Club of the Month January 2005
Madura Diamond English Club (MaDia Club)
Madura, East Java

This MaDia Club in Madura joined KGCC in April 2004.
Upon joining the KGCC membership they wrote to KGRE.
Club Profile

"Actually we don’t know what kind of reply to give you. You are very kind, care and motivating on our educational development particularly dealing with improving our English quality. Frankly speaking, your explanation and special attention on our club directly makes us to hear an Indonesian idiom where most Indonesian always say – ‘Dikasih pipi minta ke hati’. Therefore your very valuable support to us would be a wide chance to whisper our heart vibration in order that you will catch what our club wish in the future".

Regular activities amongst the club members are internal reinforcement on language building. Thus conversation and writing skill are intended to be our good basic capacity to which a combination of language terms namely ‘Language Performance and Language Competence’ could be implemented integrally.

The Club also carried out English camp program that would be focused on language applications as daily interaction. And here is the report on their ‘one day adventure to some local interesting places in Madura island.

"The journey was solely intended for increasing members’ enthusiasm on English conversation as well as to celebrate National Independence Day.

Before departing we made an agreement that ‘no serving, no talking and no joining us but in English’. Therefore we will ignore those who spoke other than English. This made us burst into laughter along the journey because there were always funny attitudes from members in expressing their English. The most important thing is we must talk in English to whatever we mean.

The first place that we visited were Panaongan Beach located in Pasongsongan village of Sumenep regency. Arriving there we saw the stretch of mountainous sand along the shore under which a villager recently has found several old graves. The wind blowed softly against our skin and hair. On the way before the beach we bought some fresh fish at Pasean market. So then we started to do ‘ikan bakar’. Some members collected dried wood to make fire and some others washing the fishes in the knee-high seawaters. The interesting thing was that everyone speaking English during the time. Various voices just flew out of our own mouth such as singing, spontaneous poem, expressing individual feeling and some just laze around on a high stone of the sea bank staring at the purple colour of the sea.

At three o’clock we moved to second place namely La’pala’ cave. It’s exactly on the slope of a hill in a valley – Tagangser Daya village – Waru, Pamekasan regency. To get to the cave we have to pass a half of a kilo meter walk and had to go down stony steep slope downward. As a result, little scream and shout sometimes blow out of members particularly girls. Something unique about this place is the roof of the cave has many stones of for about two meters tall. One of which is in he shape of man’s penis overhanging. That’s why it’s then called La’pala’ which derives from Madura language ‘Pala’ means something of the man’s. While the opposite cave is called Bini cave means woman. At the base of the hill between the two caves a river and waterfall with clear water slowly flow among the green trees juxtaposing at each riverbank. Forty five minutes we spent there before finally leaving the cave."

Future Activities:
MaDia recently has conducted several meetings to discuss some future activities. The meetings has produced several kinds of activities to do once every week. They are:

  • Formal activities: Correspondence, writing method, writing letter, linguistic study.
  • Informal activities: Watching English movie to retell, English game, traveling study, comparative study

A Question for KGRE
Why don’t you carry out a meeting that will involve directly all KGCC boards? So that they can communicate with you not only through magazine but also direct interaction among them and it certainly makes our unity on KGCC become closer as your saying "Good Neighbours Make Good Friends" could be actualized in reality.

Response from KGRE:
We have been invited to visit Madura in early April by the Pioneer English Club in Sumenep to conduct teacher workshop and club meetings. We will certainly invite your club members to attend the Language Forum we have planned for Friday the 1st of April, 2005.

Later this year the Connection Clubs in Makassar are planning to hold their second KGRE Connection Club Get Together. Their first one was a great success back in 2002. Clubs need to initiate these types of meetings and then KGRE will support the activity by attending and helping with arrangements.

Club of the Month for April 2005
Benteng Panynyua English Club
Makassar, South Sulawesi

Short History of the Club
Benteng Panynyua English Club (BPEC) is one of the English Conversation Club in Makassar which was established on April 7th, 1986. It is a social institution which always conducts its weekly meeting as internal program. It is located at Fort Rotterdam, one of the tourism objects which we can see from the historical value of the place. BPEC itself has been recorded in the Guidance Book of Tourists who ever came there. BPEC welcomes participants from all levels of society; they are students from elementary school, secondary school, senior high school, college, employees etc. It has been eighteen years since the existence of BPEC and it really helps the people especially English learners to build up their speaking ability. Even most of them succeed in finding good position at many companies in South Sulawesi and outside South Sulawesi.

KGRE Notes: Pak Syahrir Badulu, the advisor of Best Forum English club and also presenter of KGRE English Interactive Program was also member of the PEC when he was a university student.

Club Activities:

1. Weekly Meeting
It is held every Sunday from 10am until 2pm at Fort Rotterdam. There are several activities that make all the participants interested and enjoy the meeting. Activities included: Welcome Speech, Wow … New Face, Warming up, Opinion and debating (discussion), Entertainment (sing a song, games, telling story, reading a poem), Building vocabulary, Announcement, Closing speech.

Since the club joined the KGCC, we make additional activity that is listening to KGRE Reading Class Set. This makes participants become more motivated and have fun in learning English.

2. Out Door Meeting
Out door meeting is a little bit the same as the weekly meeting but at different place. Out door meeting is conducted in one place which is far away from Makassar. On October 2 and 3, 2004 we conducted a ‘sun rise till sun rise through BPEC’ at Lembanna, Malino village town (Gowa regency). We wanted to do several programs in the evening but because the participants were frozen we could only do ‘telling the truth’ program. Each member had to talk frankly about many things about this club. We talked about problems we face and how to solve it. After that some members directly went to sleep while the others stay up and played ‘scrabble’ and ‘fortune teller using cards’. The next day we did what we call ‘finding the trial’. This activity is about the same as ‘hiking’. We divided the participants into two groups. We started from the waterfall and ended at the base camp. We climbed up and climbed down of the hill and through the valley of Bawakaraeng mount. That is why the place is called ‘lembanna’ which in Bahasa Indonesia means ‘lembah’ or valley in English.

Other excellent programs that have been held by the club are :

‘English Speech Contest’ which was held on May 17th, 2004. The competition was for junior and high school students at Gowa Regency.

‘English Debate Contest 2004 (EDC 2004) which was held on August 7th - 8th, 2004 and competed for Head of PKK South Sulawesi Province Trophy. EDC 04 presented for high school category and college students and English club category. This debate followed by all schools and colleges/English clubs from all over South Sulawesi. This contest used Australian Parliamentary System Adjudicators, consists of lecturers, instructors, teachers, and professional ones. One of the adjudicators was Mr Syahrir Badulu. This competition was also sponsored by PT. PLN and PT. Telkomsel.

Club of the Month, June 2005
Al YA’Lu English  Club
Malang, East Java

Al Ya’lu English Club is actually more like a formal institution where club members are kindergarten teachers. Being one of the best schools for young children in East Java it is often visited by kindergarten teachers from all over Indonesia for comparative study as well as guests from overseas. Administration has encouraged the staff members to form an English club and join Kang Guru Connection Club network.

And they’ve proven to be an active club  inviting KGRE to participate in their workshop on teaching English to  young learners early February this year. KGRE presented ‘How To Make Classroom Interesting and Productive’.

Here are some of their interesting activities:

Al Ya’lu Teachers’ Club Meeting
There were thirty two participants in the teachers’ club meeting. Firstly Mrs. Nada opened the meeting. In this opening session, Mrs Nada informed the participants that we had a native speaker guest, Mr. Path, an Australian English teacher in Al-Ma’arif Junior High School.

Next, Mariana Ulfa did some teaching. She taught speaking to eight students - all AEC Students’ Club members. Lastly the teachers gave comments on Ulfa’s performance. There were some good ideas on how to make the teaching method better. The last comments came from Mr Path. It is continued by an interesting discussion on speaking teaching.

 Al Ya’lu Students’ Club Meeting
The students’ club meeting was on Saturday, April 23rd, 2005. There were 12 children at the meeting. They were being guided by three AEC teachers - Any Fatati, Husna and Indah. Firstly the teachers asked the students to make big circle. In this session we sang two songs and the students enjoyed them. And then we had a ball game. In this game one of the teachers thrown a ball to a student and the student who received the ball must say what colours they were wearing. Next we asked them to sit on the grass.

The teachers, in turns asked some questions. Whoever answered at first, he or she would get the score. At last we divided them in a mirror game. First  we divided them into pairs and stand face to face. One would act as if he or she was in front of a mirror making his or her face up. Another one pretended to be the mirror. He or she must follow the way his or her partner acted. The students enjoyed the meeting and were very active. After all of activities done, Any Fatati closed the meeting.
