Kang GURU English Language Interactive Radio
Presenter's Network Member Profiles
Last updated January 30th, 2008
On August 4th 2005, seven eager and hard-working radio presenters met at IALF Bali for a two day meeting. All seven of these people present English language interactive radio programs in their respective cities. They were invited to meet with each other, and with KGRE. The main reason for the meeting was to begin the process of forming a KGRE English Language Interactive Radio Presenter’s Network. |

Bowo Pranoto — Banyuwangi
My Name is Bowo Pranoto. I was born in Blitar on May 4th, 1966. I am an
English teacher at SMPN 2 Banyuwangi. I graduated from Jember University in
1988. I am also a teacher trainer and Managing Basic Education facilitator in
my area. I knew KGRE for the first time when Mr. Kevin Dalton presented a Kang GURU workshop in 2001 at The Asida Hotel, Batu – Malang. The workshop was
supported by the Education and Culture Department of East Java. Province. I was
so interested in KGRE programs so I asked Capt. KGRE some questions about the
program and whether KGRE could be broadcasted in Banyuwangi. A couple of months
later I found a radio station in my beloved town which was willing to broadcast
KGRE.
|
|
Now KGRE is broadcast at Radio Suara Habibulloh and the manager of the radio
station asked me to be the presenter of this program. Being a presenter for the
first time was uncomfortable for me but I kept trying to increase my confidence
and never stop making myself better presenting on KGRE. To tell you frankly I
am very sad if there is no one calling my English interactive show. But I
always invite listeners to join the program by giving them challenging and
interesting the keenest listener to be a guest announcer on the radio to
accompany me to present to great program. It is hard work but I really enjoy it
and I do appreciate KGRE programs supporting the improvement of English
language studies in my beloved country, Indonesia.

Fathul Muin — Tuban
My name is Fathul Muin. My date of birth is November 30th, 1968. I graduated
from IKIP PGRI Tuban in 1993. I am an English teacher of SMPN 5 Tuban. I have
been a member if KGRE since around 1991. However I was not active as it was
difficult for me to listen to the KGRE program at that time in my town. In
January 2003, after reading the December 2002 edition of KGRE magazine, I found
information that KGRE welcomed any radio stations to broadcast their programs.
I tried to contact the English department of IKIP PGRI Tuban, English Teachers
Forum and Swara Pantura FM Radio to cooperate with this program. They agreed
and I sent my proposal to KGRE in Denpasar, Bali. IKIP PGRI Tuban then asked me
to be the coordinator as well as the presenter of this program.
|
To tell you frankly the public interest in English is still low in Tuban so I
have to do many things to improve my program. I have been developing it by
coordinating with students, English teachers, English Students' Association
(SEA) and English Conversation Club (KGCC). We have conducted English debates,
practiced reading English new articles and developed English dialogues for our
interactive program. Every first week of each month we have an ‘English
for Children’ segment on the show. It is hard work but I enjoy it very
much because I consider this is very useful and helpful to improve my poor
English and at the same time help others. Thank you to the Australian
government for their AusAID programs in Indonesia especially KGRE.

The program named ‘English Funky Afternoon’. The
duration was 2 hours including KGRE. We present the program as simple and as
light as possible. We use teenagers style to broadcast, but we don't limit the
listeners who is willing to join/call. Before broadcasting, we usually prepare
certain topic to discuss and also script to anticipate if we are speechless. We
also accept poems from listeners by letter, we also give information and tips
in English, usually we give information about music, or profiles of foreign
singers. The callers may send their best regard to their friends or request
song to play by calling at 4720362 or by SMS.

Eva — Banjarbaru
I know KGRE since I joined BELC (Banjarbaru English Lovers Club). I was a
student of Forestry Faculty and also being a broadcaster of another radio
station (I mean, not the same with where I am working now (Borneo FM) at that
time. It's very nice and exciting, looks like they never lack of topics to
discuss and games to play. Sometimes, we gathered at RSPD Banjar and broadcast
together. I fee so much fun! Coz my basic as broadcaster in Banjarbaru. By the
time's running, I'm out from that station, then apply to RSPD Banjar, thankfull
that I was well-accepted there. I'm not holding the English Program yet, at
about a year I was a fanatic listener of English program. There were Ana, Juni
and Toni as the presenter of English Program in RSPD Banjar at about 2 years.
But after Toni leave to Australia to continue his study, and Juni leave to
concentrate to his new job in Banjarmasin, then Ana hold the program alone.
Sometimes Ana ask me to accompany her, and of course I didn't refuse her. That
was a chance to study for me! Then someday Ana decide to quit from RSPD Banjar
because she had to concentrate to her job. Since that time, I was the host of
English Funky Afternoon.
At first, holding the program alone, makes me so nervous. I realize that I've
made so many mistakes. But I'm so surprised that there was a caller which call
me that time, it's a wonderful spirit for me!

Jack and Nada
On November 12th, 2004, Jack and Nada began their ‘Talk To Me’
radio program on RRI Mataram. It has become a very successful program in
Lombok. At a Listeners' Meeting on April 29th, around 150 listeners met at RRI
Mataram for a farewell party for Jack and Nada. Sad to say, they left Indonesia
in May. Luckily a young Aussie has taken over the show. Violet Rish, an
Australian Youth Ambassador for Development, began working with Jack and Nada
before they left RRI Mataram. Good luck to Jack and Nada for the future and
special thanks to them both for their enthusiasm and interest in KGRE. Thanks
for volunteering guys!

Syahrir Badulu — Makassar
My full name is Syahrir Badulu. I was born in Majene on 31 December 1968. My
senior high school was at SMA 1 Majene and I graduated in 1987 and from IKIP
Ujung Pandang in 1991. In 1992 I was accepted at SMK Negeri 1 Makassar. In 1996
I won a scholarship from Dikmenjur (Department of Vocational Education –
Jakarta) in conjunction with ADB to undertake a graduate certificate of TESOL
at Hawthorn Institute, which is affiliated to the University of Melbourne,
Australia. I continued my post-graduate study at La Trobe University in Applied
Linguistics, in conjunction with the English department FBS UNM (Universitas
Negeri Makassar). Finally I finished my graduate studies in 2004.The first time
I listened to KGRE was on RRI Makassar in 1994. Since then I have been keeping
in touch with KGRE through radio shows, magazines, cassettes and other
souvenirs. I established the Best Forum Club in 1995, and then officially
linked to KGCC in 2002.
|
I thank KGRE for giving me the opportunity to be the chairman of the Organising
Committee for the very first ‘KG Connection Club Get Together’ in
Indonesia held in Makassar. It was hard work but I found it fun. That hard work
brought about positive benefits too, not only for the hundreds of KGCC members
in Makassar but also for me. The ‘Clubs Get Together’ event held at
RRI gave me the opportunity then to become an RRI Radio English Announcer. So
far I have been on air since October 2002. My schedule is Mondays, Wednesdays
and Saturdays from 11.00 am until 12.00. I also do the KGRE interactive show on
Saturdays. I present many varied topics, including news about AusAID projects
and local issues as well. The KGRE interactive show plays an interactive show
plays an important role in promoting English as interesting an fun.

and met with Kevin and Ririn from the KGRE

Jojo Jumba – Palu
It was my good moment to be able doing live on air program with The Captain of
Kang GURU
Kevin Dalton last August 2005 in Palu over Pro2 FM and it’s hard to
believe that I could do that with him. At least dream comes true. Ever since I
wrote my first letter through email some five years ago and knowing Kevin
Dalton and
Kang GURU
in deep relation even more is also my other pride side story. I should thank
KGRE for its chance letting this happened.
As I now work in RRI Palu, it brings new things and more challenges especially
dealing with the Indonesian Government Radio. I start orking here in early
January 2003 and everything begins here particularly. RRI Palu has three-FM
channels — Pro1, Pro2, and Pro3. These FM channels have their own devoted
listeners and it is basically more focus on to the segment I reckon and I am
extremely happy to talk about Pro2 especially the English Chat Program that I
host for over a year.
Pro2 FM, 105 Pro2 FM is one of the RRI Palu important channels beside two other
channels as they mentioned above. Long before RRI rent out this channel to
private business outside from RRI management, Pro2 has been on air. It was then
Ari Wowor a private businessman officially started regular program for a year
on 24th September 2001, soon as he stopped the contract and afterwards RRI
management until now directly controls it. Pro2 FM is segmented for teenagers,
university students and young professional and to make people's appreciation
through the radio programs offered. The target object program covers Palu
municipality and local neighborhood regions which are able to catch the signal
clearly — Donggala, Parigi Moutong and some areas in Poso. The Vision and
Mission of Pro2 FM is to make RRI as the professional public broadcast
institution throughout its daily programs. Mrs. Hj.Netty Soriton is the in
charge person for Pro2 F, and she is very responsive and communicative manager
especially when it talks about programs in routine meeting with all crew-formal
or informal one.
English Chat The program is an English live interactive. It was actually
started last year February 2004. It's on every Sunday afternoon at 16.00 -
17.00 PM. Listeners address their opinion relating to the topic that is being
discussed between the radio announcer and the special guess speaker. If they
don't have any easy access to grab the given topic they can also tell about
something else, perhaps the announcer can ask some other things that might be
known well by them and get them talking freely and have information as many as
possible — schools, family, work placement, English studying experience,
and local issues. These are also bringing some new ideas for other listeners to
get information from the real resource. If they are already brave enough they
straight away call the radio, if they are too lazy and very shy to talk,
sending SMS to radio mobile number would be just fine and radio announcer read
out the message they have delivered.
|
The program inserts some mini info taken from English book materials, English
magazine, English tape scripts,
Kang GURU
tape script, etc. The segment is called snapshot. In the end of the program
there is a mini record playing contains of people who are being recorded by
announcer on field. It could be any one who loves English not only famous guy
but also people from different background level Delon, Ari Wibowo, Brad, Aiyep
alumnae taken from
Kang GURU
tape script. This is called English Chat Profile. The songs are English and
mostly new hits. Well I guess that's going to be brief information from me, and
I hereby affirm to join KGRE's Interactive Program Presenter's Network. And I
am very sorry for this late replying letter to your invitation, I really am! I
do always support
Kang GURU
magazine by giving brief information for listeners and people in Palu. RRI Palu
has been doing some great changes at the moment and I am self-assured this can
also give me a big support in making anything easy and possible especially for
our future cooperation.

Ririn and Ulfa — Kediri
We'll received your email and a lot of thanks for you. Of course I like to join
with Presenters Network, to share everything in English Interactive (Topics,
etc). And I really appreciate if KGRE gives that chance for me. Just for
information, I have a program, named BES (Bonansa English Show)
every Tuesday. For the first time this program start at 8 until 9 pm. 20
minutes for KGRE's Topic and 40 for interactive with the topic had related with
KGRE's. But now, we start it at 7.30 until 9 pm, because we have more callers
and messages from listeners, so we decide to gave them more time. I always
discuss with 2 permanent guess stars (Mrs. Dyani and Mark Avery) before start
the topic. An hour we had for interactive always not enough for all callers. So
that's why I realy want to join with this network, I want to make my listeners
more interesting in English. They make some English Clubs and I have Bonansa
English Forum here. All of that base on Bonansa English Show. Sometimes if Mark
can't broadcast, I try to invite one of English Teacher in Kediri (From High
School or Lectures). Sometimes we have a guest who was an English Teacher
(foreigner).
And I hope my listeners already make a contact with KGRE, for asking magazine
and information. Thank you for your email mrs. Ogy, also all merchandises from
KGRE. It makes my listeners more interested to listen KGRE in Bonansa
English Show.
Thats all my description of my English Interactive program here.

Sophie Fanumbi — Jayapura
My name is Sophie Fanumbi. I was born in Sentani, October 23 1981. I'm a
student of English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education,
Cenderawasih University at the 9th semester. That's why right now I take PPL
(Practice Teaching) at SMK N 2 Jayapura (SMEA). I'm also an English Teacher of
UPT Bahasa UNCEN. I have been a member of KGRE since I was in Malang in the
year 2000 when Mr Kevin, Project Manager of KGRE, visited RRI Malang at that
time. I registered myself to be a member of KGRE and after that I always
receive
Kang GURU
magazine regularly. In 2001, I went to Papua because I was accepted in UNCEN so
that I tried to stay tuned on KGRE program in PRO 2 FM, RRI Jayapura. On
September 2004 because I was so interested on Interactive English Program as
some of my friends did in Malang, therefore I contact Pro 2 FM and Thanks God,
a week later the Coordinator of Pro 2 FM asked me to present that program. I
called it “JEV” (Jayapura English Voice) broadsast every Sunday, at
7-9 PM on 90,1 MHz, Pro 2 FM. The Best Radio station in town because I bet that
this is the one and only attractive English Program here in Papua. Sometimes I
invite some guests to present that Program. For example English Department
Students of UNCEN, UNICEF, etc.
There are many loyal listeners who always join “JEV”. Sometimes we
have quiz also, I really love this program considering that English is very
important in Papua at the moment especially as the second language for
Education in 2010.
To let you know one of the interesting part to present my interactive English
program is by presenting a quiz. Many Listeners are eager to join the quiz
because they want to practice their English directly and automatically they
wanna get the prize. Of course so far we got all of them from KGRE. Thanks a
million for the great cooperation. Last but not least, I do appreciate for the
best work of KGRE Team. It really help me much.

Fadhli — Selayar
My name is Fadhli. I was born in Selayar Island on November 2nd 1979. I have
been istening to KGRE since August 2004. I knew KGRE from the website and I
really interested to join the program. First, I just try to subscribe the free
Kang GURU
magazine, and then try to helping
Kang GURU
to broadcast KGRE on my friends radio station in Selayar is called Contrend FM.
Its just a Radio Liar with simple broadcasting equipments, but its really
ysefull to present ny actual information and entertainment for the community in
Selayar.
We also present an english interactive program after KGRE is called Say
Something that hosted by me. I always try to prepare a topic to talk about on
the show. To make this program get good responses, I have introduced it by a
bit of presentation about KGRE and my interactive show in SMU and SMK in
Selayar. And its worked. One by one listener start to join the progam whether a
teacher, students or others. Actually is not easy for me to present the show
with my poor English for an hour. But Its a challenge, and the important thing
for me is how the listeners understood what I say. I always use bahasa campur
on the show so that all listeners feel easy to join. A regular quiz is
presented on it as well. And thats became a favourite segment coz the prize is
provided by KGRE.

Donna — Ponorogo
I have been broadcasting a weekly Interactive English program called “Sunday English Show” (SES) on Romansa 99.9 FM Ponorogo for almost
2 years. At the beginning, it was not easy to socialize an Interactive English
program in a small town like Ponorogo where not many people especially young
generation, courageous enough to speak English, but as a presenter (and also an
English lover) I insisted on having this program broadcasted in this town in
order to make the youth accustomed to, at least, listening to a
‘real’ English conversation, as English is the international
language which is very important for their future.
The duration of Sunday English show is 90 minutes since we have now KGRE's
program, we allocate 20 minutes of SES duration for KGRE program. Now the
program runs very well especially after it is supported by KGRE and I would be
very pleased if you can assist me in further developing that program.
I am really eager to join KGRE's Interactive Program Presenters' (English)
network. And I am definitely sure that there will be a lot of benefit that I,
as an English lover and English presenter, and my station can gain by joining
the network.

Inah – Bima
My name is Inah, I was born in Jakarta, on May 18th 1982. I am the chief
operational officer in Bina’ul Fikri Foundation in Bima. I have been
presenting KGRE since august 2005. English is my hobby. I have no special
background in English but in my job in Bina’ul Fikri compelled me to make
some acceleration in English. I knew KGRE from my best friend Sri Hastuti
(WSLIC Worker now) from her I got KGRE'S address then I tried to contact KGRE
immediately as by the KGRE travel plans I knew that KGRE would does some travel
to eastern Indonesia among other was in Sumbawa. Actually, to get Sumbawa
someone must transit to Bima because the airport is in Bima. So, at that time I
thought KGRE should visit Bima. Thanks God, KGRE has a good management just
about 2 days I got the answer.
Finally, I met mbak Ogi that really friendly woman. From her I got a lot of
information about KGRE. At the time I directly tried to offer myself to present
KGRE broadcasting in Bima. Although my English was poor but I thought it was a
challenging job for me, I must take it up. KGRE really contributed to the
acceleration of my English.
Something that become a big problem for me to present KGRE that is sometimes I
can't help myself to reduce my nervous. Fortunately, I have got a best partner
now who always encourage me to get better whose name's miss Feny from SMU 1.
She is an English teacher. We have a lot of things to discuss and a lot of fun
too in our broadcasting.
Every week we have some special guests, we have a chat and we talk about
everything to them. Moreover when Kevin came to Bima in early November he
brought many interesting tips that really help us to run this nice work here.

Tri Ristiana — Malang
RRI provides one hour for the English program every Sunday morning from 8.30 to
9.30 am. The first 20 minutes is for KGRE cassette package played and the rest
is for the interactive one. Lately, I use 1 hour for only interactive in the
case that the cassettes are late sent from Bali, or it can be to 10.00 am if
there's a sudden schedule change RRI makes.
I am, who's writing this profile, the only presenter of KGRE at RRI Malang.
I've been the part-timer since July 2003. It was the very first time KGRE
broadcast in RRI Malang. So, it's almost three years to now.
As a single broadcaster, I prepare all myself. From preparing the cassette
package, selecting the songs, inviting a guest and choosing a topic for the
interactive. Since I am only a part-timer, I rare go to RRI but Sundays when
it's my time to bring KGRE to the listeners. And it's only one to two hours
there.
So, what do I do with the program? The aim is of course to encourage everyone
to learn English especially in speaking. But I think it will be useless if the
callers and I only speak here and there without any conclusion or something
that I always call ‘new knowledge’. Thus I bring different topic
every Sunday. It cannot be any topic of course. You know, the listeners are
varied from different religion, race, educational background, age, and female
or male. That's the reason I am trying my best not giving topic which possibly
offends somebody, or a group of people (Indonesian are so sensitive lately).
But it cannot also be that simple. Once I gave a topic about ‘How to
Improve Our English’, nobody called. The point is I have to be creative.
I read a lot, listen a lot, browse the internet, keep up with what happens in
Indonesia and in the world lately, and of course be alert with what the
listeners want.
The Sunday before Mr. Kevin came, it was close to Valentine's Day. Did I bring
Valentine's Day as the topic? The answer is NO! There are some reasons why I
didn't pick it.
I did a small survey by myself, asked some friends how they see Val's day. I
was so surprised, that some believe that it's prohibited in Islam. Well, to be
honest I am a Moslem but I didn't know that some of us stay far away from Val's
day. Now, I know that not everyone celebrates Valentine, even only agrees to
celebrate. Then I decided that ‘Valentine Day’ should not be
on-air. It came to my mind that I had to change the topic to ‘If you are
given chance, what is the best gift for your beloved person?’ (I wished
someone would relate it to Val's day). Thank God, it worked! I was surprised
for the second time; every time before the callers ended up their calls, I
asked them if they celebrated Val's day, the answer was always the same, NO.
Some even added that it's a westerners' culture and giving best gift, it had no
relationship with the day.
|
About the best gift, the idea was also varied. Some preferred books, money,
love letters, but some preferred immaterial ones, such as love and attention.
Before completely end up my every interactive, I thank everyone who's joined
the program by mentioning their names. Reviewing what every caller has given as
their perspective about the topic is the best way to appreciate them spending
their time joining the program.
Sometimes I can have five callers in 1 hour, 4 in 30 minutes, sometimes three
or two in one hour, and once I got none. What I love from this program is that
every week I have a new caller. I ask him/her if that is his/her first time
calling KGRE and they will say YES. It seems that every week there's always
somebody interested in joining the program and of course practicing their
English.
At the very end I give a conclusion from what we've discussed during the
interactive. I resolve it from the callers' ideas about the topic given, and of
course add mine as the separator between the main two different ideas. Finally,
saying ‘Keep on Learning!’ is what I always do before leaving my
seat.
Frankly, so many things I don't yet mention here. But I think I will do it when
I have joined the Presenters' Network. So, see you around KGRE!

Alan — Persada FM Blitar
My name is Agus M. Setiawan, S.S. but my nickname on air is Mr Alan. I was
recruited to host English Interactive program after Persada FM made cooperation
with
Kang GURU
Radio English (KGRE) to broadcast KGRE program. I worked with three hosts
before i.e. Mrs Lisa Dorothy (from South Africa), Mr Huda and Ms Icha. But
since last year I became the only host for the program because Ms Lisa moved to
Surabaya, Ms Icha moved to another division of the radio organization and Mr
Huda studied overseas.
In April 2005 we offered the English teachers of junior and senior high schools
in Blitar with ‘Students In Studio’ (SIS) program. With this
program teachers were asked to send their students who have good English to be
‘guest’ or ‘co-host’ the interactive program. It got
very good response and it seems there is competition among schools to prove
that they are the best in training students in getting better English
proficiency.
Kang GURU
Radio English with its information about Australia, Aussie language and
culture, scholarship and experiences of people who join the scholarship, also
great success stories of public figures such as Indonesian artists, TV
presenters, etc. give listeners of SIS program stimulation to be the same at
least through their capabilities in speaking English.
|
The program of ‘Students In Studio’ is done aiming at not only
giving more motivation to students of senior and junior high school but also
giving support to teachers of English in Blitar by offering them a media to
actualise and improve their students’ knowledge and their English
proficiency. We hope that KGRE will give us support to run it successfully.

Wibowo and Rani - Medan
My name's Saptari Wibowo. I am the head of Medan English Speaking-Club (MES-C) KGCC #50. Our club has been linked with KGRE for more than six years, starting from 2001. I am also active as the English interactive presenter on RRI Medan (PRO 1) 94.3 FM broadcasting AFTERNOON CHAT on wednedays, at 16.20 till 17.00. Afternoon Chat broadcasts on Wednesdays after KGRE shows. I and Rani (official announcer of RRI) work hand in hand to help people in my area confident to use English, especially when I am on air with her. This interactive shows has been on air for almost nine months, starting in January. There have also lots of activities I have done with our club members, especially students. Though we sometimes encounter some technical matters, but we still run our activities in Medan. I am proud of being one of the KGRE's champions cause it's one of the most unforgettable achievements presented by KGRE. I could hardly believe how it could be. KGRE has been one of the most responsive organization helping people be confident and active with their English
Thanks KGRE, wishing this good networks continue in the future times.
My GSM no is 0813 611 99 7 22
My CDMA no is 061 77 67 6321
Hobbies are watching news on Metro TV, surfing the Net, especially KGRE, and organizing the events in Medan.

Every Wednesday I am on air together with Rani, my loyal fellow presenter on PRO I FM (RRI Medan). We often use new ideas every week, to invite more listeners through direct call or SMS . the result is that they love to respond our show through SMS rather than direct call. what's up with this idea? pls help us. It sometimes make us not really confident because we have to read all the SMS sent on air. Do you think it's effective or not? We thought that by giving two different options to our listeners, their sense of belonging to the 'Afternoon Chat' is getting increased. We also did some promotions through the banners and flyers in Medan. The result of such promotions is quite successful though they ( listeners ) are still reluctant to be involved in on air shows especially in English. Should we use both English or Indonesian language? please help us with this situation.
