KangGURU Travels to Bima in Sumbawa

KGRE Activities Day, Bima Simbawa - 7th May 2006

On the 7th of May, 2006, Ogi and I, Krista Gerschwitz, flew to Bima in Simbawa for an Activities Day. It was the first time I had visited this town. What I will remember most about this particular place were the goats roaming the main streets and the ride in the 'Ben Hur' - the pony drawn transport car.
I also met a student whom I had taught in Bali in 2000, which was a pleasant surprise.

The activities day was thankfully cloudy, although still hot and steamy. Students from English clubs in the surrounding towns arrived for the 8am start in the museum grounds in Bima. Over two hundred students attended. They enjoyed a variety of activities, including giving performances of singing and dancing, reciting poems in English, quizzes, puzzles, guessing games and learning 'The Kookaburra' song in English. the favourite activity was the music quiz, identifying the title of songs, the band’s name and number of members in the band.

Some of the students were very outgoing and took the opportunity to ask me many questions. Others were a little shyer, but were keen to take photos. The day ended after 4pm. The students took home prizes and ”goodies” from Kangguru. It was a very successful day overall and congratulations should be given to the organizers.

K. Gerschwitz.
