CLUB CORNER - Sharing Ideas and Activities

Fund Raising Activities To Support Club Activities
PEMCC - KGCC # 021

We have a ‘charity box’. It is made of wood. Every Sunday we pass it around the members. They should fill the box by putting money in it. It is all up to them how much money they want to donate. Sometimes in a week, the committee got five until ten thousands rupiah or even more from the charity box.
Membership registration. Every participant that wants to be PEMCC members is charged ten thousand rupiah for administration fee. They will get a membership card and a copy of KGRE magazine.
Sell Bazaar coupon. We cooperate with a café. We sell coupons to members and other participants. We did this once in a year. This activity is also good for strengthening our friendships and relationships.
Monthly Contribution (iuran). Many of PEMCC members are adults who already got a job for living. They do not mind to contribute one thousand rupiah each month.
Note from KGRE: These sound like good ways of collecting money. At KGRE we would also like to know how the money is used to benefit the club and club members. What is the money used for?

Inviting New Members to the Club
Medan English Society - KGCC # 050

Last September we carried out ‘Happy Saturday - Who Am I’ program. We invited two classes from the English Diploma Program of Universitas Sumatra Utara to have a Get Together with us. Around 60 students attended and we divided them into six groups. Each group had to make a jingle of their own and then had to perform in front of the other members. We named their groups with a funny names such as Cheeky-Chummy, Chubby Cheeks, Dimple, Jack-of-all Trades, Smarty pants and Cook-a-Doodle Do. After that we invited some volunteers from each group to come forward. Each had to face backwards so that they could not see the other members. Then we put a cartoon on their back with names of famous people like Inul, Leonardo De Caprio, Ucok Baba, etc. Then they got to listen to their friends’ explanations and got to guess who the person is. The philosophy of this game is togetherness. We meant to show them that the sense of belonging among students at USU is very important. It helps toMedan Englsih Society build a good network and get a job soon. After the activity we invited them to be our club members. Almost half of them have registered. We think this is one of the effective ways to invite more people to join our club meetings.

SUGGESTIONS for MAINTAINING CLUBS

Suryantinah, President of YPRU English Club, wrote to KGRE:

“Dear Mr Kevin, I will explain something to you. I was chosen as President of the Club but I feel I am not ready because my ability in English is low I think. Many members are better than me. I never join an English course because I’m not from the rich. I cannot speak English well and I cannot communicate well with people. I think I’m not suitable with this job. In our club there is no instructor who guide us. My Headmaster doesn’t care with our club. Mr Kevin, please help me. Give me some advice. I’m very dizzy now. I feel down ...”

KGRE response: In your letter Suryantinah you say that you are worried because the club doesn’t have an instructor. Maybe you don’t really need one? All of the members need to work together to plan activities and to enjoy yourselves. As far as I am concerned English Clubs are not English language courses or classrooms - they are meetings where people have fun with English. Maybe you do have a leader but that doesn’t mean that person has to organise everything for the members. It should be a joint effort from all members. If members are not willing to work together and help the club to grow and develop then maybe they shouldn’t be in the club. Remember - clubs are for fun and for enjoying language activities but not fnecessarily like you do at school. Sit down with the members and ask them a few simple questions :
1. Why are you a member of this club? (to improve their English)
2. Are you willing to help the club to grow and develop? (yes)
3. Do you want the Club to be the same as an English course? (no)
4. Will you all help me to plan, develop and run club activities? (of course we will)
