Spelling Bee

Goal: to recognise spelling errors and correct them.
Time required: 10 - 15 minutes
Size of group: unlimited
Materials required: You will need a pencil/pen and paper for each participant. Give the words shown on the right to each participant/group.

Procedure:
1. Divide participants into groups. Tell the group members that they are going to have a 5 minute Club Spelling Test.
2. Tell them that you are about to show them a list of 20 words and that half of them are spelt incorrectly. Also tell them that this particular list was compiled after tests on 87,000 schoolchildren between the ages of 13 and 18.
3. Ask them to identify the 10 words that have been incorrectly spelt and write down the correct spelling.
4. Display the list for 5 minutes and discuss when completed.

Discussion Points:
1. Does anyone feel that they have the 10 correct answers?
2. Why are these words sometimes awkward to spell?

ceiling adress

What to look for in a job

Work in groups of three. Here are fifteen things to think about when choosing a job. Choose ten that you think are important, then rank them in order 1-10 with the most important as number ONE. (If you cannot agree entirely, you will have to compromise).

The most important thing about a job is:
_____ the salary
_____ the interest of the work
_____ flexi-time
_____ the people you work with
_____ the chances for promotion
_____ the work environment (clean, well-lit, etc.)
_____ the opportunity to travel
_____ the opportunity to make decisions
_____ learning new skills
_____ being close to where you live
_____ feeling you are helping other people
_____ facing new challenges
_____ social status
_____ security
_____ the perks (company car, cheap meals, etc.)

When you have finished compare your choices with another group. Are they very different?
Is there anything else (not mentioned above) that you think is very important when choosing a job?
