Cultural Anecdotes

Greeting is an important aspect in our everyday life. Yet it can cause embarrasment when it comes to different countries with different ways of greeting people.
I spent a month in a village near Mt. Kerinci, Sumatra as a volunteer. In the village there were no toilets or bathrooms. Everyone washed their clothes, themselves, and also went to the toilet, in the river. Even though I carried a little bucket down to the washing place at the river containing soap, toothpaste etc, the local people would always ask "Mau kemana?"

On the way back, with wet hair and a wet sarong, they would always ask "Darimana?". At first I thought, "Don't? they know where we are going?". After a couple of weeks it seemed VERY strange. Finally we found out it was just like Australian saying "How are you going?" but not waiting or caring to know how you really are!Mary Hannigan, Student of Bahasa in Bali
Just a week into my stay in Melbourne I was waiting for a bus at a bus stop when a man started speaking to me. "G?ay mate", he said, with a strong Australian accent. "G?ay", I replied. "How ya going?", he continued. "By bus", I answered confidently. The man suddenly paused before asking the next question, "Are you OK?". "Yes, Sir, I? fine", I replied. The man then kept silent until the bus arrived. I was worried I made an impolite reply so I told my friend what I had said. He laughed and explained that I shouldn? answer "by bus" because "how ya going?" equals "how are you?" and you are supposed to answer, "Just fine, thanks".

Kang Guru Connection Club

Get Togethers

These special days are designed for all Connection Club Members in a specific province or area to get together and have some fun. Kevin recently met with The Best Forum Club and several other Makassar based clubs to discuss having a Get Together in Makassar Just a few weeks ago Kevin talked about the same thing with The Excellent Club in Jombang. Everyone seems very excited at the possibility.

The KGCC Get Together for Clubs in South Sulawesi will be held in Makassar on June, 23rd. Clubs in East Java will have a Get Together in Surabaya in August or September.

We are sure you will enjoy the day with KGRE in your area but Club members have to be prepared to help with the organization of the day and the activities.
