Kang GURU Travels to Medan - February 2010

Wibowo is one of KGI’s wonderful Champions and is based in Medan, Sumatra. To coincide with the opening of the MTTP in Medan, Wibowo asked KGI to present a teacher workshop there. Of course KGI was more than happy to do this for the teachers in Medan and for Wibowo too. Kevin flew to Medan on Friday the 25th of February via Jakarta (transit only) landing at Polonia Airport about 4pm and then heading straight to the hotel in central Medan. Actually Polonia is also in the middle of Medan. It isn’t really common these days to have airports in the middle of cites but there are some others including Sydney, New York and Halim in Jakarta.

The first evening Kevin attended a dinner for members of Wibowo’s English Language Club – the Medan English Speaking Club – at a warung close by their university. There were 23 eager members, many new ones, there to not only to eat but to meet Kevin and hear about the latest news from KGI. After dinner Kevin gave the members a fun music quiz featuring both Indonesian and Western songs AND using both English and Bahasa Indonesia. It was all a lot fun and members were especially happy when they all given a KGI Student Pack as a gift. Music Quiz winners received a KGI 20th Anniversary t-shirt.

On Saturday 70 teachers gathered at SMK 8 for the official launch of the MTTP, a newly established Medan based teacher association, and for the KGI Teacher Workshop. The School Principal from SMK 8 opened the day’s activities and before long teachers were working hard, and having fun at the same time, with the KGI workshop materials and activities. Brainstorming was a high light and as usual so were the competitions and games at the end of the workshop agenda.

Many thanks to Wibowo, his organizing committee, the host school AND all the teachers who attended. KGI Hopes to see you all again soon and good luck with your teaching ands remember – let your students feel successful and clever, make sure of this.
