Travels to Madura Aug 4 - 7th, 2006
This trip to Madura was the first official KGRE trip for Cheryl Reid, KGRE’s newest staff member. Kevin tagged along too as there were two KGRE Teacher Workshops - one in Pamekasan and one in Bangkalan plus there was also a KGRE Get Together activity in Pemakasan. To get to Madura meant flying from Denpasar to Surabaya first and KGRE used g
Garuda, as usual. Then by car to the port of Surabaya where they caught a ferry to Madura. To get to Pamekasan took another 3 hours by car but they finally arrived in the late afternoon at the Hotel Putri.
Both Cheryl and Kevin were in Madura to work together with Suriyadi, a very keen and enthusiastic young teacher from El-Amien, a large Islamic school in Prenduan. KGRE has been to El-Amein several times before to work with students and teachers. However this time the activities were not to be held at Al-Amein but at
SMAN K 3 in Pamekasan. |

Suriyadi and his team of helpers had everything wonderfully organized. We knew they would. There were approximately 65 teachers at the workshop. They were basically introduced to KGRE radio, magazine and website. Cheryl told them all about those services and then went on to tell them about the KGRE teacher materials including the SMP Teacher Packages and the Listening and Reading Class Sets. |
Under Cheryl’s guidance the participants were taken through a series of classroom activities including pre-listening activities and actual classroom situations. It was great fun and the participants enjoyed the sessions a lot. KGRE hopes that they at least picked up a few basic classroom ‘tricks’ and ideas. The workshop finished at 3.00pm with some pretty wild quizzes and games. Prizes are always a big hit at any KGRE activity. That’s understandable, isn’t it? |

Kevin and Cheryl took the Workshop Committee out for a meal at a great little warung in Jl. Kambodja in Pamekasan that evening. The satay was great and so was the soto ayam. Ibu Stania, deputy editor from Asia Calling in Jakarta, went to the warung too. 'Asia Calling' has been promoted on KGRE radio recently. Stania joined in the workshop earlier in the day to promote Asia Calling with the teachers in Madura.

On Friday the 4 th of August, the second Madura based KGRE Connection Club Get Together got underway at SMAN K 3 in Pamekasan.
Five KGCCs were involved – KGCC #005 EDELWEISS STUDENT ENGLISH CLUB from Guluk Guluk
KGCC # 046 Nasyrul Ulum English Club (NEC) from Pamekasan

Not all of their members could attend but nevertheless around 200 keen young, English language club members were there to join in with the fun. Activities began at 8.00 am with Suriyadi welcoming everyone to the event. Then Kevin from KGRE welcomed everyone for a second time. It is always great to see so many bright and smiling young faces eager to use their English together. He introduced Cheryl Reid, KGRE’s newest staff member to the members. Cheryl will be the person at KGRE from now on who is responsible for looking after the Connection Clubs and their members.
The members of the KGCCs all presented short dramas or presentations for other clubs to watch and enjoy. Presentations varied from songs to short plays to short speeches. Excellent work!
This part of the day's activities was done in two groups - boys and girls. The boy's group sang songs and performed dramas about teenage life in
Madura - very interesting! |

After separate activities for boys and girls, the group were brought back together for a final song. Cheryl taught them ' G'day G'day', a very well known Aussie song. It was a lot of fun with some wonderful singing voices being heard. The day finished with the usual quizzes and prizes before
Cheryl and Kevin headed west to Bangkalan where Cheryl stayed overnight for her KGRE Teacher Workshop on Saturday. Special thanks to Margaret and John Rollings for their assistance and a VERY special thank you to Suriyadi - Head of the the very enthusiastic Organizing Committee.
