Clubs of the Month for December, 2006
Get Me English Community (KGCC #071)
and
University Student English Forum USEF (KGCC #060)
This month two clubs share the title of Club of the Month as they work so well together and are very active in promoting English language in Jember East Java. Get Me English Community (KGCC #071) and University Student English Forum (USEF – KGCC #060) recently organized a successful teacher’s workshop at Jember University and a fantastic club Get Together at Papuma Beach.
Umi from the Get Me English Community recently wrote in a Club Activity Report:
Regular club activities:
- Monthly club meeting is always opened by the activity of listening to the KGRE material and continue to discuss the Pouch and do the club activity. Question and answer about the difficult thing the members found out to be solved together. This is the best part. Sharing each member experiences. Taking and getting some information to improve the English of each member.
- Our club has a brand new activity. Some of the members have the same hobby, that is correspondence with pen pals. Therefore, we now have a session in the meeting where we are talking about it.
Recent activities:
- Responding to the Pouch for April-June 2006 our club has already read and discussed the language activity in a remarkable meeting. The result of the meeting has already sent to KGRE recently that’s some pictures of unusual transportation in our neighbourhood.
Future plan activities:
- We plan to raise more funds for the club by guiding some tourists to have a day city tour in Jember and visiting some tourist attractions around the regency. We think there are so many interesting places, beaches as well as mountains for tourists to stop by and enjoy on the way from Surabaya to Bali.
Bambang from USEF sent the following information in a recent Club Activity Report:
In the first meeting of USEF organizers (2006/07) we planned to hold USEF recruitment in October 2006, and we did. In the middle of September, we had a meeting to decide the USEFers who would organize that recruitment, and Dekalisa was chosen as the project officer in this annual program. Under her leadership and team work, we held 7th USEF recruitment on October 8th 2006. It was held with the theme ‘Breathe the New Wave of Quality’ and took place in the university students’ activities centre.
There were explanations about USEF as an English forum, explanation about USEF as an organization, debate introduction, English game and interview in English It began at 9.00am and ended at 3.30pm.Thge day after, we held our first daily activities with the new members. It was Monday and we held debate training.
Both clubs worked together to plan and run the KGRE Teacher Workshop in Jember
plus a Get Together at the Beach - December 2006
Club of the Month October 2006
Sky English Club #033 - Gianjur in West Java
Talking about our activities, besides our regular meeting we visited an English course located at the centre of town. Before we visited we prepared some questions related to the history and management of his course. Amazingly, the leader of this course welcomed us warmly. He explained how he runs his course.
We really enjoyed the chat, sharing our ideas and our experiences with each other. He also showed us many pictures describing the learning and teaching process of his course. In other words, that day was very groovy. From that moment we decide to make it part of our regular program: ‘Sky Goes for a Walk’. In future we plan to visit a senior English teacher who has outstanding ability.
Let us tell you about the experience of one of our club members, Asep. He’s a teacher at one senior high school. He tried using a Listening and Reading Class Set in his school and the response of his students was good. Beside that the students found that their teacher reads the English text differently to what they heard on the cassette. Good facilities make good students.

Club of the Month for August 2006
English Society Club KGCC #010 - Semarang, Central Java
The English Society Club joined the KGCC network in April 2004. They hold their meetings at RRI Semarang and have an interactive English language show on that station. The club members are from different backgrounds. Some of them work as sales assistants or teachers while others have small businesses at home, or are students, or graduates looking for work.
This club has a very active social work program. Sometimes this involves visiting a local orphanage where the club members teach the children English through fun activities such as songs and games.
However, after the May earthquake the club went to the Jogjakarta area to help with the cleanup. They worked alongside other volunteers from Wahid Hasyim University and Pondok Pesantren Sunan Kalijaga. They spent time in Sleman and then in Klaten, helping the local people in many ways. They divided themselves into four teams: the reconstruction team, the medical team, the psychological team and the happy team. They also did live radio reports from the site for the interactive English program on RRI Pro 2 FM Semarang and helped with fund raising.
Here’s what Keyko from the English Society Club wrote to KGRE:
‘Through this disaster we would like to say our gratitude to all the victims of Central Java earthquake since they have taught us how to be grateful, accept the condition whether it is good or bad and how to handle it. Here, we also learn how to share with others as although all the survivors were in such a terrible condition, still they share food with another place which was in worse condition and out of reach from the government’s help and also for us. Even though they were in difficult moment they still have time to think of others. What a wise people.’
Thanks to the English Society Club for your hard work. Kang Guru is very happy to support you in your activities.
Club of the Month for September 2006
Pioneer English Club KGCC #019 – Sumenep, Madura |
 |
 |
The Pioneer English Club joined the KGCC network in August 2001. The club has been very active in promoting English language in Madura, both in Pondok Pesantren Al-Amien where it is located, and also in the surrounding area. The club’s current leader, Suryadi, is very proactive in creating opportunities for both his club and others. KGRE wishes to acknowledge this contribution as thanks to the hard work of the Pioneer English Club, other clubs in Madura are benefiting a great deal too. |
In August, Suryadi and his committee organized a very successful KGRE teacher workshop and club Get Together (GTG) in Pamekasan. Suryadi sent us the following report about the second day of the program.
‘The more exciting day was on the following day (Friday August 4 th) when we had ‘KGCC Get Together’ for Kang Guru Connection Club members in Madura: Pioneer English Club, Edelweiss English Club, Al-Ghazali English Club, English Club of Pamekasan Youth, Dreaming Dawn English Club and Nasyrul Ulum English Club. This Kang Guru Connection Clubs’ meeting is to increase our quality through language activities provided by Kang Guru Radio English, learning English in fun with KGCC members which offered language activities that allow KGCC members to maximize their potential and English proficiency.
The participants were so happy to meet Mr Kevin Dalton and Mrs Cheryl Reid. Mr John and Mrs Margaret Rollings also attended with their Edelweiss English Club. They were truly active and helpful. That was the time we can share our experience in learning English and club’s activities. Happiness radiates from KGCCers faces when they had some games/quizzes and members’ performance/presentation.
They became more excited when Kevin and Cheryl taught them ‘G’Day G’Day’ song and gave away KGRE package for every participant. Thanks KGRE, the participants don’t go home empty handed! More over, they discovered fresh challenges and new experiences in learning English. They look very enthusiastic and energetic joining the Kang Guru Radio English Get Together 2006, they got many door prizes, and this is the important one, they are more motivated in learning English than before.’
Thanks Suryadi and the Pioneer English Club for all of their efforts to promote English language learning in Madura. KGRE is very happy to support you in your activities.
Club of the Month for July 2006
Excellent English Conversation Club – Mamuju, West Sulawesi
This Club in Mamuju joined the Kang Guru Connection Club in July 2004. Although facing difficulies this club has tried hard to keep the club going. Some members of the Club had the opportunity to participate in the Clubs Get Together in Makassar in August last year. They met with members of several active English Clubs in Makassar and KGRE Team.
Here are their report on their recent activities.
Actually our club is usually active in some of English activities, and we wish to tell other clubs about our activities. Unfortunately there is no internet service in our town and it is the biggest problem that we have. We realize that we are behind others in use of information technology but this doesn’t discourage us. In club meetings we sometimes invited some government official in the area to discuss about internet facilities. We have been told that the internet service will be available in Mamuju in 2007. We really hope so.
|
In July 2004 we held our 'One Night
Study English with EECC'
|
|
|
Besides having regular English meetings every Sunday, we also organized some events such as
on 4 th December when there was “Special EECC English Meeting with a native speaker, Mr. Lonnie from the USA, a tourist that stayed in Mamuju for 2 weeks. Recently (April 2006) we visited some of the senior high school in Mamuju. We may report that our English Traveling Program gave knowledge to many students especially in English Speaking Classes. We know from the first time we entered their classrooms that several of them feel afraid because we used English, but when we introduced some souvenirs that Ogi had sent us, suddenly the classroom was alive. Thanks once again to Ogi for her willingness to help our club.
- SMA NEGERI 1. BUDONG-BUDONG, ABOUT 98 KM from West Mamuju.
- SMA NEGERI PANGALE about 60 KM from Mamuju
- SMA NEGERI 1 KALUKKU about 40 KM from Mamuju and some SMA schools in Mamuju City.
And the most important thing that I want to report that in Mamuju, on 3 rd of this July will have an Exhibition to celebrate “Hari Jadi Mamuju yang Ke-465” Named “Pameran Pembangunan dan Pertunjukan Rakyat” and this Exhibition is great day for Mamuju people and many cultures art (Pentas Seni Budaya) will be performed.
We have discussed with Mr.Darmin ( Manajer YPA-Handayani) to make some programs. One of them is an English Speech Competition for Yunior and Senior High School, English Debating, English Quizzes and some else. So we really need Kang Guru support to send us some souvenirs.
That is our Club Report and I’m looking forward to regular magazine in the next edition.
Club of the Month for June 2006
AUSTRALIA English Club - Malang, East Java
Australia English Club (KGCC#009) joined Kang Guru Connection Club network in June 2005. The club has three missions:
- creating new atmosphere of learning English beyond classroom,
- learners centric not teachers centric and
- edutainment (combining education and entertainment).
Under the leadership of Pak Witanto the club is managed to carry out the mission through the club activities such as speaking activity, telling story, describing picture, mini drama, monopoly English game.
On Saturday, 18 February 2006 Capt. KGRE, Mr Kevin Dalton, visited the club and he saw how the club members did their monopoly game. It was fantastic and they even made the board game out of selection of KGRE magazines.
 |
Here is the report from the Club about that meeting and activities.
On February 18, 2006 exactly in ‘Public Library’ or Perpustakaan Umum Malang LPMBK English Club was meeting with KGRE, especially with Mr Kevin Dalton. The meeting began at about 9am. We made many games and at the opening of this meeting some of our member sang songs. Then we started to play the first game that was ‘Whispering Game’. Our club had to be divided into six groups and every leader of the group had to listen to the sentences which Mr Dalton said. |
Then each leader had to whisper that sentence to their members consecutively. Four winners of the game then given chance to play the next game which was ‘Monopoly Game’. Other participants joined in to give support. The monopoly games was about ‘describing pictures’ from colourful monopoly board. |
|
|
This game is very enjoyable and fun. Everyone could practice to speak English. This was our chance to speak to foreign people directly. Mr Dalton then did his own game and handout KGRE prizes to winners of all the games. All of us were very pleased. That was our first experience which was unforgettable. Thank you KGRE and also to Mr Dalton for visiting and all your prizes. We are waiting for your second visit. |
Club of the Month for May 2006
DEL ENGLISH CLUB – TOBA SAMOSIR, NORTH SUMATRA
A Short History of the Club
Before Del English Club (DEC) existed, we had an English activity called 'English Day' organized by students involved in Education Section, one of the sections of Student Organization in our school. On that day students had to speak in English all day (we chose Wednesday and Friday). Unluckily, the students got difficulty to do it and chose not to speak at all and sometimes they spoke in Indonesian. Then it stopped.
Long after the English Day didn’t work anymore, our English lecturers cooperated with students established an English Club called Del English Club. It was established on the 14th ofSeptember 2005. It’s named so by the name of our school in which we are studying now: Del Polytechnic of Informatics, located on Jl.Sisingamangaraja, Sitoluama - Laguboti, North Sumatera. – http://www.del.ac.id
It’s firstly established by considering that English is now undeniably very important. Farther it’s urgent for our lecturers here usually teach in English, and we have a great number of English text books to read. |

EDELWEISS ENGLISH CLUB
GULUK-GULUK, MADURA, EAST JAVA
Edelweiss English Club was established in August last year and with great support from their English teacher, Ibu Iffah Al-Batul, and from Margaret Rollings, an ISELP teacher, this club continue to being active and doing many interesting activities. The letter (see below) sent in by their English teacher showed how much they appreciate and enjoy the benefit of joining Kang Guru Connection Club network.
What a big surprise as like dream comes true that come to me. I really appreciate your parcel and best support to me and all of my students. Thank you very much. It’s such the most beautiful thing they ever had when I call all the Kang Guru magazine receiver’s names. While screaming, they got close to me and listened to your letter together carefully. They went and tell to another friends.
I myself have very enjoyed the KGRE magazine and Reading Class Set. The most wonderful thing I’ve got is the cassette. I can learn much about ‘pronunciation’ of native speaker and not Indonesian English or moreover Maduranese English which I think is the most difficult part of English language by using both cassette and magazine. By using RCS I can learn varieties of methodology of English that I use in classroom especially in difficult topic of lesson like in class XII and XIII. I can learn more about latest information about everythings. The very beautiful song that I nearly learn by heart, cross-culture experiences.
Once again, my best gratitude goes to you. Thanks for support me, for encouraging my students.
Iffah Al-Batul
