- Excellent English Conversation Club in Mamuju, West Sulawesi
Actually our club is active with many English activities.
We want to tell the other clubs about them on KGRE website. Unfortunately
there is no internet service in our town and it is the biggest problem
that we have. We realize that we are behind others in use of information
technology but this
doesn’t discourage us. In club meetings we sometimes invited some
government official in the area to discuss about internet facilities.
We have been told that the internet service will be available in Mamuju
in 2007. We really hope so. KGRE NOTE: Be sure to send your stories to
us, okay?
Besides having regular English meetings every Sunday, we also organized
some events such as on 4 th December when there was “Special EECC
English Meeting with a native speaker, Mr. Lonnie from the USA, a tourist
that stayed in Mamuju for 2 weeks. Recently (April 2006) we visited some
of the senior high school in Mamuju. We may report that our English Traveling
Program gave knowledge to many students especially in English Speaking
Classes. We know from the first time we entered their classrooms that
several of them feel afraid because we used English, but when we introduced
some souvenirs that Ogi had sent us, suddenly the classroom was alive.
Thanks once again to Ogi for her willingness to help our club.
August 2006 -
English Society Club in Semarang, Central Java
This club has a very active social work program. Sometimes
this involves visiting a local orphanage where the club members teach
the children English through fun activities such as songs and games.
However, after the May earthquake the club went to the
Jogjakarta area to help with the clean-up. They worked alongside other
volunteers from Wahid Hasyim University and Pondok Pesantren Sunan Kalijaga.
They spent time in Sleman and then in Klaten, helping the local people
in many ways. They divided themselves into four teams: the reconstruction
team, the medical team, the psychological team and the happy team. They
also did live radio reports from the site for the interactive English
program on RRI Pro 2 FM Semarang and helped with fund raising.
Here’s
what Keyko from the English Society Club wrote to KGRE:
‘Through this disaster we would like to say our
gratitude to all the victims of Central Java earthquake since they have
taught us how to be grateful, accept the condition whether it is good
or bad and how to handle it. Here, we also learn how to share with others
as although all the survivors were in such a terrible condition, still
they share food with another place which was in worse condition and out
of reach from the government’s help and also for us. Even though
they were in difficult moments they still have time to think of others.
What wise people.’
Thanks to the English Society Club for your hard work.
Kang Guru is very happy to support you in your activities.

2006 - Pioneer English Club in Madura, East Java
The
Pioneer English Club joined the KGCC network in August 2001. The club
has been very active in promoting English language in Madura, both in
Pondok Pesantren Al-Amien where it is located, and also in the surrounding
area. The club’s current leader, Suryadi, is very proactive in creating
opportunities for both his club and others. KGRE wishes to acknowledge
this contribution as thanks to the hard work of the Pioneer English Club,
other clubs in Madura are benefiting a great deal too. In August, Suryadi
and his committee organized a very successful KGRE teacher workshop and
club Get Together (GTG) in Pamekasan. Suryadi sent us the following report
about the second day of the program. “... They became more excited
when Kevin and Cheryl taught them ‘G’Day G’Day’
song and gave away KGRE package for every participant. Thanks KGRE, the
participants don’t go home empty handed! More over, they discovered
fresh challenges and new experiences in learning English. They looked
very enthusiastic and energetic joining the Kang Guru Radio English Get
Together 2006, they got many door prizes, and this is the important one,
they are more motivated in learning English than before.”
