Interview Competition
Medan English Society - KGCC # 050

KGRE Interview segments with some famous Indonesian actresses and singers are very interesting for us. They include GIGI, PADI, Marcell and Andien. They have inspired us to carry out a very interesting activity at our meetings which we call ‘Dare to Interview’. Most of our members like it so much. Initially we were a bit confused who actually deserved to be interviewed. We eventually decided that they could interview their favourite teachers or even lecturers. And they did it in writing. In the next meeting we welcomed them one by one to come forward to read the results of their interviews. Wow! It was cool bananas indeed!
“The name of the lecturer who I interviewed is Ismail Marzuki. He graduated from one of the most well known colleges in Medan. Besides being a lecturer he also works as a computer technician for 12 companies. He believes in life don’t ever do useless things and don’t break your promises. As a human being he also has an ambition to get a bright future in his life. He wants to have more than three wives. Unfortunately until right now he never get it yet ...”

Note from KGRE:
Planning interviews is a great way to practise questioning techniques and asking good questions. Why not get people in the club to pretend to be someone famous. For example someone could be Megawati or Krisdayanti or even Aussie Prime Minister Mr. John Howard. The interview is just one part of the activity of course. Then the information can be written up into a text for others to read. That’s what we do here at KGRE for our radio program.

Preparing For the Future
Junior - KGCC # 011

Each year some of our members change with the new students including the president and others. So we as members have to learn to do everything - even perhaps be president. Every month we also hold a Language Activity. We are going to hold this activity in the last week of October. Another activity is to open prizes and souvenirs from KGRE in front of the students at the Monday Flag Ceremony. It arouses the new students to know more about KGRE and Junior in our school. Of course they want the prizes too. Putting the KGRE poster, flyer or other interesting information on ‘Special English Wall Magazine’ is also a great way to promote club activities to other students.

Note from KGRE:
Clubs need to be prepared each year when members leave and move away. Some clubs have stopped writing to KGRE recently and the reason they give is because members who had recently left the Club were the leaders. Nobody was ready to replace them. Be sure to have plans underway to replace the leaders as soon as they have gone and maintain the necessary communications with KGRE.

Discussion Point

An interesting question that has been asked in some clubs is this one.

“Why are you a member of this club?

This question is a simple one really and ideal for club discussion. Members should be able to explain why they are a member of the club. Why do they come to meetings? Answers to this may range from to learn more about English to meeting new people and have fun. If members don’t know or can’t say why they are a member of the club then perhaps it needs some further discussion. Once it is established why the members are in the club then clubs can take it a step further. For example, if a member comes to improve their English speaking skills then it can be expected that they ‘talk a lot and participate as often as they can in speaking activities’. If someone is in the club to meet others then they should be willing to socialize with other members and have conversations (in English of course) on a regular basis. It might be interesting to do a simple survey showing the reasons why people are in the club. Remember people may have more than one reason for joining the club.
KGRE would be very interested in the results of such a survey if you do one.
