After a half day in the office I flew to Lombok on the 3rd March. The flight was on time and I was soon at the hotel. The next morning I called for a taxi and loaded up the boxes. We set off for Mataram when disaster struck – the exhaust pipe fell off the car! The driver insisted he could fix it and spent about 15 minutes doing something – only for it to fall off agin 5 minutes later. So we called another taxi, unloaded the 8 noxes and set off again. Just as we were getting close to Mataram Fadhel was SMS’ing me – ‘Sue where are you – the participants are waiting?‘.I replied, ‘Don’t worry we are close.’ Then we met a road block and all the traffic had to turn left down a small crowded street where we joined a traffic jam. More SMS’s from Fadhil! Eventually we arrived at the school 10 minutes late – the journey which usually takes 20 minutes had taken 80 minutes! Phew.
Fadhil opened the boxes as the opening speech began. The workshop was attended by about 120 teachers – some of whom I recognized from past visits to Lombok. The venue was the school hall of SMK 4 Mataram. They were a lively crowd and most of them already knew a lot about KGI. They were keen to learn about the new Listen and Learn with KGI teacher packages and joined in with the activities. The workshop finished at 4 and I have to say during the afternoon it had become hotter and hotter and many of the participants seemed quite sleepy – and so did I! Just as we finished the workshop the rain began and it was a wet journey back to the hotel. It is tiring trying to learn when the weather is so hot! The room did have wall fans but they were so high up on the wall they had sort of run out of moving air before hitting the participants below.
The next morning I caught a taxi to IAIN to present the final KG/ELTIS workshop in Mataram. The ELTIS office there will close at the end of March. Most of the participants were there already and we started the workshop at 8. A couple of latecomers had to catch up when they arrived. Although there were only 20 participants it felt like more as all of them were keen and active. We worked alone, with partners and in groups. They shared problems about teaching listening and we discussed ways to overcome most of them. After lunch the students worked with some of the activities from the KGI SMP package. At the end of the day the students returned home with their own KGI SMP package bought for them by ELTIS. I flew back to Bali in the evening and spent the weekend at home!
