English Strikes Back finally finds success. Their recent
Speech Event has been highly praised as the best competition in Yogyakarta
for a long time. This year there were 23 participants in the Speech
Competition and 36 participants in the Debate. English Strikes Back
was a grand event that was really appreciated by the students. This
was proven by the large number of participants. Organization of the
competition began in January 2006, and actual promotion began in February.
All types of media - website, newsletters, newspaper, television, poster
and email promotions helped spread the word.
We had a nice disscusion with Josie (from IALF Bali)
in Pizza Hut Mall Malioboro. There, we talked about many things and
explained all about the preparation for the Speech Competition. Josie
came to Yogya especially to be one of the adjudicators together with
Suryanto from American Corner, Iwan Satriawan from the Faculty of Law,
Matthew from EF and Tom from RELO. The Jury
concentrated
on current issues, comprehension, sensitivity, intonation, gesture,
diction, etc. to finally choose the winner. This Speech Competition
was entered by students from goverment and private universities across
the Yogyakarta region. The topics were local autonomy towards democratization
and good goverment, forestry open to plantation, the rise of Indonesian
Movies, the threat of Avian Flu and North Sumatera reconstruction after
the tsunami.
While waiting for the final announcement, there were
art performances by the team of Dimas. This team has performed in “30
Detik Menjadi Bintang” on Global TV - Modern Dance both Javanese
and Chinese. It was very entertaining. Then Josie presented a special
KGRE Quiz. All winners were very happy to get KGRE merchandise. Congratulations
to Andi, the representative from UGM who was the winner of the Speech
Competition. And thanks to KGRE and Josie for their support.
