Buka Puasa with BRIDGE students in Denpasar - September 2010

This is certainly NOT the first BRIDGE exchange between Indonesian and Australian schools. It it will not be the last! Students and teachers from Southern Christian College, Tasmania visited SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Denpasar in August. There was no shyness at all and the students interacted very, very easily with each other. This is because they had actually known each other (via internet) for nearly 12 months as part of the BRIDGE program from AusAID - fantastic! What a great way to make friends and develop lasting links between people, and countries.

BRIDGE students in Dps from Tasmania - Sept 2010

In September 2010, KGI was invited by Pak Hamid from SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Denpasar to attend the Buka Puasa Bersama at their school.

What is so special about the ‘Buka Puasa’ this time? Buka puasa bersama this time was attended by a group of students from the BRIDGE partner school from Australia along with their teachers. SMA Muhammdiyah is partnered with Southern Christian College in Tasmania through BRIDGE project.

Pak Hamid and another teacher from SMA Muhamadiyah 1 visited Southern College in 2009 and 2010. The Tasmanian school is doing this reciprocal visit for the first time. Ayu was at the school and did some interviews with the students from both school and the Indonesian teacher from Tasmania.

Chris, a student from Southern Christian College - Year 10

Ayu Hi, please tell me about yourself.

Chris Hello my name is Chris. I come from Tasmania Australia, I live in a small house that has five people living in it and yeah it's good.

Ayu This is your first time to Indonesia, what do you think about it?

Chris Yes this is my first time to Indonesia. Indonesia is great, it's really beautiful and it's hot, it's awesome, it's great tourist place.

Ayu What do you think about SMA Muhammadiyah?

Chris The school is awesome, the people are really friendly - something you don't really see that much in our school or the place we come from. Just they go out of the way, look at you and smile, say hello, that kind of thing. The school itself the uniform is totally different but it's good. The things the females put something around the head that's something that we don't see that much around Tasmania but that's good!

Ayu Anything shocked you or surprised you while you are here?

Chris In Denpasar/Sumba? Probably the toilet. I'm just not used to with the squat toilet. But once again it's fun to get used to.

Ayu How long have you been learning Bahasa Indonesia?

Chris For about two years, at school.

Ayu Why are you interested in learning Bahasa Indonesia?

Chris Mainly because it's just a different language. First I was just doing it because it was a school subject. But then it grown in me and then I found out that there was gonna be a school trip to Indonesia, wow that'll be amazing so…

Ayu Can you say something in Bahasa?

Chris Saya suka melompat dari tempat tinggi.

Ayu Ha ha….Bungy Jumping ya.

Chris Ya bagus…

Pak Scott, Indonesian Teacher from Southern Christian College Tasmania

Ayu    Is this your first visit to the school after the BRIDGE project?

Scott  Yes this is our first visit after the BRIDGE, and we hope we might make it into an annual event?

Scott  There is already number of schools that have started to return to Indonesia. This is our first trip since 2002, so it’s been quiet a while. Ayu    Sudah berapa lama menjadi guru bahasa?

Scott  Saya mulai belajar bahasa Indonesia pada tahun 96 tetapi mulai mengajar bahasa Indo sejak 99.

Ayu    What do you think about the BRIDGE project?

Scott  It’s been wonderful opportunity for us to build links again with Indonesia and to start to especially for the students to make contacts with Indonesian students and opportunity to use Indonesian in real situation, communicating

Ayu    Apa harapan pak Scott setelah ini?

Scott  Kami berharap kami bisa kembali ke Indonesia sekali setahun dan mudah-mudahan makin lama makin kuat  hubungan di antara dua sekolah kita.
