KG Connection English Clubs in Riau

During a trip to Pekanbaru early September, KGRE met with members from the three KG Connection Clubs. They were the Garuda Conversation Club, the Akbar Conversation Club and theAtasee English Club.
Here is Kevin’s Travel Report for you to read:
‘On Sunday the 1st of September, after a three day trip to Bengkalis, I visited the headquarters of the Garuda Conversation Club about 20 km out of Pekanbaru, Riau. Members of three Connection Clubs from the immediate area were there to chat, play some games and to learn a bit more about English and KGRE.

Pak Wijayanto and Pak Elizal came from COREMAP Pekanbaru to talk about the work of their project in Riau. Club members found this very interesting and asked a lot of questions - in English of course!
For KGRE it was great to see so many keen English language learners from these three Clubs. They mixed together and hopefully found a few new friends that day. Club members asked a lot of questions about Australia, AusAID and of course, KGRE. I interviewed Handoko and Asnawi and asked them about their lives, their school and their Club. Listen for both of them on KGRE over the next few months.

I also asked three Garuda members to help me.Riska, Ira and Yesi gave me some questions to ask PADI and Andien.A few days after this visit to Pekanbaru, I met and interviewed both PADI and Andien in Jakarta. Thanks girls, the questions were great - and so were you! Have you heard the interviews on KG radio yet?’

Wizards English Conversation Club
Banjarbaru - South Kalimantan

Members of this English Club are students of SMK Telkom Banjarbaru. Although school work keeps them busy, they also devote a lot of time to their language club. The following report shows just how enthusiastic and innovative they are:

  • Each Friday and Thursday afternoon is ‘Having Small Talk’ (Conversation).

Members of WECC make groups and determine a topic to be kicked around. In this case every member has a chance to enhance their capabilities in vocabulary and pronunciation. We discuss about grammar problems as well helping each other with difficult items.

  • Conducting ‘English Days 2002’ to celebrate the 17th anniversary of Sandhykara Putra Telkom Foundation.
We had a One Day Seminar inviting native speakers from the USA and Australia. The topic of the seminar was ‘English As A Global Language’. We also held English Competitions such as a Speech Contest, News Reading and a Debate Contest about theAustralian Parliamentary system. Students from general high schools and vocational high schools in Martapura and Banjarbaru took part in this event. The purpose of the competition was to motivate members of the club to know the value of a good capability in English.

Member Achievements

WECC has always made effort to take part in every competition that has an English connection. We won the Debate Contest at the provincial level and represented our area at the national level in Sabuga, Bandung.

We are still ‘green’ (new comers) or just like ‘a tadpole in progress to be a frog’. We wanna have relationships with English Clubs all over the world.
