AusAID Canberra and KGCCs

Kathryn Elliott works for AusAID in Canberra. She is a Program Officer on the Indonesia Desk and is looking after the Indonesian bilateral aid program. AusAID regularly sends staff from Australia to visit AusAID projects and activities in Indonesia to see what they are doing and how they are doing it. Kathryn came to Indonesia in March 2004 to take a look at Kang Guru. She was especially interested in KGRE Connection Club network and the members of those clubs.

As a part of her visit KGRE introduced her to Connection Clubs and their members, teachers and teacher groups along with other people who are a part of the KGRE ‘family’ in Indonesia. For example, here’s a little of what Kathryn said about her visits with KG Connection Clubs in South Sulawesi. Kathryn spoke very highly of the meetings she had with KG Connection Clubs in South Sulawesi.

“The Pioneer Club meets every Sunday at Fort Rotterdam and they sit outside with the microphone and they introduce the new members that are joining the Club. I think there were about four to five new members joining on the day that we went to visit the club. And it was really a fun activity because the other members got to ask the new members questions about why they wanted to learn English, their interests, what their hope for the future and also just fun conversation about all sorts of things. And in the afternoon we moved over to the Best Forum Club which is very active KG Connection Club based at SMK 1. That was a really useful Club to visit because it had different groups coming together at different levels. So we had groups at the SMK level but we also had people that were from the university and also people that were un-employed that were looking for other opportunities. Members of the MAKES Club which is another connection club in Makassar also attended. Our visit to the English Lovers Club in Wajo was especially interesting because we looked at how Kang Guru English materials were being used as prizes to give to students at SD level. We actually watched an English language competition for SD level students which was quite fun. They had to unscramble words, they had to do cross word puzzles and so on. It was a lot of fun.”
