Kevin used to live in Lombok. He worked there as an Australian Volunteer International (AVI) from March 1990 until July 1992. Kevin taught English in a large Muslim University in Pancor as well as working in an NGO in Mataram. That was Kevin’s introduction to Indonesia. He really enjoyed it. As Kevin drove through the Ampenan market area he was reminded of how amazing Lombok was, and still is!
During his trip back to Lombok in mid-November, 2006, he met an Aussie volunteer, Andrea Lindsay. Andrea is an AVI now in Lombok living and working in Narmada. Andrea’s work is to do with agriculture and with all of her experience with agriculture and the land in Australia, she is proving to be a valued member of the team at Balai Pengkajian Teknologi Pertanian (BPTP). Kevin interviewed Andrea about hr work and you can hear Andrea early in 2006 on KGRE. She has very positive things to say about the ingenuity and skill and capabilities of Lombok cattle farmers. Check the KGRE AusAID Page for December 2006 to read more about AVIs in Indonesia – http://www.kangguru.org/ausaidprojects.htm |

After the interview, conducted at the beautiful Qunci Villas in Manggsit, Andrea went to RRI with Kevin for a Listener’s Meeting. Jack and Nada, English language interactive presenters at RRI, organized the meeting at which around 250 English language students attended. Most were SMP and SMA level but SD aged students were well represented along with university aged students. Jack opened the meeting and Andrea soon took control of the microphone and spoke to the students about her job in Narmada. They asked her quite few questions about it. Thanks Andrea. For the following 2 hours, Jack, Nada and Kevin presented activities to the audience and we all had lots of fun. Kevin taught them ‘G’day G’day’, an Aussie classic song and they were alls o good at learning the words. Well Done! Thanks to RRI for their support and good luck to all three interactive presenters and their programs on RRI Mataram.

After the Listener’s Meeting Kevin took 18 members of Lombok KGCCs to a meal at a local restaurant nearby to RRI. Members of the Alfa Club, the Sasak Club and the English Speaking Club gathered together for nasi goring and es cendol. The members from Selong and Praya all came by motorbikes so that was a long trip for them Thanks guys. Kedvin chatted to the club representatives about club activities, CARs and future plans. Kevin also committed Cheryl to visit the clubs in February or March 2007. Cheryl is looking after clubs for 2007 and has already started working on plans to help clubs become stronger and more interactive with KGRE.
On Sunday, Kevin went to central Lombok to the city of Praya for a Teacher Workshop organized by Pak Muhsan
and the MGMP Bahasa Inggris, Praya.
Around 70 teachers attended the workshop which began just after 9am and finished at 2.30pm. It was quite busy but it was probably the hottest workshop Kevin has ever done. Praya is a hot, hot town! Congratulations to the Organizing Committee and to the Sasak English Club which assisted. After the workshop it was students time. Probably 100 students arrived and they certainly had lots of questions to ask – well done! They were surprisingly keen and Kevin was kept very busy with over 20 questions. He taught them ‘G’day G’day’ and that was a big hit.
Kevin left Praya at 5.30pm. The drive back to Senggigi was a slow one. It must have been Sasak Wedding Season as there were at least 5 weddings on the way through Praya, Kediri, Gunung Sari and Batulayar. Traffic was slow as people celebrated thee village weddings. Then the rain started and traffic slowed down even more. A long day BUT a good day.
Kevin flew back to Bali on Monday morning.
