KGCC Get Together
in Jepara, 31 August 2003
On Sunday, August 31st, Kevin attended the 3rd Kang Guru
Connection Club Get Together. It was held in Jepara and was attended by
over 100 KG Connection Club members from as far away as Semarang. The
activities began with an opening speech by Mizan Sya’roni, leader
of the Organising Committee from the Young Jepara English Club - KGCC
# 030. Kevin introduced himself and then went straight into things with
the regular Club Mixing Up Activity. The activity is designed to get members
from different clubs mixing and meeting each other.
Next
was KGRE’ Language Quiz. Participants were organised into groups
of 6 and the groups had to include people from at least three different
clubs. The language quiz was successful (and fun) and it was great
to see members discussing and thinking about the answers together. The
day continued with mini-presentations from participating clubs. These
included poetry, singing performances and short speeches. Guest speaker,
Pak Taslihan from the ACIAR supported shrimp project in Jepara, also gave
a presentation about the very important work he is doing with shrimp aquaculture
and disease control. Students really enjoyed the presentation and they
asked many questions about the research project. Questions and answers
were in both English and Bahasa Indonesia. There will be more about this
ACIAR supported activity on KGRE radio and in the December 2003 magazine.
ACIAR not only supports this research in Indonesia but also in Thailand
and Australia. During the day a total of fifteen Door Prizes were given
away plus many other prizes for other competitions. The Jepara KGCC Get
Together finished at 3 pm with presentation of gifts to individual clubs
attending the Get Together. The Organising Committee gave a wooden motorbike
made right there in Jepara by local craftsmen as a thank you gift to Kevin.
KGRE wants to thank the Jepara Organising Committee very much for all
their hard work organising the wonderful day. Everything was well planned
and went so well including the communication equipment, snacks and lunch,
club presentations and general minute to minute activities. A job very
well done!

Native Speaker Conversation Ideas with the Young Jepara
English Club
Talking to native speakers can be difficult for many English
language learners in Indonesia. The activity is also a cross-cultural
activity and therefore asking ‘the right’ questions can help
the conversation to go along smoothly. KGRE and the Young Jepara English
Club discussed this issue and here are some suggestions for you.
- Where are you from?
- What is your native language?
- Are you on holidays or do you live here?
- How long have you been in Indonesia/Bali/Jakarta?
- What do think of Indonesia/Bali/Jakarta?
- Do you find it hot here?
|
 |
- Have you tried Indonesian food yet?
- What do you think of it?
- What Indonesian food is your favorite?
- What are the main differeces between your country and Indonesia?
- Have you heard of Kang Guru Radio English?
