KangGURU Travels to
Paiton, Pasuruan, Probolinggo and Surabaya

written by Kevin

I left Bali on Sunday just after quietly celebrating Hari Nyepi. Denpasar airport was busy with many people heading off from Bali to all parts of Indonesia. There were flights to Lombok, Jakarta and Makassar all leaving around the same time that I flew to Surabaya. The weather was pretty stormy with gusty winds and occasional rain squalls. In fact, the weather had been like that for the whole Nyepi period as well. In spite of this, the take-off was smooth as was the flight across East Java to Surabaya.

Pak Haris picked me up at Juanda, Surabaya’s international airport, and within an hour we were parked outside Radio ‘Suara Pasururuan’ in the city of Pasuruan. I met Louise and Dean there. They are members of AusAID’s ISELP and AVI programs respectively and are based in that bustling East Java city working at pondok pesantren PP Al-Yasini. They have also been speaking with the people at Radio ‘Suara Pasururuan’ and especially with the stations’ six interactive radio program presenters. Radio ‘Suara Pasururuan’ will start playing KGRE in the next few weeks so a big welcome to them and thanks to Pak Subario for allowing KGRE to be heard in Pasuruan. Mbak Astri is the co-ordinator of the presenters and along with her fellow presenters/teachers is very keen to link with KGRE and very keen to become a member of the KGRE English Language Interactive Presenters’ Network. Their talkback, or in other words interactive program has been ‘on air’ for over two years and is already well-known in the area. KGRE hopes to be able to help the program to become even more popular.

My hotel for the night was very close to the gigantic electricity power stations at Paiton, East Java. No worries about mati listrik there. Enough electricity for everyone.

I worked solidly in Room #20 at my hotel all morning on Monday writing radio programs numbered 5107 – 12. It is always fun making up radio programs and these six programs include Fiona and Caroline and the return of an old friend, Dr Pintar. We even have a new series of radio station promos in every second program AND information about a new Special SMS Competition just for radio program listeners.

In the afternoon I met with AVI Alistair and new ISELP teacher trainer, Paul for lunch. Both are based at PP Nurul Jadid. Alistair has been there for over an year but Paul just a few weeks. Then off too PP Nurul Jadid for a meeting with the planning committee for the workshop and a special meeting with members of KGRE Connection Club # 22, the Galilei Club from Paiton and PP Nurul Jadid. There were probably 100 girls at the meeting and they were fantastic. They were keen, vibrant and their English was so good. There were lots of questions and lots of excitement too.
Novi, Elvin and Mahrus - leaders at work!

We had games and quizzes and even teachers joined in. Club Leader, a class three student named Elvin Arinal, was a bright and enthusiastic leader. She finishes school in May/June but her deputy leader, Novi Merianita is ready to take over the club. The club had already made plans for the hand-over of positions. This is a great idea. Many clubs have this problem each year. Older members leave and nobody is ready to take their place as leaders or organizers.

Mahrus Ali is the teacher who supports the club and he seems very keen indeed. He is also involved in the radio station at the pondok pesantren and the helped with the teacher workshop too. A chap named Sugiono was instrumental in the development of the club and they told me that he is now in IALF Bali doing his ADS pre-departure training.

Tuesday was workshop day at Nurul Jadid. Spanduks were up and members of the committee were ready to start work. Teachers began arriving at the venue at 7.30. By the beginning of the workshop there were 160 eager teachers waiting for the ‘show to go on’. Aussies, Alistair and Paul, ISELP teacher trainers based at PP Nurul Jadid, were there to lend support and to encourage ‘their’ teachers throughout the 6 hour workshop. The committee had worked very hard for many months to make this workshop possible and participants really worked hard to make it a success too. There was a lot of chatter and working together throughout the day and according to Workshop Feedback Forms, the workshop was a great success.

Alisair is an ISELP teacher Trainer at PP Nurul Jadid - he is from Geelong in Victoria
Once the workshop finished we all headed over to Radio Smanji FM. There we were joined by Caroline Bentley from IALF Bali and Jo Dowing from AVI/ISELP for a radio show. Alistair is the DJ each Tuesday and he runs a program called ‘The Real Thing’. It is all in English and is primarily for the students in the nearby pesantren. They love to listen every Tuesday and Friday to this English language program which is supported by students from the Galilei English Club and by a technical chap called Ali. Thanks to all of them for helping Alistair and thanks to PP Nurul Jadid for allowing this type of radio broadcast to happen in their school and for their students. I am sure the students really appreciate it.
Wednesday morning soon arrived and after a brief stop to take photographs of the giant power station in Paiton, I headed for Probolinggo and Radio Bromo FM.

At the small radio station I was greeted by about 50 students who had been invited to join with the interactive meeting. Pak Mujib Hamzah welcomed me to the station and was very well-prepared with his opening remarks. Questions were wide-ranging and in fact the very first question was about the current situation between Australia and Indonesia – the visas for Papuan asylum seekers. Other questions were about KGRE, Australian students and language clubs. A few calls came in from listeners too so that was good. KGRE hopes that the KGRE presenter at Bromo FM, Imam Syafiri, that an English language interactive program can be set up soon.

Bromo FM was also very keen to assist local students create a language club in the town – they are discussing it now. Maybe it will be based at Bromo FM. That would be great!
Late in the afternoon I called into the offices of Tunas Hijau to meet with Andi. He is designing the cover for our June 2006 KGRE magazine. Together we looked at his initial designs and discussed some changes and ideas. The proposed overlooks good and I am sure it will be a surprise for all of our regular readers.

I flew back to Denpasar early on Thursday morning.
