowledge for some different type of listening practice. To tell you the truth we indeed enjoy using the materials.

  • We made 3 different folders for KG incoming and outgoing letters, magazines and The POUCH as suggested by KGRE. Every Sunday we bring them to the meeting and show and let members read. Hopefully, this is one way to make them to be more active on responding to KGRE.

  • We now make a friendship with other members of KGCC by email. We begin by contacting Medan English Club (KGCC # 50). Hopefully this is the beginning on making relation with another club that link to KG Connection Club.

  • Basic English Training

This activity is like an English course. It is for the members who need to learn English intensively. It run for 3 months (May-July) every Sunday at 9 am – 10 am, one hour before the Sunday meeting. About 25-30 members especially the English beginners are likely to join it. For 12 meetings the participants should pay Rp 15,000. It is considered cheap. The teacher is one of the PEMCC senior members.

  • TOEFL Practice

We began this activity on May 3rd, 2003 every Saturday. If this activity was successful we will make it as another regular activity.

Some of us are eager to continue their study abroad. As it needs TOEFL Score, and since it become difficult to get high score, therefore we learn and practice together in order to be familiar with the test and know some technical point in doing the test. We practice it from many different TOEFL books. We got so much improvement in our TOEFL Practice score.

  • Fund Raising Activities to support PEMCC activities
  1. Charity Box. It is a wooden box. Every Sunday we pass it in front of every members to fill (to donate some money). The amount is up to the members. Sometimes in a week, the committee got Rp 5,000 – Rp 10,000 or even more from the Charity Box.
  2. Membership Registration. Every participant who wants to be PEMCC members is charged of Rp 10,000 for administration fee. They will get a membership card and a copy of KGRE magazine.
  3. Selling Bazaar coupon. We cooperate with a café. We sell coupons to members and other people. We did this once a year.
  4. Monthly Contribution (Iuran). Many of PEMCC members are adults who already have a job for living. They do not mind to contribute Rp 1,000 each month.

Apart from those regular activities they also conducted Fresh Air Meetings. Some of the places that they have been to are Bantimurung, Losari Beach, Eremerasa – a swimming pool resort in Bantaeng and it is 250 km from Makassar.

On the last day of December 2003 they had Old n’ New activity. They spent the last day and welcomed the New Year together with all members.

Club of the Month for February  2004

Kulisusu Training English Club
 Buton, South East Sulawesi

Club Profile

Dear Kang Guru,
I am very happy to write a letter to you. By correspondence we can keep in touch each other. I can communicate with you via email as well and get many advantages. Cause of your helping I can build a new English language club in the 'off the beaten track'. My members very happy in studying English by your material. Listening the cassette very important as students to face National Final Test. In the future SMU students will get their English examination in the listening skill. Therefore we always use Kang Guru In The Classroom to listen to from the native speaker.

The other things I will tell you about our activities :

  1. Club Outing. We went to the Beach on December 25th. We held the event in a relax manner. The activities were Opening remark by MC, Welcome Speech, Self Introduction, Discussion, Entertainment, Games and Closing Speech. Many members asked some questions to the presenter about ‘what steps they must take to make their English better?’ They spoke in both English and Indonesian.
  2. Club Meeting. In every meeting I ask one of the members to introduce himself or herself in front of the class. It is to train members speaking English in front of many people. Other members give some questions related to self introduction.
  3. Learning English Song. I take the material from Kang Guru In The Classroom package. We write the song, played the cassette and then we sing together.
  4. Song Quiz. I recorded some songs from different countries i.e. Indonesian, English, Indian. Basically members like listening to the music. At the end of the meeting we did song quiz. I divided members into three groups then I played the cassette and each team must guess the song. What’s the title of the song? Who is the singer? Where is it from? All members very happy. The winner was the group who has high score. And they got prizes.
  5. Translating from English to Indonesian. We did it as group activity. We translate a text from Kang Guru magazine. After that one member of the group come forward to read their translation. We discussed it and compare the translation.

I showed your package to SLTP Teachers and they were interested to join the Kang Guru program. Now if they meet me they always speak English. Members have a good chance to practise and help others in English in a relax manner.

POUCH bulletin is valuable for an English language club. We read the other club activities and sometimes we imitate their way. Reading Club of the Month activity can arouse some inspirations to create an attractive activity. So members of the club never felt bored. For making my members interested and stay longer in the club I usually hold English competition. The participants who has good English capability will get Kang Guru stickers.

Club members get motivation after we get your letter, package of Kang Guru being member of KGCC and plan to visit the other English course. Now they are very active and happy to follow the English lesson in the club.

Thank you very much Kang Guru. I realize without you I cannot speak English, write English letter, or make a new English club. Cause of your helping I can do something related to English and going smoothly. To conclude my letter I express your gold proverb ‘Good Neighbours Make Good Friends’ and ‘Good Friends Make Good Partner’.

Club of the Month for March 2004

Medan English Society – Medan, North Sumatra

Club Profile

The Medan English Society is undoubtedly a very active and dynamic English Club. There are several English Clubs in Medan that are in the KGCC network and yet Medan English Club is the only Club who never fails to communicate with KGRE. Emails and Club reports regularly arrived at KGRE office. And their reports are always interesting to read. It seems to us that this Club is well-managed and that all of the members are very committed to run this Club successfully. This is confirmed on the brief summary of the club:

MEDAN ENGLISH SOCIETY (MES) is one of the Kang Guru Connection Clubs which is based in Medan. The motto of the Club is ‘Fun, Fresh & Smart’. MES provides such a Conducive atmosphere for those who want to practice their English become much better. MES has been joining Kang Guru Radio English more than two years. KGRE is the network that is made up of over 50 active English Clubs from many different parts of Indonesia. Each of Kang Guru Connection Clubs has its own activities done at their base. MES welcomes those who are really interested in improving their English language skills to join our Club activities. Good job guys.

So KGRE is happy to once again make this Club as Club of the Month. The following are some of the activities that the Club has done and has been doing.

Show What You Meant
We are happy to tell you about our club activities during this festive season. Soon after we received the KGRE package we organized a competition among our members on Saturdays. We invited them all to tell a story about their unforgettable experience. They really enjoyed the activities because it’s really fun and cool bananas. For those who got a chance to be a story teller they were also evaluated by other members who acted as evaluators. If they did not know what to say, we already prepared special stories for them. The stories taken from our own club story – ‘MY SCHOOL’ which won the Runner Up position from KGRE Writing Competition 2003 (KGRE Note: The story is on KGRE website for people to read), and from other resources like DPDF and Internet. We believe that the system run at our club meetings could be one of the interesting activities for other KGCCs. We need your help to give us comments on this system.

Parroting (social activities)
We invited six children in our neighbourhood to follow a short training program for English conversation. We did it in such a way that they really enjoyed the materials given with lots of interesting pattern used in English conversation. This program lasted for two months. We plan to organise the same program like this in the future and of course with more participants from them. Most children in our neighbourhood know nothing abou English. They just get the English lesson from their school. Most of them said it is very expensive to take an English course. They also told us they often get bored of listening their teachers at school. We found out the teachers keep teaching grammar. Even the teachers themselves are confused as well since they do not know what to do with them. So we made up our mind to work on a simple project called ‘English Special For Street Children’. There are two steps done to finish this project. First, we chose four of our members to jot down every single Indonesian spoken language used among children. We found out they keep repeating the same sentences everyday. Then we matched it with English sentences that we have already recorded from movies and cartoons. They are as follows:

English Indonesian

What do you take me for here?      Kau anggap apa aku disini?
You got to treat me                        Kau harus traktir aku
Where’s my part?                          Mana punyaku?
Who do you go with?                     Pergi sama siapa?

The problems are they often forgot what they just got very easily. Gosh! They keep insisting us to play some games. We were really stuck because ideas are expensive and it’s not that easy to find the new ones. At last we made our mind to make a small competition among them. Still we need some ideas to make this activity more interesting and enjoyable. Help please!

Note from KGRE:
Your ‘Parroting’ activity sounds absolutely wonderful and I think that they children in your project are very lucky. To help them to remember you need to give lots of consolidation activities and games – otherwise they will forget. Matching activities, guessing games and little dance type activities may help them to recall the words. You also say that ideas are expensive? Ideas are not expensive – they are free HOWEVER putting them into practice is more difficult. How about thinking of ‘cheaper’ ideas?

Telling Story Competition
We also plan to make a competition which involves ex participants of KGRE workshop in Medan last year and also high school students. The competition is called ‘Telling Story Competition’. They will give their speech about their unforgettable experience in learning English. It’s nearly the same with KG competition last time – ‘Describe The Best Thing About Your School’. First they have to write down their story not more than 300 words and they got to tell it in front of the audience. What do you think? We hope this competition will take place in one of high schools in Medan. Special for the prizes we also plan to give them a certificate signed by our club and special from KGRE. The certificate will be prepared in Medan. We hope there will be a green light from you.

KGRE note:
We are happy to provide prizes and we are waiting for your details of events, times, etc.
