English Lovers
Labuhan Batu - North Sumatra
July 2004
English Lovers was one of the first clubs to join KGCC
way back in 2001. For three years this Club has shown their committment
to be an active English club. This has in return brought many benefits
to the club members. This Club was Club of the Month for March 2002. Once
again because of their great enthusiasm we are happy to make them Club
of the Month once again. Here are parts of their CAR:
The other activity was delivering religious addresses or
sermons on Fridays at the mosque or our school. The addresses were in
English and lasted for about ten minutes and the topics were always varied.
This activity is always well received and highly appreciated by the audience
as well as bringing benefits to the members. They were supposed to memorise
their address before they gave it. Students at our school jokingly call
the presenter a muslim scholar from Australia. This activity is still
conducted regularly.
One thing for you to know is that we now have a new activity.
This activity looks like it has nothing to do with language but to us,
it has! Our new activity is playing soccer. Every Sunday afternoon we
gather together on a football field. During the football game members
are supposed to speak English. The idea is that it may force us to communicate
in natural and sporty type language.
KGRE note: What a wonderful idea. Your soccer activity
is terrific and if you use English then it is a great way to practise
both sport and language.

Sebauk Conversation
Club
Bengkalis - RIAU
August 2004
This active club in Bengkalis was founded by Pak Afrizal
and his close friends. Pak Afrizal was formerly the advisor of the Garuda
Conversation Club in Pekanbaru, Riau. When he moved to Bengkalis he created
a new English club in Bengkalis. It is called Sebauk Conversation Club
(SCC). This club has remained a very active one since joining KGCC in
September 2003. Here are some of their activities as written in their
CAR:
Watching Bengkalis TV and listening to
KGRE on Radio Duta Suara Selapindo
Our Club members are very keen to listen and watch the
‘Bengkalis Weekly News’ every Sunday night at 7pm. We also
listen to the KGRE program on Radio Duta Suara Selapindo every Sunday
at 5pm. So listening to KGRE’s radio program and watching the English
news on Bengkalis TV have become a routine activities for all club members
to improve English.
Practicing English with foreigners is one
way to improve English.
We met and conducted a conversation with Dr. Francine Neago,
a 65 year old French woman who has been living on the island of Bengkalis
for more than one year. Dr. Francine Neago is an expert who trains baby
Orang Utans on the island of Rupat. She was involved in a project proposal
on nature conservation which was called Wildlife Sanctuary of Rupat. What
questions did we ask her? What do you think of Bengkalis?, How long will
you stay here?, What are you going to do here? Do you have some tips and
methods to learn English? What food and drink do you like much?
Do you find it hot here?, Do you feel like at home?
KGRE Note: The club’s relationship with Francine,
sounds very interesting. Congratulations to all of you for being involved
in this way with the world around you. I feel that clubs and members need
to invite all sorts of people into their meetings as a lot can be learnt, right?
They do not have to be native speakers of English either, you know!
