Kang Guru Indonesia has had a long involvement
with BRIDGE right from the first group of teachers who
went to Australia in 2008. KGI, together with IALF, provided important
training for these teachers - cross cultural, English
language, preparation before departing indonesia and
upon returning to Indonesia. Kevin (1), Reny (2) and Ayu (2)traveled
with the various groups to Australia. Many of the teachers
involved with BRIDGE were quite nervous about those trips. For many of them it was their first trip to Jakarta let alone overseas. KGI has also provided extra
training for AIBEP school Principals. Ayu and Reny for example conducted
follow-up training days with all participants in their
provinces in collaboration with Microsoft Indonesia. Check out the links below to get an idea of the involvement of KGI in the BRIDGE project.

What is BRIDGE?
• The Australia-Indonesia BRIDGE Project increases
knowledge and understanding betweenAustralia and Indonesia
through school-to-school partnerships linking students
in bothcountries through online digital collaboration.
• The Australia Indonesia Institute (AII) has
received funds from The Myer Foundation and AusAID to
support the BRIDGE project. The Asia Education Foundation
(AEF) manages the project (with in-country support from
DEEWR and Kang Guru Indonesia).
• 46 schools across Australia partnered 47 Indonesian
schools from 7 Indonesian provinces from2008-2010.
• 9 of the Indonesian schools are Australian Government
funded Basic EducationProgram (BEP) schools.
• BRIDGE is a people to people project –
it links Australian and Indonesian communities.
• BRIDGE develops cultural understanding between
Australia and Indonesia.
• BRIDGE supports sharing of life experiences
via digital technologies and personal interaction(Indonesians
in Australia only).
• BRIDGE builds skills, knowledge and expertise
in teachers and students in both countries.
The BRIDGE project was established two years ago .Every
year, Indonesian teachers are chosen for a three-week
cultural exchange. They are partnered with an Australian
school and spend time in their classroom where they
observe teaching practices, learn about the curriculum
and teach students some cultural. The 93 schools in
Australia and Indonesia are continuously communicating.
Cooperation is taking place at various levels, and includes
teacher-to-teacher, teacher-to-student, and student-to-student
communication. BRIDGE has established a bilingual website
through wikispaces.

Day 1
The BRIDGE activity startsed on Tuesday. The activity
on that day was about Australian education presented
by Rob Skillern. The highlight of that day activity
was a school visit to Sealmore Public School where the
participants could take a close look of the classrooms
and the activities. We were welcomed by the Principal
who then delivered a presentation about the school.
Day 2
The session began ‘ A historical and Cultural
background to life in Australia’ and ‘Contemporary
Australian Society’ followed by a visit to the
Koorie Heritage Cultural Centre. The participants learned
about the indigenous and its history.
Dinner that night was very nice. We had buffet dinner
at the very famous Casino in Melbourne ‘Crown’.
The food was delicious.
Day 3
Breakfast time that day was little bit busier because
all the Australian partners had already arrived the
night before and they were all at breakfast.
The Indonesian participants met the Australian participants
and chat.
On that day the Indonesian and Australian participants
worked in two separate rooms. The Australian group did
an ICT and IT workshop with Lisa and the Indonesian
group was in the other room with Aaron.
The session finished at 4.00 pm and everyone had to
go back to the hotel and get ready for the ‘Wellcome
Dinner’ at AEF.
The dinner started at 6 pm. All the Indonesian and
Australian teachers mingled and got to know each other.
During dinner there were three performances from the
Indonesian participants; tari lilin ( Candle dance)
by Palembang group, tari Kipas ( Fan dance) by Pontianak
group and tari ‘ Kicir-kicir’ ( Kicir-kicir
dance) by Jakarta group. Everyone really enjoyed the
performances.
Day 4
The sessions on that day was focusing on Cross-Cultural
workshop and for the two partner schools to get to know
each other. Rob Skillern presented the Cross-cultural
workshop.
The final session of the cross – cultural workshop
was the ‘cross – cultural excursion’
where the participants with their partners traveled
to surrounding sites and observed culture in action.
After the two hour excursion, all the participants were
gathered in the hall and shared their cultural experience
that they observed.
Day 5
Two days in a row all the 66 participants concentrated
on ICT training. This was the highlight of the BRIDGE
project that the expected outcome is for the two schools
to be able to share information, communicate with each
other through Wikispace. They had to sit with their
partner and look at the Wikispaces they have developed
.

Day 6
On this day all the participants had their final ICT
Training with both Lisa. Some of the participants had
to leave earlier because some had to go to the airport
and some had to catch a train and some had to do long
drive with their host. Everyone was sad to see each
other’s leaving.
