twenty people attended and it was great to meet them and talk about many different
topics. We spoke of the KGCC network, their Club activities, the politics of Indonesia,
education in Yogya and so on. It was often a very lively discussion indeed. James,
an Australian student studying Bahasa Indonesia at Gadjah Mada accompanied members
of the Dolphin Club and we all found it very interesting to hear his story. The
Dolphin Club are lucky to actually have a native speaker ‘member’ of their Club
- a good idea, don’t you agree? The Discussion Club was represented by Tore who
is trying very hard to attract new members as there are only 5 at the moment.
Like many Clubs, he has found that last year’s members have moved on and very
few ‘original’ members remain. Discussions centered around how to increase Club
membership and all those present were keen to hear the ideas that we all had.
A further problem is that many students are not due to return to Yogyakarta around
January 21st to resume their studies for 2002.
The Friends English Club also spoke of their recent Ramadhan Mall activity - read about it yourselves from their email sent to KGRE on December 4th, 2001. Great idea, eh?
As
you know that we have Ramadhan month now and there is a tradition in our region
to have “breaking fasting together” (buka puasa bersama). This event is attended
by the old, the young and also children. So we find this is a good moment to
start our program introducing English to the children (they have a full month
holiday). We taught them with making games and singing. At first we split them
into two groups for pre-school and school students, teaching them some names
of things they see around. They learnt easy English songs like “London Bridge”
and then we gathered them together to make a circle and sing. We ran this action
for just five days and the children really enjoy it. Hey, we are going to send
you the pics, but please don’t get surprised as we do not have any big banner
yet (unlike the other clubs) so we just made “a poor banner” made with some
papers.

That IS great news Space Club. I hope that you support Mr. Bambang by listening and telephoning his show.
This year we are actively encouraging KGRE radio stations, including RRI of course, to also have interactive program in English in conjunction with the regular KGRE programs. Perhaps you can help us by contacting your local RRI station and talking to them about it and be sure to emphasize that you will support them in any way they may feel is helpful. With your encouragement and support we may soon have an interactive KGRE show in your area.
