Kang GURU Travels to Mendoyo - January 2009

Sue traveled to Mendoyo in the west of Bali for an AusAID sponsored KGI teacher workshop and to meet the students of several former Kang Guru Connection Clubs based there.

On Tuesday the 27th January I traveled to Mendoyo in West Bali to give a workshop to a group of SMP teachers at their MGMP meeting. The journey up there went quite quickly – about two and a half hours and on the way we picked ip Luh Nyeneng the organizer of the event who guided us to the venue. Some of the teachers were already waiting and after I unpacked my boxes we sat and chatted.

I met some teachers who had previously been at the Final Club Get Together in Mendoyo and a teacher who I had met on one of the P4TK training program in Mataram. We didn’t have to wait long before Pak Suryadi from DIKNAS came to open the event. His speech was quite short and it was great that the workshop opened on time – no jam karet in Mendoyo!

The workshop was a little different to usual as we were trying out some of the new Kang Guru SMP materials. The teachers enjoyed the activities and after each one I asked them to fill in a feedback form which I can use when I am editing the materials later. We did two of the activities before lunch and three, including a song after lunch. We of course had a Kang Guru quiz – which we played in teams. There were only about 35 participants but they were active and gave some great feedback to help us improve Kang Guru materials. We hope to try out some more new materials soon.

We finished the workshop about 3:45 and before we left to travel back to Denpasar we called in at a local teacher’s house. He had been unable to join the workshop as his daughter was getting married that day. Most of the members of the workshop arrived at his house and were warmly welcomed and fed! The decorations for the wedding were fantastic and his daughter and her new husband looked stunning in their wedding clothes. A nice end to a busy day.
