Kevin and Ogi have been visiting KGCCs recently. During 2005 they will visit even more clubs. Have you invited them yet to visit your club? If you invite KGRE to visit then Kevin and Ogi will try very hard to visit your club next year. Check the last POUCH for more details. |
| On September 27th Kevin flew to Surabaya and then caught a taxi to Mojokerto to visit the KGCC # 011 - the Junior Club. This very active club is based at SMP 1 Mojokerto. They were Club of the Month for October 2003 and if you read about them you can see that they are a very active club. When he visited them, they were also very active. They began by giving a tour of their school. The school was terrific with beautiful gardens with lawn and flowers and lots of trees. There were colourful murals painted by students on themes such as drugs and smoking. That was good to see. They seem to be very interested in health and healthy environments. They even had special areas where they were growing plants for use in traditional medicines. The staff and the students all support this healthy approach to school and Kevin thinks it is a great idea. The students were very proud of their school too. Another thing I noticed were the walls of the classrooms - they were covered with posters and more importantly, students’ work. During his meeting with the club members Kevin saw many things including a dance performance which was quite spectacular. Then the members all sat in small groups enjoying English language games. Games included Snakes and Ladders, vocabulary games and magazine discussions. Joy and Delon from ‘Indonesian Idol’ were the subjects of the discussion in one of the groups. Kevin spoke will all the students and they asked me a lot of great questions too. They finished with some games and KGRE gave away some prizes including t-shirts, pens and keyrings. KGRE also gave the club a full series cassette set of Series 44 from the radio program.

The Kang Guru Fans English Club in Kupang - KGCC # 012 - was one of the first members of the Connection Club network. All members of the Club, including Theresia Thamelan, their highly motivated leader, were at the Artha Wacana University in Kupang in September when Kevin visited. Kevin spoke with members in their special club headquarters situated right in the middle of the university. This special room of theirs is full of books and other reading materials collected and put together for the use of club members. One very interesting club activity is playing football. Football? Yes, both men and women in the club play football together and they play the game in English. What a great and fun idea from the KG Fans Club in Kupang. Keep up the good work, guys!
Comments included ones about learning English, the usefullness of KGRE materials for their studies as well as cross cultural questions. It was really good to have Caroline there and she explained a bit about Aussie culture. Club members were surprised and happy to know that Caroline could speak Bahasa Indonesia and so asked her why she wanted to learn Bahasa Indonesia and how did she learn it. They also got useful tips from her about studying languages. It was a great visit really and we think that they were happy to have a new Aussie friend. Pak Hakim even promised to take Caroline on one of their excursion activities soon. That’s certainly friends helping friends. |
