KGRE has made many visits to Madura in East Java. This time KGRE presented a Teacher Workshop at Pondok Pesantren An-Nuqayah in Guluk Guluk, joined in with activities at their English Camp and supported ISELP teacher Margaret Rollings and her husband, John, teacher trainers at the pondok pesanten. Sapi Sonok was a highlight of the Madura trip too.

KGRE Travel Madura
Sept. 28 - Oct 2, 2005

KGRE has visited Madura several times before. Earlier in 2005, for example, Kevin visited Madura in March for a KGCC Get Together organized by the Pioneer English Club in Prenduan. This time the main purpose of the visit was to present a KGRE Teacher Workshop at Pondok Pesantren An-Nuqayah in Guluk Guluk. John and Margaret Rollings from Australia are located in Guluk Guluk with the AusAID supported ISELP project in conjunction with Australian Volunteers International. They have been in Guluk Guluk for the past year working as teacher trainers at the pesantren. They are well known in the area, almost famous in fact, and certainly have become important people in the lives of the teachers and students of the Ganding district.

Back in March 2005 KGRE was asked to participate in an ‘English Camp’ activity being organized by Ibu Efa, a wonderfully dedicated teacher at the pondok pesantren. With support from Margaret and John and the other dedicated teachers at the pondok pesantren, Efa went ahead and put together a 4 day program of activities. It is always terrific to see young teachers with so much enthusiasm and interest in their students.

The program, which was held between September 26th and September 30th, promoted the use and enjoyment of English. The program also gave students a wide variety of English language activities including role plays, chanting, vocabulary activities and speech making.

KGRE presented a half day KGRE Teacher Workshop of teachers from the Sumenup area. Kevin had a lot of fun with several groups of boys and girls from the pondok pesantren by giving them quiz activities about Australia, Indonesia and music. Two other ISELP teacher trainers based in East Java also participated in the activities. Cheryl Reid from Pondok Pesantren Suman Drajat in Paciran and Prue Price from Pondok Pesantren Qomaruddin in Bunga – Gresik joined in the fun with activities ranging from Aussie slang and idioms to the old fashioned ‘Pin the Tail on the Bull’. Students and teachers alike loved the activities presented by all the local teachers too – it really was a joint effort by all teachers and students. Well Done!

The boys performed short role plays which illustrated the meaning of English Idioms. They were lively and full of fun as well. Some of those boys will be actors one day. Their skits were innovative, clever and so easy to understand. The amazing thing was that they created their role plays in just a few minutes. Very clever!
Students presented a wide range of activities too. Young students from the nearby SD school Madrasah Ibtidayah gave a performance in Line Dancing which was absolutely wonderful. Congratulations to the students and to their teachers, especially Pak Lukman Al Hakim and Pak Nasimi. Kevin visited their school on Friday the 30th to meet with several of the dancers and to see just how wonderful their school really is. Both of these teachers are very dedicated to their students and the school. The school is very clean and attractive and with plants and flowers dotted all over the place. It is obvious that the school is a place of enjoyment and learning.

The girls at the Pondok Pesantren An-Nuqayah presented a morning of English Chants that were so good. In small groups of 10 – 12 students they sang and performed their own English language musical chants. These were truly marvellous and such a good way to study and have fun with English. Congratulations to every one of those talented and enthusiastic girls. And the teachers who encourage and support such activities.

Pak Suriyadi (in KGRE t-shirt) brought 10 of his friends from Prenduan to Pondok Pesantren An-Nuqayah on Friday. Suryiadi spoke to teachers at the workshop about the KGRE Connection Club network. His Pioneer Club Club, based at Pondok Pesantren Al Amien, is very active and has been a keen member of the KGCC network for quite a few years now. Earlier this year KGRE joined together with the Pioneer Club to hold a KGCC Get Together for all clubs linked with KGRE in the area. There were over 150 members at the meeting. The Pioneer Club also organized a Teacher Workshop at the Prenduan.

On Saturday Kevin, Margaret and John, Prue and Cheryl went to Pemakasan to see Sapi Sonok. This annual festival is quite amazing really and is apparently less well known than kerapan sapi. The festival involves cows performing a series of co-ordinated steps as they walk side by side down a measured walk way towards the judges. They walk in perfect harmony with each other as their master signals them from behind by using ropes. When the cows reach the judges they must place both from hoofs on a raised piece of wood. Then they stand there and wait.

Kevin returned to Surabaya later that day and went onto Bali on Sunday morning.
