Running your KGCC

Club leaders are often energetic, well organised and responsible people. But then something happens and they can’t spend as much time on club activities as before. Perhaps exams, work, illness or family matters make it difficult for him or her to contribute to the running of the club as before.

Has this happened in your club? Did the club continue operating effectively or did problems arise? Did the leader try to do too much and as a result became overworked and tired? Do you know a club in your area that stopped operating because of problems such as this?
It’s very important that every club has a strategy for training people to become leaders. This means that the club won’t depend too much on one person. There are as number of ways you could do this, but here are a couple of suggestions:

If your club has a lot of members there could be a number of committees responsible for different aspects of the club’s operations. Each committee could have a leader and a deputy, and a number of members. Everyone in the club should be in one of the committees and playing an active role, big or small, in running the club. If one person cannot play an active role for a while other members should be ready to take over.

If your club is small you might have a leader, a secretary and a treasurer, rather than committees. However, you should also have deputies who help and can do those jobs if necessary. Just like in a big club, every club member should be helping. Perhaps these positions could be for six or 12 months, with the deputies taking over next time. This is a great opportunity for people to learn how to lead, manage and organize.

Perhaps the two important words to consider here are sharing and communication. If everyone does more than their share of the work you’ll have a great club. If people communicate effectively problems will be solved when they are still small.

Sky English Club

On the 9th of September, Cheryl travelled to Cianjur to visit the Sky English Club (KGCC#033). This was as special visit as the club won a recent POUCH bulletin competition and Cheyl went there to deliver the prize - a big CD/cassette tape player/radio. Cheryl was impressed by the standard of English and the fact that they’d all read the latest POUCH. However the thing that impressed her most was that they were prepared to take a risk and speak English even though they might be making mistake. If someone didn’t know how to express an idea in English the others helped. This is a good example of a ‘safe’ environment and it obviously works well for this club.
