News from Clubs

In February a special event for language learners was organized by Pioneer English Club (KGCC #019) and PP Al-Amien in Madura. The Festival of Three Languages (Semarak Tiga Bahasa) was a great success. There were language contests in English, Indonesian and Arabic for 1027 participants. Other activities included an exhibition night, expo, performances and discussions.

Get Me English Community (KGCC #071) in Jember sent a representative. Of course other KGCCs in Madura were there too: Nurulhuda English Club (KGCC #065), Edelweiss English Club (KGCC #005), Nurul Ulum English Club (KGCC #086) and Al-Ghazali English Club (KGCC #056). Congratulations to Pioneer English Club for your hard work.

KGRE Visits to Clubs

KGRE visited clubs in Java, Sulawesi and Lombok. Kevin, Sue and Cheryl brought back stories about active clubs and energetic club leaders and members.

Kevin’s visit was to a special event at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), home of Student English Activity UMY (KGCC #032). Members of this club and English Society Club (KGCC #010) from Semarang organized a cultural day, with students and other guests from Slovakia, the Philippines, South Africa, Bangladesh and Australia. It was very successful and a good example of language clubs working together. Congratulations to the members of both clubs.
Sue visited MAKES (KGCC #049) in Makassar and was asked many questions about scholarships. You can see a story about her visit on page 10 of the March magazine, and an article about Australian Development Scholarships.

Cheryl and Sue visited the Gazebo English Club (KGCC #007) in Trenggalek when they were in town for a teachers’ workshop. They were guests on an English language radio program at Radio ADS and the next day Cheryl attended a club meeting. Members of the club provided some very good entertainment and participated well in the KGRE activities.
Cheryl then visited Tuban where she met members of the Five Conversation Club (KGCC #006) and IKIP Conversation Club (KGCC #074). During the afternoon there was a blackout so the meeting was held without lights or microphones. However, the club members were very enthusiastic and made good use of the chance to use their English despite the problems.

Recently Cheryl also visited Lombok and caught up with all of the KGCCs on the island. Thank you to English Speaking Club (KGCC #004), SMANDA English Club (KGCC #078), Alfa English Club (KGCC #013), Mataram English Club (KGCC #063) and Sasak English Club (KGCC #023) for organizing such interesting and enjoyable meetings. The clubs on Lombok are very motivated and trying to use every opportunity to use and improve their English.
