There are four KGCCs in Bali, and all of them are in one
area. Thanks to some very energetic students and teachers in Jembrana,
KGCC has four clubs in four neighbouring schools – SMPN 1, 2, 3
and 4 Mendoyo. The clubs are Fellowship English Club #18, Fomula English
Club #041, Teenager English Club #055 and Generation English Club #080.
Sometimes they get together and use their English in fun ways.

Recently KGRE (Alwi, Cheryl and Kevin) visited these clubs at SMPN 4
Mendoyo with some special guests from Australia. The Aussies are making
a documentary for Australian TV. The program will be about AusAID projects,
including KGRE, in Indonesia. KGRE was asked to introduce them to some
of the people we work with. It was great to take them to Jembrana to meet
the club members there. After a delicious Balinese lunch the visitors
watched some great entertainment. One thing that really impressed KGRE
was that we often heard the teachers speaking English to their students.
The film crew from Australia were impressed too, and said they had a great
day. Thanks again to KGCC clubs in Jembrana and their teachers.

SEA UMY #32 and English Society Club #010 are two clubs
that love to have fun, but they like to spend their time helping other
people too. Both clubs helped the victims of the Yogyakarta earthquake.
R ecently SEA UMY visited ESC in Semarang for a day of sightseeing and
a club meeting. Unfortunately KGRE couldn’t be there but we’ve
had good reports about the day and some fantastic photos.
Medan
English Speaking Club #050 is a very active club that has a lot of interesting
activities. Apart from regular meetings they spend time helping schools
and other clubs improve the teaching and learning of English. They also
promote KGRE as often as they can. Recently they started an interactive
radio show on RRI Medan. Kevin visited them at RRI Medan in late January
2007. Some of the topics on their show are ‘We’re All Unique’
(adapting DPDF stories), quizzes, ‘Tips of the Day’, ‘Show
Off Your Talents’ (for SMA and teachers) and on air performances.
The program is ‘Midday Chat’ and it’s broadcast on Wednesdays
from 12 midday for an hour. Congratulations KGCC #050! Make sure to read
the next POUCH for news about Gazebo English Club #007 who are also getting
involved in radio in Madiun in East Java. |
KGRE visits
to KGCCs
Since the last POUCH, KGRE has visited a number
of clubs. You can read those Travel Reports, and see lots of photos, on
the KGRE website. Just look for
‘Travel’ at the top of our home page.
Sue
visited the English Conversation Club #055 in Probolinggo, East Java in
Nov. 2006. Club members organized a teacher workshop, a club Get Together
and a debate. Here’s what Sue wrote about the club Get Together.
‘In the evening there was an English camp for almost 150 students
from neighbouring schools. It included an anti drug presentation from
the local police, a spelling bee run by Amanda, an exchange teacher assistant
from America, games and quizzes and songs from KGRE. It was great. The
next day when I met the students at the debate competition they told me
they had spent most of the night talking in their tents and had only had
two or three hours sleep. But that didn’t stop them having some
very lively debates. Congratulations to all the teams who participated
and good luck with your debates in the future.’
Sue
also met the representatives of a number of clubs in Makassar when she
visited the city for a teacher workshop in October. They were Best Forum
Club #003, Pioneer English Meeting Conversation Club #021, Benteng Panynyua
English Club #039, MAKES Club #049 and ALKES Club #073.
Kevin met members of the Edelweiss Student English Club #005 when he
attended the opening of two English Language Resource Centres funded by
the Australian Embassy in Jakarta. He also met members of the English
Speaking Club #004, Alfa English Club #013 and Sasak Club #023 during
a trip to Lombok. KGRE staff love to visit KGCCs so why not invite us
this year?
