Language Activity for January - March 2006

Congratulations to the winners of the last POUCH pronunciation Activity - the “Code Breaker”. The winning clubs received some great KGRE merchandise and cassettes. Please look at the list of correct answers - check for yourselves! The winners were, Junior (KGCC#11), Pioneer English Club (KGCC#19), Sky English Club (KGCC#33). Well done guys!!!

We are practicing pronunciation again in this edition of the POUCH, but this time we are practicing homophones. Homophones are words that are spelled differently (and have a different meaning) but pronounced exactly the same, for example, one and won. Rhyming words are words that have the same vowel sounds, for example, know, sew, toe, low, crow, mow, no, and row. In this list only know and no are homophones.

Homophones Game

Choose 10 homophones to dictate (see table below):

  • Tell club members you will say 10 words and they have to write them down.
  • Ask the group to stay silent as you dictate. Tell them not to look at or ask other group members what they have written, yet. It will spoil the fun (and the learning) if they do.
  • Read out the 10 homophones.
  • Now ask the group to find a partner to work with.
  • ·Each pair has to compare what they have written.
  • Now write the list of 10 homophones on the board – write a homophone for each word, for example, one/won. Or get students to call out what they have written and write the list up on the board.
  • Now discuss the similarities and differences between the pairs of words.
  • If club members disagree that the pairs of words have exactly the same sound drill the correct pronunciation with them.

I _________ this book
It’s_________, come look
A book about a special love
Homophones
Right ________ , you’ll _________
Two words that sound the same
But don’t look the same
Here’s the name
Homophones
I know there’s no one else
Who loves them so
You’re __________, let’s ___________these words
All day and night
They’re out of sight
Yes, they’re so sweet
That’s why we always _____________
Not that kind of ____________
But you can’t beat
Homophones
Two words that sound the same
But they’re not spelled the same
Homophones

You can listen to this song by Paul Jacobs & Sarah Durkee on the PBS Kids website at http://pbskids.org/lions/songs/homophones_rp.html or go to the PBS home page at www.pbskids.org then go to “between the lions” - it’s fourth on the list on the left. Then click “songs” at the bottom of the page. You’ll find it there.

Task Three

Make a recording of the Homophones song and send it to KGRE together with Task One and Task Two answers. The best entry will receive the Grand Prize of a Panasonic Combo Radio/Cassette/CD player. KGRE will also play the entries on the radio program. Here are some ideas for you: · Make up some music to go with the song lyrics. Sing it together. · Make up a jazz chant to go with the song and sing it together. · Read the song like a poem; find creative ways to read the song together. You can use sound effects or music.
