October 2006 - Sky English Club #33 in Cianjur, Central Java

Cheryl visited this club in September to deliver a prize they won in a POUCH competition (see Pouch Oct-Dec2006 edition). She was very impressed by the attitude of the club members, some of whom are English teachers, the others students. Many of them had never spoken to a native speaker before but they all tried very hard to use their English. Best of all, they weren’t afraid of making mistakes, and they helped each other when someone couldn’t think of the right word or expression. Here’s part of a Club Activity Report from Sky English Club that tells us something about their activities:

Talking about our activities, besides our regular meeting we visited an English course located at the centre of town. Before we visited we prepared some questions related to the history and management of this course. Amazingly, the leader of this course welcomed us warmly. He explained how he runs his course.

We really enjoyed the chat, sharing our ideas and our experiences with each other. He also showed us many pictures describing the learning and teaching process of his course. In other words, that day was very groovy. From that moment we decide to make it part of our regular program: ‘Sky Goes for a Walk’. In future we plan to visit a senior English teacher who has outstanding ability. Let us tell you about the experience of one of our club members, Asep. He’s a teacher at one senior high school. He tried using a Listening and Reading Class Set in his school and the response of his students was good. Beside that the students found that their teacher reads the English text differently to what they heard on the cassette. Good facilities make good students.

December 2006 - Get Me English Community #71 and University Student English Forum #60 in Jember, East Java

In their CARs, Get Me English Community report on regular club activities, recent activities and future plans. Here are some parts of recent reports:

Get Me English Community

My club enjoys very much the new look of the KGRE website. Thanks a lot to you KGRE – because of you our club got a new pen pal from Holland asking to find his ancestor’s address in Jember.

The monthly club meeting is always opened by the activity of listening to the KGRE material and continue to discuss the Pouch and do the club activity. Question and answer about the difficult thing the members found to be solved together. This is the best part. Sharing each member experiences. Taking and getting some information to improve the English of each member.

Our club has a brand new activity. Some of the members have the same hobby: correspondence with pen pals. Therefore we now have a session in the meeting where we talk about it. We plan to raise more funds for the club by guiding some tourists to have a day city tour in Jember and visiting some tourist attractions around the regency.

University Student English Forum is very active in promoting the club at the University of Jember. One of their regular activities is recruiting new members. They are also very active and successful debaters. Here are parts of recent CARs from USEF about their recruitment program and about the club Get Together.

In the middle of September we had a meeting to decide the USEFers who would organise the recruitment, and Dekalisa was chosen as the project officer. Under her leadership and teamwork we held the 7th USEF recruitment on October 8th. It was held with the theme ‘Breathe A New Wave of Quality’ and took place in the student activity centre. The agenda items included explanations about USEF as an English forum and about the organisation, introduction to debating, an English game and an interview in English.

In order to make the Meet and Greet program more colourful we were preparing a unique and interesting performance. Only for KGRE! It is Malin Kuncrit. Day by day we were practicing. We worked hard for that.
