In the July-September POUCH clubs were asked to write to KGRE with suggestions
for activities that combine physical exercise and English. Two activities
based on ideas sent to us by the Junior English Club (#011) in Mojokerto,
East Java were included in the KGCC page in the December magazine. Thanks
Junior English Club!
Here’s another activity which is suitable for all ages and ability
levels, from primary school up to university and beyond. You could do
this in a classroom or outside. It’s lots of fun but be warned –
it’s also noisy!
Wall Dictation
For this activity the participants need to work in small teams of three
or four people.
Choose a short passage in English that is suitable for the age and ability
level of the participants. Perhaps 20 words would be enough for primary
students, but older people should do more. Make a copy for each group.
Don’t let them see it before the start of the activity.
Stick the copies to walls (or trees) and tell each group where their
copy is located.
- Person number 1 from each group goes to their copy on the wall and
memorises as much as they can – perhaps only a few words, perhaps
a whole sentence. Writing is not permitted during this step.
- Person number 1 returns to the group and dictates the words or sentence
to person number 2. This person writes them on a piece of paper.
- Person number 2 goes to the wall and memorises as much as possible.
- Person number 2 returns to the group and dictates the words or sentence
to person number 3.
- Continue in this way.
Remember that only one person from each team may go to the
wall at a time. No writing is allowed at the wall. No shouting is allowed:
the reader must return to the group to dictate what he or she has memorized.
Each person in the team must take their correct turn to read and write.
The teacher or activity leader may give the activity a time limit, or
wait until the first team has finished, or until all teams have finished.
Choosing a winner may be difficult as the team which finishes first may
have the largest number of mistakes. Have fun with wall dictation!
