The Environment and KGCCs 2007 (April - May 2007)

The staff at KGRE are already preparing for the September 2007 magazine. The theme will be the Environment. Now that's an important issue for sure! Agree? KGRE wants clubs and members to carefully read this KGRE Environmental Task Handout. There are plenty of copies for everyone!

By joining with at least one of these special tasks, KGCCs and their members will –

  • be using real English in the context of an important 21st century problem
  • enjoy learning more about the environment
  • make contact with Australian students and teachers
  • win prizes for their clubs
  • be helping KGRE with the September 2007 magazine

ATTENTION ALL CLUB LEADERS and MEMBERS

The staff at KGRE are already preparing for the September 2007 magazine. It is always a huge job to complete the magazines on time. The theme for the September 2007 magazine will be the Environment. KGRE has thought of three ways that your club can be a part of that magazine. At the same time club members can practice English in a real way, have some fun PLUS win prizes for their club by all working together.

  • Activity One — KGCC 2007 Environment Poster Competition
    (CLOSES END OF JULY)

Ask yourselves — has your club been involved in any sort of environmental activity in the past year? If you have then why not tell us ALL about it? Tell us about your environmental activity in pictures and drawings. Send your A3 size color poster, with English texts included, to KGRE and your club could be a big winner! KGRE may even use it as the cover for the September magazine — wouldn't that be great?

  • Activity Two — KGCC 2007 Environment Environmental Plan
(PLANS TO KGRE BY END OF MAY)

Perhaps your club has a plan for a future local environmental activity? It could be a beach clean up, a visit to schools to talk to students about rubbish control and collection, or maybe even an in-club activity day discussing local environmental issues. Whatever your plan, send the details of your plan to KGRE. Maybe we can help you? Maybe your plan will be a winner too.

  • Activity Three — KGCC 2007 Environmental Information Exchange with Australian Students and Teachers
(EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST TO KGRE BY MAY 10TH)

This task involves clubs asking ten questions to students in Australian schools about the environment. KGCCs will then be able to compare the answers from Australia to the environmental issues and situation in the club's own city or town.

KGRE will help you –

  • with 5 of the 10 questions (the other 5 questions will be related to your club's situation/location)
  • with the Australian contacts BUT you do need to have email to be a part of this activity, okay? IF you are interested in following this activity but DON'T have email then send an SMS to KGRE and have a chat

KGRE hopes you are interested in being involved in this ‘international’ activity. It is a great chance to make contacts in Australia.

If you have ANY questions about any of these activities, please contact Kevin or Cheryl, by email, before May 10th. Or you can leave an SMS on the KGRE handphone (08123870479) and we will call you back for a quick chat!

DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS CHANCE TO PRACTISE YOUR ENGLISH!

All three activities will be a part of the September KGRE magazine. Clubs that participate successfully will be given Environmental Packs from Oz and Indo for use in club activities. For excellent ideas on environmental activities out the website from Tunas Hijau in Sby —

Here are some fabulous possibilities for clubs to consider from Tunas Hijau especially for KGCC 2007 Activity One and KGCC 2007 Activity Two –

  1. Create an exhibition on the environment

Clubs can choose a theme such as rare fauna, global warming and use of energy, forest, water and air pollution, biodiversity or sustainable consumption.

  2. Conduct an Environment Survey — for example
    • How many types of energy available?
    • How many paper used at your school every month?
    • How much water used?
    • How much waste is produced and what type?
    • Find ways how your school can reduce the usage of energy.
    • Report your findings to school principal.
  3. Club Environment Folder

Ask fellow club members and friends to write poems, drawing picture or make drama play about environment. Put all of the contributions together in a Club Environment Folder.

  4. Clean Up Day

Choose an area in your community that is dirty and full of rubbish to clean up. Perhaps conduct a Clean Up Day around your school or somewhere in your community.

  5. Make a garden or ‘Green Area’ at your school
  6. Begin developing a School Environment Policy for your school

This is important as an effort to support what schools (students, teachers) have done. Example: policy on using banana leaves instead of wrapping paper for nasi bungkus, or ban on plastic bags for drinks and use glasses instead.

  7. How should our environment be in 2025?

Imagine the future. Ask your friends or other club members to write an article which answers the question — How should our environment be in 2025? Make a wall magazine or another type of exhibit to show how club members feel. Let other people see your ideas and suggestions for the future.
