KangGURU Travels to Jakarta in May 2005

Kevin, with support from AusAID, traveled to Jakarta to give a presentation on Aussie slang and idioms to English language students at STBA LIA in Jakarta as a part of their Aussie Japan celebrations. Kevin also interviewed Wawan, Manager for Indonesian Idol. On the following day Kevin met with popular Indonesian singer, Shanty for an interview.

May 27 - 28, 2005

First stop was STBA LIA where organizers there were holding their annual language spectacular. This year was their Aussie Japan Festival. It was held over three days and involved all sorts of activities including music, drama and exhibitions. When Kevin arrived at just before 2pm on the 27th there was a very entertaining drama taking place. It involved about 15 people. They were all busily rushing around keeping the several hundred spectators thoroughly involved and entertained.

KGRE's presentation attracted 60 people and we basically talked about Aussie idioms and slang. Several lecturers also attended and the questions from all participants flowed freely. Kevin gave out photocopies from the KGRE website Idioms Inggris page to show the participants what could be seen on the KGRE website. Kevin also gave away Idioms Inggris cassettes from KGRE along with magazines and other KGRE merchandise.

Suryanti is Deputy Director for Students and Cooperation Affairs and was primarily responsible for the organization of the events. Kevin interviewed Suryanti about her job and her career in education. You can read more about her in the August 2005 magazine plus hear her on radio during July and August 2005.

Kevin's next appointment was with Wawanfrom PT Indomugi Pratama, the managing agents for Indonesian Idol contestants. Wawan look safter Delon. Kevin met with Wawan at Starbucks in Jl Thamrin Jakarta. Wawan talked about his career, his English language skills and how they are so important for his career plus gave KGRE up to date information on Delon's career and the next series of Indonesia Idol. The new series began on Indonesian television on the same day Kevin interviewed Wawan, May 27th. You can her Wawan's interesting interview on KGRE in August and read about him in the August 2005 magazine. If you are thinking of a career in artist management and entertainment then Wawan has some good advice for you.

On May 28th Kevin went to a music studio in South Jakarta to meet with Indonesian singer, Shanty. Shanty was rehearsing for a show the following day. After her practice she spoke with Kevin. The interview was terrific fun and Shanty sure had a lot to say. You can hear her on KGRE in August and read about her and her career in the August 2005 magazine. You may be quite surprised just how important English is in Shanty's career and in her future career plans.

One of the things we did talk about was her great song from her last CD called ''Di Belahan Langit Hati' written by Dewi Lestari. Shanty is very proud of that song and we will feature it on KGRE soon. The song is  half in Indonesian and half in English.

One of the interesting things Shanty said was that she loves to talk and that is one of the main reasons she got the job on MTV as a VJ. Do you love to talk? In English that is? Are you brave to use English?
