Kang Guru's 10th Anniversary Aussie BBQ - Bali, October 27th, 2007

Kang Guru has been based in Bali for the past 10 years. Kang Guru was originally based at IALF Jakarta but moved to IALF Bali in 1997. The staff at Kang Guru thought it would be a great idea to celebrate the 10 years in Bali with an Aussie BBQ. So that's what happened.

Jade (left) and her freind Ayu really enjoyed the BBQ and the Aussie food too
Also read Jade Nugrahanigtyas Liswono's letter/report from her trip to Bali as winner of the 2007 Kang Guru Writing Competition. Jade really enjoyed the BBQ and the Aussie food.

The Banyuwangi Group
After months of planning the Aussie BBQ went ahead on Saturday the 27th of October. One of the invited guests was DYAH SISWINARAH NOVITA (see photograph above, Dyah is wearing the green shirt) from Banyuwangi. Here is her email to Kang Guru about her experiences leading up to the BBQ, and her visit to Kang Guru in Bali.

Dear Kang Guru,

OnThursday, 18th October, 2007 I heard my mobile phone ring. It was 0361-222080. It is Kang Guru office. It said that I was invited by KANG GURU to attend the 10th Anniversary of Kang Guru in Bali, BBQ party on 27th October 2007. I read that message again and again to convinced myself that it was an invitation to go to Bali. WOW… fantastic. Then I answered that message, and not long after that Ogi called me and explained more about that invitation and the extra persons would come to accompany me. They were members of the Fragrant Water English Club, #094. Then I made a call to Astri, the leader of Charming Learners Club, #048 and also one of my students in my course. Next day, Ogi sent an sms informing us to go together with Pak Bowo (a presenter of KANG GURU show in Radio Suara Habibulloh) who also lives in Banyuwangi. His house is about 40 km from my house.

The next afternoon. I called him and he asked me and Astri to come to his house and to discuss the trip to Bali. On Sunday morning, 21st October 2007 at 8.00 I went to Pak Bowo’s house and we discussed the journey. Then he invited us to come to his house. We met and discussed the trip, the car rental and so on. The next morning, Monday, 22nd October 2007 I asked my students (members of Fragrant Club who were mentioned by Ogi) to go to Bali with us.  I asked all my students (members of Charming Learners Club) to come to my house because I wanted to discuss the invitation. After  they got together I asked Liya Kholida to draw a picture that we would give to KANG GURU as our present. The theme was about BBQ party to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of KANG GURU in Bali.

The big day finally arrived. At 5.00am, Layin, Jarkoni, Astri, Sefy and Nur and myself were ready. Pak Bowo picked us up at 5.45. Then we traveled to Bali. At about 2.00 (WIB) or 3.00 (WITA) we arrived at the Kang Guru office. I met Sue and we chatted for a while. Then we met Kevin and Maggie and almost all the Kang Guru crew. After that Ogi took us to our hotel, the Melasti Beach Hotel. Ogi gave us an invitation letter and pocket money for each of us. I called my friend who worked in Hotel Kartika Plaza and in the evening Astri, Layin, Sefy, Febby and I went around hotel. We bought oleh-oleh for our family. I bought some T-shirts for my dad, my younger brother, my niece and my nephew. I bought a beautiful bag for my mom. And for myself I bought a necklace. Febby treated us in McDonalds. We had dinner with fried chicken, rice, soup and soft drink. At 10pm we went back to our hotel.

At 5.00 I woke up, then I prayed and then took a bath. After that I asked all my students to take a walk to the beach. I also asked Aldo, Pak Bowo’s son) to go with us, because Aldo is our friend, too. We went to the beach for two hours. We played, took pictures and practised English with tourists there. Because it was the first experience for my students practised English with tourists, they were really happy. They got tourists from  etherland, Australia and America. We took pictures together with those tourists. Then my mobile phone rang and Pak Bowo ordered us to come back to hotel to have breakfast. The  breakfast was fried rice. I and all my students ate rice because we knew that later at the BBQ party threw would only be meat and bread or maybe salad.

At 9.00 we left the hotel. We lost our way. Then after arriving there Ogi asked us to help Alwi to decorate the party. We drew pictures, cut the paper and tied with thread, etc. We loved it.

The party started and I really enjoyed every moment with new friends; Rina, Jade, Ayu, Ririn, Mila and others. We chatted together and  took pictures. After we said goodbye to you and all KANG GURU crew. It was just like a dream. When will we meet you again? Soon? We arrived home in Banyuawngi at 10.00.  Kang GURU you make my days so colorful and I hope you always guide me to improve my English.

Bali Travel Report - Jade Nugrahanigtyas Liswono

G’day Mate !!

Friday, October 26th 2007 was the beginning of my trip as the prize for the 2007 KGRE writing competition. Competition winner. It was the first time being in a plae for not only me but also Ayu, my friend. Expectedly, we were like lost people in Juanda International airport. We didn’t know the procedure of catching a plane. Fortunately, mr. Franky from IALF Surabaya came and explained to us what we had to do. Ayu and I surprised when we have had the seast and the plane began to take off. The shake of the plane was strange.

The flight took for about forty minutes. When I arrived in I Gusti Ngurah Rai International airport, Mrs. Ogi had been there to pick us up. She is very friendly. Then, we went to IALF and KGRE office. There were Mr. Kevin Dalton, Mrs. Sue, Mrs Maggie and fadli. They greeted us nicely. I was very happy to meet Mr. Kevin Dalton, the Captain of Kang Guru. His face always be published on page 1. at that time, I met him directly. Next, we were taken to Melasti Beach Bungalows where we could relax.

On Friday evening, we walked for an evening sightseeing. We passed many foreign tourists when we walked. It seemed Bali is still interesting island to visit. I think there is no worry about the safety here. Bali is safe tourist attraction. After having dinner in KFC, we went back to the hotel.

On October 27th, we had first breakfast in the hotel, then we caught the taxi to take us to KGRE office. There was BBQ partyto celebrate KGRE Bali 10th anniversary and we were invited to join it. The party was not held yet when we arrived there. We assisted Mas Alwi to make decorations from paper. Few minutes later, Mbak Dyah from banyuwangi and her English club members came helping us. Then, Mrs. Maggie asked me to have a short interview for KGRE program. I follwed her to a small room. It was the KGRE studio. Mas darmika and Mas Mahendra were working inside this room. Mas Mahendra prepared his digital camera to take my picture. Seeing that I felt as if I were a famous young artist. Before the interview, Mrs. Maggie gave me a little explanation of what were going to walk about. And, she asked me not to speak too fast. I thought iw was an “on air” program, but in contrary, it wasn’t. The topic of our interview were about culture and food. I tried to answer Mrs. Maggie’s questions as good as possible. Later, it was the time for lunch. All of us were ready to eat. The happiest moment came. I really wanted to know the taste of Aussie’s food. I liked the burger because its taste. My favorite dish was “pavlova”. It was madeby Mrs. Sue. Th ekind of dish was very sweet. It looked like an ice cream. After that, Mr. Kevin gave us some challenging games. We had to make specific shapes made from paper!!! We had to finish it as soon as we could. The fastest got the prize. But the day was getting evening and we had to say goodbye. What a sad news!!! We still wanted to be in KGRE office and we could share this happiness. Then, Ayu and I went back to the hotel.

The next day Mrs. Ogi, Mbak Ririn, from Bonansa FM Kediri, and Pak Suryadi from madura accompanied us to see the beautiful places in Bali based on Mrs. Ogi’s itinerary. Our first destination was Kuta beach/ The Kuta wind blew softly. There were few people on the beach, especially the foreign tourist. Perhaps they woke up late because it was early Sunday morning. We walked across the street to be near the Hard Rock Hotel monument and took our pictures there. Then we continued our trip to Tanah Lot which is far enough from Kuta. I got a little headache of the carsick. But I was OK if we had arrived to our destination. I like to walk seeing the panorama although I was not in good condition that day. It was very hot like the sun would burn our skin. We saw many shops selling the souvenirs along the street to Tanah Lot beach. We bought some souvenirs for our family. As usual, we saw the most common found thing in Bali, the temple. Then, we left tanah Lot and moved to the most popular shop (in my opinion) in Bali, Joger. Every domestic tourist always wants to visit this shop. We spent much time here and bought what we loved. We found a lot of lovelyT-shirts here. Later, we had lunch at “warung” right next to Joger. And I chose “Soto Ayam Suarabaya”. I liked Javanese food better than others eventhough we were in Bali. Next, we went to Nusa Dua beach. The situation was different here. It was very quiet. There were few people on the beach because the beach is not for public. It is for the hotel guests’ only. But, the sceneries is still beautiful even more exclusive because it is managed by the hotel owner. Actually, there are still so many places to visit, but we got tired so we decided to got to our hotel again because the following day Ayu and I should go to our hometown in Tulungagung, East Hava by Garuda first flight.

Finally, we had to say goodbye to all nice people of Kang Guru staffs. We wre accompanied by Mrs. Ogi to go to I gusti Ngurah rai International airport. We had to go back home. Honestly, it was really my lifetime experience.

Thank you very much Kang Guru
