KangGURU Travels to Jakarta in January 2005

Kevin visited Jakarta twice  during January 2005. The first time was basically to deliver a Teacher Workshop at the Australian International School and the second time was to visit RRI Jakarta. I also met with Tubagus Erif Faturahman, a recent Muslim Exchange participant to Australia. He is a member of Himpunan Mahasisiwa Islam. The final event was the Australia Day celebrations at the home of the Australian Ambassador.

January 16th to 18th

Jakarta was wet and crowded and getting around town was not always easy. Nevertheless I spent time at IALF Jakarta. I visited Gene Sugandy, KGRE's website consultant.

I also interviewed Tubagus Erif Faturahman, a recent Muslim Exchange participant to Australia. He is a member of Himpunan Mahasisiwa Islam.

He spoke of his time in Australia. Listen to his interview on KGRE soon and find out why how he was so surprised that Australians were NOT against Islam or Moslems and how actually supportive and understanding they really are. This was in direct contrast to what he read in newspapers and what many of his Moslem friends here in Indonesia think. He found Aussies to be friendly and really interested and concerned about Indonesia. The Muslim Exchange Program, supported by the Australia Indonesia Institute (AII), runs the exchange program every year.

Teacher Assistants at AIS, Jakarta.

On Tuesday I presented a workshop at the Australian International School. The majority of participants were not English language teachers however. They were Teacher Assistants. I found them all to be keen and very interested in English and they all were highly skilled especially in speaking.  We had a lot of fun and they told me afterwards that they really learnt quite a lot from the activities. Thanks to Riddhi Bargon, an old friend from KGRE's 2001 visit to Riau, for her initial idea of having the workshop and her early involvement in the organizing of the workshop. Without her assistance and initiative the workshop would not have happened.

Jan. 23rd to 26th

Sunday was RRI JKT and interactive radio at 3.00pm although the show went to air 15 minutes late. The 'Fun With English' program attracted many callers and it was great to speak with so many (about 10) callers from Jakarta. All 10 callers will receive a special package from KGRE as long as they contact KGRE next week by email. Congratulations to all callers/winners. On Monday and Tuesday I spent time at IALF Jakarta and conducted a 15 minute interview with Mr. David Ritchie, Australia's Ambassador to Indonesia. I also paid a second visit to Gene Sugandy at her office in West Jakarta to discuss changes tot he KGRE website for 2005. On Tuesday evening I went to the Australian Ambassador's house for the annual Australia Day Celebration. That was great fun and provided a good chance to catch up with other Aussie working here in Indonesia.

Busy, busy Jakarta
