Gazebo English Study Club
Trenggalek - East Java
September 2004

Club Profile

Gazebo means a small building designed to give a wide view of the surrounding areas. This one is placed in Trenggalek about1km from the town square. Trenggalek is in a mountainous area with beautiful scenery. We have 100 lively members. Members change regularly. Most of them are from senior high school but we have some members of the general public too.

Club activities?

  • General meetings which are held three times a week.
  • Going on excursions. This is called ‘Happy Sunday’ because it happens on Sunday. During the activity members must speak English and if they break the rule they will get punishment. There are games as well and prizes to win.
  • Visiting tourism destinations.
Our first tour was to Mt. Bromo. We went to Bromo during the night and we arrived there at 2am. It was dark and cold. We waited until 5 o’clock. To our surprise there were many foreigners there and we practised our English. We also went to Coban Rondo waterfall and Kusuma Agrowisata in Batu, Malang. It was a fascinating tour and we want to do it again but to other places.
  • Closing Meeting which is held every four months. We do many activities such as speeches, reading poems, singing songs, drama performances and dances. The purpose of the activity is to improve English, to show members’abilities and to increase motivation by giving certificates. Members who have left Gazebo to continue their study in university sometimes still come to Gazebo just for a visit. It’s nice, isn’t it?

Student English Activity - UMY
Yogyakarta
October 2004

The Student English Activity or better known as SEA - UMY is one of the most active clubs in the KG Connection Club network. It is quite clear that this club is well-organised and well-managed by reliable and motivated people. It seems that every activity is carefully planned and implemented with active participation from all the Club members. This confirms the SEA’s motto ‘It is only for globally minded students’.

New Members Recruitment

The recruitment process starts with registration time where students from different faculties fill in their registration form. They have to pay Rp 2,500 and they get a nice sticker from SEA. Then they have an interview. Students have to answer some questions from interviewers about their motivation, personality, performance, English capability, achievement and experience in organisations. Finally through a process of recommending, lobbying and debating, a number of students are accepted into SEA. Then there is an Outbound Activity for the new members of the Club. It is a must activity for the new members because the activity includes team work - physical, creative, brain challenging and talented performance. For this year the activity was held in Mbebeng, Kaliurang regency.

Inter Faculty English Debate (IFED)

This has been held annually since 1999. IFED is an English debate competition for members of UMY. It plays a big part in sharpening the students critical and argumentation skills. It also provides a medium for students to develop their English capabilities. In line with this activity we also actively participate in several nation-wide debate competitions such as Inter Varsity English Debate (IVED), Indonesian Students Forum (ISF), and Java Overland English Debate (JOVED).
