The First KG Connection Club Get Together In Makassar
The first KGCC English Club Get Together was held in South Sulawesi.
It took place on June 23, 2002 in Makassar, the capital city of South
Sulawesi. It was held in the auditorium of RRI Makassar. There were about 250
participants, all active club members from 6 clubs of the Kang Guru Connection
network in South Sulawesi.
The day started early. Organising committee members were busy again making sure that everything was in place and working. After a hectic registration the event finally started at 9.30 am. Two members of Best Forum English Club came up first with an introduction about Kang Guru Connection Clubs. They did it in such a fine way, really professional! This was followed by a welcome speech from Pak Syahrir and Pak Mukidi, Head of RRI Makassar. Kevin summed up the opening ceremony by thanking the Organising Committee for their hard work. He thanked RRI for their continuing support of KGRE and that he hoped RRI Makassar would soon conduct a KGRE Interactive Show. He also thanked the sponsor, Miami Ice Cream. Most importantly he thanked the hundreds of participants from all over South Sulawesi who were there. It's obvious that the event could not be successful without such keen participants and KGRE was grateful for that.
Fun
activities followed making all participants actually get together and mingle.
During this activity participants were asked to talk to others, introduce themselves
and make new friends. Eagerly and noisily participants followed Kevin's instructions.
It was a great, fun way to interact with others and meet new people at the same
time.
A Language Quiz activity was next. People were frantic at first and kept thinking about the earlier questions while they had to listen and answer new questions. After door prizes from KGRE, it was time for mini presentations from Clubs. PEMCC was first on stage with a drama about becak driver's life. It brought lots of laughter while the audience happily ate cups of yummy ice cream distributed to them for free from Miami Ice Cream. There was a poem reading from ETWG Club and then followed by 'Total Football' comedy from IPPM - Pangkep. It was a really entertaining performance for all of us.
Pak Hubert, a guest speaker from IAPSD - Makassar Tourism Training Project
gave a short presentation about his AusAID funded project. He also gave
some useful advise on learning English as he is not native speaker himself.
Many people asked him questions even after he finished his presentation. Another
guest speaker, Pak
Sartono
from the ACCESS project, came next with his information about this community
development project in South Sulawesi.
After a quick lunch, the audience was once again entertained with a presentation
from another two clubs.
Makes Al-Markaz is working with street children so some of those kids presented
a lively dancing performance. Lots of hands clapped for them. This was followed
by a comedy from Best Forum English Club and a special performance from Pak
Syahrir Badulu with his 'pertunjukkan sulap'.
A Music Quiz from Kevin was next. It was interesting to see how keen the
participants to answers all questions. There was lots of discussion among group
members. Then more door prizes from the sponsor and even more from
Kang
Guru. There were many anxious faces, with tickets ready, and lots of cheers
from the participants, especially when friends from their Club won prizes. The
winners of Language Quiz and Music Quiz were announced and that really made
people go mad with excitement.
The big day was about to end. Kevin thanked Organising Committee members and invited them to the stage. He presented them with a KGRE T-shirt and Certificate. Presidents and Chairmans of all participating clubs were presented with a special package from Kang Guru which is to be used for their club activities. Lots of pictures were taken to conclude the day. The Club Get Together proved to be great fun and a great way to maintain friendships, make new friends as well as learning English. We look forward to more Club Get Together in different areas. So, be ready KG fans!
