KangGURU Travels to Surabaya and Gresik in 2004

Kevin travelled to East Java and in particular to the towns of Surabaya and Gresik. Teacher Workshops were the 'order of the day' in both Surabaya and Gresik.

On Presidential Election Day 2004, September 20th, I visited East Java. My first stop was Surabaya after the quick 35 minute Garuda flight from Denpasar.

The first activity was held in the Wonokromo area of Surabaya. The organizer was Pak Muchtarom from STIPI, Jl. A. Yani in Surabaya. He had certainly put a lot of work into organizing the day's activities. There were 75 teachers in attendance and the day's program ran smoothly. After the workshop I met with 35 students for a discussion and some English language games. They were quiet to begin with but it didn't take long to get the questions flowing and I think everyone enjoyed the time we had together.

The second KGRE activity was presenting a Teacher Workshop in Gresik. Before I went to the venue for the workshop I called into SMU Gresik. An interesting point came up when I was given a tour of the school by Drs. Setiyo Budi, the Principal of the school. I noticed how the school environment was so neat and clear of rubbish. It appears that the school has an environmental policy and Setiyo Budi was very proud of it. The school looked so well organized and obviously both students and staff were proud and happy with the way their school looked.

The workshop was quite a large one with 100 teachers attending in the Bangsal/Hall, SMA Semen in Gresik. There was plenty of interaction between participants and after the workshop finished there were plenty of questions about teaching and learning.

After the workshop I met with nearly 250 students from nearby schools. They were keen to ask questions and practise their English. It was a lot of fun and they enjoyed it too - especially the prizes from KGRE. The meeting actually went for a lot longer than we expected but that was due to the enthusiasm of the students.

I visited IALF Surabaya to meet with staff there before I finally returned to Bali.
